St. Bernardus Abt 12
We were so excited to try this Belgian quadrupel, having seen it around for $7/bottle or $24/4-pack and miraculously catching a single bottle for $4.50. It is darker than many Belgians-- a red-brown color-- with a caramel, molasses aroma, some bitterness and light sweetness, and a long finish. You can’t smell the 10% alcohol but you can definitely taste it- it contributes to the overall taste and length of the finish. Very yummy and deserves the great reputation!

Btl pours a hazy golden color with an orange hue. Big fluffy white head lingers, leaving strands of lace on glass with each sip. Aromas of ripe fruit, flowers, spice and cookie dough. Tastes of banana, tangerine, pepper, wheat grains, yeast and a hint of alcohol. Medium body, slightly above average carbonation, soft smooth mouthfeel and a spicy, effervescent finish. This is a really nice abbey ale. I like that it does not feel heavy even though it’s a big beer. The flavors and aromas meld perfectly to create a smooth delicate easy to drink brew. Very refreshing!

Bottle. Color: Dark ruby, frothy beige head. Taste: Dark roasted malts, very ripe red fruit, plum, raisins and caramel. Earthy and fruity, lightly bitter finish. Medium body. Pretty much carbonation. A little bit too harsh in my opinion. Overall a nice beer, but not one of the best for me...

On tap at quick. Dark brown color hazes thick off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, Belgian yeast, some spices, caramel, wood, earth, spices. Some vague fruity notes. Taste is light sour, a bit sticky, mild bitter. medium yo full body soft carbonation. Earthy finish. Strong but alcohol is well hidden. Solid Belgian ale.

St. Bernardus Christmas Ale
Ar: Pungent ripe banana; peach, black pepper and clove; some hints of dark caramel. Ap: Deep brown with amber highlights; medium dark tan head with moderate-good retention, settles to a ring of fine bubbles and a thin cap of haze with a few suds. T: Sweet banana up front, mingled with notes of clove and alcohol; moderately sweet with peach, plum, and more banana mid-palate; finish is banana, peach, and fruit leathers, with a low bitterness, slight black pepper, and toasty, rich caramel. P: Medium-full body with high carbonation; finish is medium-dry. O: Solid Belgian Christmas ale; there is a robust fruit and spice character, though banana is without a doubt the most prominent; good sweetness and carbonation, and the dry finish keeps it drinkable; alcohol warmth is a bit noticeable, but not terribly of style for a big, winter beer.

"A 16 04 16" a best by date...maybe? First of two 11.2floz bottles bought discounted for $1/each in the St. Louis area. Consumed 01.20.2016. Appearance is of a golden haze and a soft bubbly head in a tulip glass. Cantaloupe and unwashed hair fills the nose in a good way. If this beer is old, then I wouldn’t know it from how it tastes and goes down. Possesses a nice light body and mouth filling of cereal grain and floral flavors.I likey.

Legendary beer but I wouldn’t say it’s best in its class. Maybe in TOP3. Nice aroma, nothing special in it though, pretty modest aroma. Taste is medium sweet. Honey and candy sugar. Lacks a bit of bitterness at the end, aftertaste is too sweet for my taste. Didn’t find that hoppy bite. Certainly a very good beer and alcohol well hidden.

Light aroma, fruity, malty. Beige head. Light sweet, light bitter, wonderfully balanced taste. Bitterness wins at the end. More than enough taste for a dubbel. Very drinkable.

St. Bernardus Abt 12 Oak Aged
750 ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with moderate head. Aromas of rich sweet malts, candi sugar, raisins, tobacco, and light spice. Flavors of dry sugary raisins, licorice, tobacco, calvados (ie alcohol), orange peel, biscuity malts and spice (ginger). Complex but thinner than original - which is much better IMHO.

