3.6 White Star Dark Destroyer Had this interesting "old ale" style beer at the Paisley Beer Festival on April 2007. Cask, gravity dispense. Black ruby in colour with a creamy buff head. Roasted malt in the aroma with a good silky smooth mouthfeel. Tastes like a cross between a strong mild and a malty porter. Dark malt complexes evident with unusual flavour combinations. Reminded me slightly of Whim’s Old Izzak, but this was much better in mouth feel and taste. Slight caramel flavour with burnt toast giving way to overipe victoria plums and cherries. Vinous aftertaste with slight acetic port finish. A fantastic Old Ale and highly recommended. Monday, March 12, 2012

1.9 White Star Afro-dizzy-sack Bottle (BBF20-06-06) @ Chris_o shindig 2007. Unclear light amber color with a virtually none off-white head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, fruit, medicine, sour. Flavor is moderate sweet, medicine, stable, and with a average duration. Body is light to medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is moderate astringent. 2.8 White Star Starlight 3 Judges. Aroma is pale biscuit malt hints of spice and orange peel, citrus hops coming through at times. Taste is balanced however once swallowed i got a horrible cheesy lambic hop flavour that put me off, like a very mature chedder. A weird one that id like to try again. Wednesday, June 27, 2007

1.9 White Star Majestic Bottle Conditioned. Dark amber body, with a small white head. No real aroma. The taste to me was a bit on the sour side with some citrusy hops . There was to much sediment for me when poured. A very disappointing beer. Friday, June 15, 2007

3.1 White Star Crafty Shag Bottled. Clear golden. Orangey nose. Sweet and fruity with notes of peach, minerals and vanilla. Kedmium bodied with fairly low bitterness. A nice golden ale, but no closer to a pilsener than it is to sahti or gin... Tuesday, March 27, 2007

3.4 White Star Crafty Shag One of their better bottled beers. Didn’t have the acidity of some I have tried from this brwery.Slightly fruity with some bitterness.A definite improvement in the bottling arena. Thursday, February 8, 2007

1.5 White Star Royal Standard Golden with some sediment. Curious aroma of medium density fibreboard soaked in something sweet and alcoholic. Slight citrus taste is overwhelmed by the woody tang of sawdust, paint and plaster. Not very nice. Wednesday, January 3, 2007

1.9 White Star Steamer BCA (from Bitter Virtue, BB May 07). Rough yeasty aromas The malt and fruity hop flavours are over ridden by the yeast and rough bitterness. Friday, November 24, 2006

2.2 White Star Dark Destroyer Bottle picked up at the Grog shop, Oxford, 29-07-06. Mmmmhhh... another beer from White Star that doesn’t seem to be having a great time in the bottle. This wasn’t quite the disaster that the Crafty Shag was but yet again a beer with a considerable amount of yeasty floaters, though it did pour a little better than that beer. Poured a very dark brown with a definate smokiness in the aroma, had a slightly sour taste some roasted and chocolate notes detected but again they were a little outweighed by the slightly bitter sour edge. Like the bottled Leek beers I will be buying White Star beers in a bottle with some caution in the future. Tuesday, August 1, 2006

2.6 White Star Dark Destroyer Cask gravity at The George, Bethersden, Summer BF 2006. Deep ruby colour, no head. I’ve not had good experiences with White Star beers, so I approached this with some trepidation. This one is sour, with dark malt aroma. Liquorice/choc/coffee in mouth. Not a great deal of depth. Sour liquorice finish. Again, I am afraid, not my favourite. Monday, July 31, 2006

1.9 White Star Crafty Shag 500ml Bottle picked up at the Grog shop, Jericho, Oxford 29-07-06. This poured a hazy golden colour with a large amount of yeasty floaters kicking around in it, had a yeasty aroma as well and tasted better than it looked with a slight sourness in the bite which wasn’t too bad but yeastyness always present. Had to throw away much of it and like the Leek beers I’ve had recently this really didn’t cut it in the bottled conditoned stakes. Monday, July 31, 2006

3.3 White Star Starlight Cask@The Kings Head Inn, Salisbury. Amber color, small off-white head. Good flowery hoppy nose. Nice flowery bitterness with hints of licorice in it. Bitterness continues also in the aftertaste. Well done bitter. Saturday, July 29, 2006

3 White Star Crafty Shag Cask@Beer House, Manchester. A bit hazy nutty brown color(!), small off-white head. Toffeish, spicey nose. Malty, nutty, bitter-spicey -like aftertaste. Maybe ginger? Interesting, a bit different cask brew, but I wonder if this one really was Crafty Shag as cask label indicated. Saturday, July 29, 2006

3.2 White Star Dark Destroyer Cask, handpump @ the Gardener’s Arms, Lewes. Deep brown, almost black but quite clear in the lights. Thin, soapy beige head lasted the length and left some legs. Burnt stick and coffee bean nose. In the mouth it has rich butterscotch, Worcestershire sauce and marmite flavours with some dark fruit shining through on the side of the tongue. End has some smoke and more yeasty flavours with just a touch of roasted grain, but very little bitterness. Tasted this with the local delicacy of cold pastie and pork pie, so the beer was definitely the winner (the other two I hope never to meet again!). Sweetish, but easily quaffable with fair balance. Quite a nice beer. Thursday, July 27, 2006

0.9 White Star Crafty Shag Cask gravity at Kent BF 2006. Gold colour with disappearing white head. Nasty burnt toffee aroma, bit of pukey lager in mouth. This is awful. I had to pour it away it was that bad. Tuesday, July 25, 2006

2.3 White Star Battleaxe BCA (from Bottles of Botley). Certainly not the worst white star beer I’ve had but not great. Smoky caramelised malt flavours with slight sourness. Just about drinkable in a masochistic kind of way. Thursday, July 6, 2006

2.6 White Star Capstan Full Strength Cask conditioned at Catford beer festival. Overpowering roast malt aroma. To taste, some fruit, roast, strong malt character, some sourness. It’s interesting, but not hugely drinkable. Tuesday, June 13, 2006

2.9 White Star U.X.B Cask gravity at Catford BF 06. Gold with no head. Nice floral hop. Bit wet in mouth. Session bitter with good strong hop on finish. Nice enough golden beer, hops have a sherbert quality. Saturday, June 10, 2006
