Bottle. Pours a deep clear bronze-hued reddish body with a medium creamy off-white head, looking kinda gorgeous. Aroma is raisins, brown sugar, rum, leather, vanilla and hints of wood, soy sauce, tobacco and caramel. Taste is caramel, leather, burnt sugar, soy sauce, brown sugar and hints of rum, wood and salty minerals. Full body, medium carbonation. Very nice actually, good to see that not all the dark beers from Nøgne Ø come out as lackluster-feeling - as I think they have - these days. Complex, great looks and mouthfeel with interesting flavor components, just as such a beer should have. Nice one.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours a murky purple brown with a medium but fading off-white head and an aroma of hops, toffee, liquor, roasty malts, grapefruit, citrus, flowers and honey. The taste is medium sweet with a full body, a really good balance and a nice long lasting hoppy bitterness.

Aroma’s: sweet, black strap molasses, red fruit, alcohol. Retronasal it’s sweet, drop/licorice, some soy sauce, red fruit, chocolate. Flavor is moderate to full sweet, dark malts, light roasty, molasses. Pretty strong alcohol feel. Medium to full bodied. Finishes sweet, ryebread, roasty. Nøgne Ø # 500 Imperial India Pale Ale (Batch 500)
An otherwise clear beer but it has a large amount of hop trub that floats around, no head. Nose is sweet with caramel and mild hop notes. This bottle has some age to it so the hop aromas have mellowed out. Thick, syrupy sweetness that gets balanced by a hefty hop bitterness. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Very full mouthefeel with good drinkability and low alcohol presense. Minimal carbonation. Well made and drinkable for such a heavy beer.

Taste is licorice, caramel, brown sugar, nuts, chocolate and hints of leather, vanilla and mild coffee. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. A good beer for sure, but there is something about the balance here I can’t wrap my head around - the body seems to not be able to keep up with the complexity, and there are some strange sweet tones which makes the complexity itself a bit muddled. Hard to put my finger on it, but I’d expected more from this.

(BKL2017 - SO, backlog) So much class, classically on point mid-Atlantic norway between UK and US that it nearly evaporates behind its held expectations: rich milk chocolate praline, Scandinavian liquorice spread thick then overpowered by exotic/"tropical" liqueur fumes, candied mango. Almost too classical for its own good given the provenance and competition...