Probably had this one 20-30 times during the years, also had the occasion to try it on tap. Wanted to review this so many times, and finally writing some notes at home from the PC, with a 33 cl in St. Bernardus glass. ------ Pours a medium to abundant, off-white-gray to light beige, creamy head, which keeps an extremely long lasting layer; typical deep and dark mahogany brown appearance. Smells straight off raisins and ripe fruit, sweet spiced, leathery, huge and top quality belgian yeast background. Tastes all sorts of dried fruits and nuts, brown sugar, figs, creme caramel, blended all together by that yeast character; medium plus , very nice and smooth sweetness, almost medium bitterness; very complex and balanced. Medium carbonation, full bodied and quite creamy. Rich and refined. With the Rochefort 8/10 (Westvleteren...) this is the belgian dark ale reference brew; both of which are slightly better than the already awesome chimay blue. It’s the benchmark, it defines the style, strong ales in general rarely (never) get better than this.

Abt 12 is an absolute winner. It has a splendid beige and persistent foam. Aroma of Belgian yeast, spices and sweet ripe fruit. The taste is incredible. It contains both dark caramel, raisins, prunes, some cherries and an elegant spicy finish which otherwise found only in oak aged beer. Carbonation is low as hop bitterness as well, and it is hard to taste the alcohol strength at 10%. It is definitely a beer to be enjoyed temperate to retain all tastes. Room temperature must be perfect. This beer is from this moment become one of my favorites.

12 oz. bottle. Dark fruit and cherry aromas along with a slight sour note and a touch of cream. The color appears to be a dark brown until it’s put under a bright light where it appears almost a deep rose color which is beautiful. The taste follows from the aroma with cherry, plum, cranberry and apricot along with a very slightly sour woodiness and a bit of Belgian yeastiness. The body is relatively thin for a Christmas beer with this level of fruit and alcohol, but it’s not watery. And speaking of alcohol, this does *not* seem like a 10% ABV beer (which is dangerous)! Finishes with light candied sweetness and lasting fruit flavors, as well as a faint earthy hop bitterness. Delicious Belgian Christmas ale!

Pours a deep brown with a tan, lingering head. There's a good bit of yeast in this bottle. I swirled and poured it all, so there's a good fruity yeast aroma. This is predominant on the nose. Yeast comes through in the flavor as well. There's a good bitterness that sticks around and a somewhat silky, fizzy mouthfeel. There's slight warming in the lower esophagus but not much. There's a tad of vinous, boozy tang on the tongue, though. A good Christmas Belgian ale. Could have more flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Half of an 11.2 oz. bottle, consumed on Christmas Eve, 2016. “A 07 07 19.” Cloudy, root beer float-like appearance. Brown with a large amount of frothy, short-lasting, taupe head. Tangy orange aroma. Lemon juice scent. Smells like a Tripel. Cola flavor with spices. Turmeric and cumin as well as licorice. Nutty taste. Lively and frothy in the palate. Medium body, light for the ABV. Overall, decent but does little for me. Another disappointment from St. Bernardus, a brewery the reputation of which far exceeds the enjoyability of its products.

St. Bernardus Christmas Ale

Pours almost like a Champagne once the cork is popped, lots of head retention with a dark color almost like a brown ale color. Also has a haze to it (chill) Taste has lots of dark fruity character mixed with spices and banana from the yeast. Finishes dry, medium sweetness. Light bitterness. Overall I really liked the warming sensation to this beer while drinking it. The alcohol is present but not at the forefront. Definitely a nice winter beer to have on a cold night.

Delicious Christmas beer I wasn’t able to enjoy until a week after Christmas this year. Big aromas of sweet plums, figs, and sweet bready malt. Very true to the Abbey style. Taste is almost tart which is interesting. I got a ton of fresh cranberry juice and plums. Super bready and sweet, just a classic for the holidays. Awesome as always.

Pours a murky brown with a beige head. The nose has mineral, somewhat sweet caramel and lots of yeasty notes, phenols and esters, bread and a slight banana sensation. Color marrón oscuro, opaco, con capa de espuma marrón de dos dedos de grosor (estilo espuma de afeitar, buena retención). Carbonatación media. Aroma a caramelo, especias y frutas. Sabor que sigue al aroma, algo más dulce de lo esperado, con ligerísimo amargor final. Indudablemente rica, pero tampoco encuentro qué tiene de especial en referencia a otras belgas de su mismo estilo.

Light body, soft yet watery mouthfeel, under carbonated, and a tart finish. I was really hoping this beer would be fantastic. Unfortunately it is just average. Piana dość obfita, gruba, mydlana, szybko opadająca do pierzynki. Barwa rubinowa, klarowna.
