Sapporo Draft Beer / Premium Beer
Sampled this time from a 12 oz. bottle but I like the really cool tall can. Lifted into a tall, handled beer glass with a light to medium yellow body and good carbonation giving a thin long-lasting top. Smell of corn and not much else. The taste is grain and bread. Just a touch of sweetness. Rather dry on the end. A good summer drink I think, served very cold. A pale lager, what do you expect?

50 cl can, all-malt beer. Golden color to light amber, clear, big soapy white head quickly reducing, small lacing. Aroma is mild fruity, chemical, biscuits, hints of caramel and copper. Taste is metallic, initially sweetish/syrupy, metallic bitterness. Oily texture, soft carbonation, sticky finish. Just a little bit over the average,

Can from Maekchu. Thanks! Rather rich malts, slightly richer than usual I think, with some bread and biscuit and a light herbal, lemony hop. Dortmunder-like. Less sweet than expected, lighter, drier, fruity. Lemon and apple, light crackers. Prickly, peppery hop finish is nice. A bit lighter and fruitier than the usual, but not all that different. Nice enough. Probably would be better as a summer beer.

A small can from Jason’s in Guting [small, because way over-priced], rated back-to-back with Sapporo Premium. Aroma: bready, rather sour. Appearance: same as the Premium, maybe a little richer amber, head dissipates completely. Palate: light-bodied, but with a pleasantly slick texture. Soft carbonation, nothing happening at the finish. Taste: lightly bitter, the texture redeems it. This is in the Beer Hunter’s top 500, and a marked improvement on the Premium, but at that price, once is enough. Merry Christmas!

Not interested in clocking up ticks, promised myself I’d only rate the really good ones. However, since they’re so widely available in Taipei, and since I actually worked in Japan for five years, I’ll rate this one just for fun. A small can from Jason’s in Guting, rated back-to-back with Sapporo Yebisu. Aroma: weak, yeasty. Appearance: clear light amber, pours a good head, settling to 2-3mm. of dull foam. Palate: light-bodied, thin texture, flat carbonation, nothing going on. Taste: lightly bitter, but only just. Predictable, fun on the beach, or with yakitori. Merry Christmas!

Sapporo Fuyu Monogatari 冬物語 2015-2016
Can from Family Mart by Jingan MRT, Taipei. Pours a nice gold with a short-lived foamy head. Very light hops and grass on the nose. Taste is crisp and slightly hopped with a slightly sour edge, reminiscent of Kirin. Finish is clean enough but unremarkable. It is a decent lager but no better than a standard Sapporo. At 6% it is quicker to hit the spot tho. Japanese seasonal beer vex me. Often to me they taste like they were meant to be the flagship recipe but something went wrong and they cast it aside for another day. The flavor difference between this and most of their standard affairs is negligible. Overall solid but not one I would look to grab ahead of a good Kirin, Asahi or indeed the newly launched Sapporo draught in Taipei.

Can. Not really what I like about beer - this is sweetish, smells and tastes like soap water. OK, maybe just a bit of hops somewhere, but overall not something I would recommend to others. When you see it, skip it (I had 3 cans at a reception as this was the only beer over there).

Sapporo Fuyu Monogatari 冬物語 2015-2016
Can from New Taipei City Family Mart. Pours dark golden hue, head with lacing. Nose has mild hop spice and some peach and melon notes. Flavor has fruity notes, almost APA-like hop flavors, along with a relatively full malt palate for a Japanese lager. Finishes a little weak, with afterthoughts of malt sugars and some sugerplum dancing somewhere in there. A little dry herbal bitterness in the aftertaste. Tasting this in Taiwan with lotsa thin lagers this winter lager is a cut above the rest, I imagine it is just slightly above average where there are more choices for full-bodied beers. I really like this.

Sapporo Mugi to Hoppu Kuro
This is a great beer. As for details: it has the same exact flavor as the Asahi black-colored beer, at half the price. It competes favorably with microbrewed beers. It’s a world of difference from the major offerings of the major companies, not less than the many that charge twie the price. That said, I found, lately the major beer company have started to offer craft-style beers in small bottles in the 200 yen range that usually surprise me and outpace this maybe 115 yen beer.

Sapporo Craft Label Kaori Odoru Juggling IPA
Can from local Gran Marche store. Nose of caramel and mild piney hop. Reddish/amber color, fast-failing head. Sweet initial flavors, with artificial sweetener, cookie-ish, mild citrus. Thin-medium body. As mrjez sez, it improves noticeably through palate stages ... but it’s not really much of an IPA. Quite weird, actually... but drinkable.

Sapporo Brown Belg
It’s very similar to the Sapporo and Asahi, black-colored "mugi-hop" beer, which is also a very good beer, only beat by the new major-brand bottled craft-style beers or by a real craft beer, though favorably comparable with those too. This is browner in flavor than the black colored Sapporo or Asahi, so makes a change, or, perhaps, adds room for subtlety.

Brewed in Canada. 650 ml can. A very dark brown..reddish highlights pour. Nice head of tannish foam. Smells of roasted malt, grain and some hops? Light roasted malt flavour, dark chocolate, which I would suggest brings the bitter notes to the table. There are some sweet chocolate/caramel tastes as well. Decent body with adequate carbonation. Not bad.

Sapporo Yebisu Wa no Houjun
Can from a six-pack gift set at local Yamaya store. Fruity nose, with a rather rough grainy and hoppy edge. Bright pale straw color. Solid malt/hop balance right off, biscuity, a bit earthy, sweet, and then mildly bitter. Balanced again in finish. Thin-medium body. Nose doesn’t offer up much; flavors are better. Not my favorite among the Yebisu variations.

50 cl can from 7-11 in Shibuya, Tokyo, around 330Y. Cool design. Golden color, medium sized whte head, light persistence. Aroma is sweetish, hints of caramel, honey, syrup, flowers. Light hops, some resin. Taste sweet balanced by a faint bitterness, tasty, umami. Medium body, average carbonation, creamy texture, smooth finish. Well hidden alcohol, quaffablle. Quite nice, marzen-like.

On tap at Fisherman’s Market. Pours clear gold with a white head that collapses into a collar immediately; the collar lasts longer than a lot of macros, though. Aroma of corn, generic beer, blandness. Taste is a little sweet and seemingly has a lot more flavor than most beers of this ilk. Not bad for what it is.

Sapporo Beer Surprise Shifuku no Nigami
50 cl can for approx 300Y from a konbini in Roppongi, Tokyo. Beer surprise, "bitter joy", huh? Apparently produced with Hallertau Tradition and Herkules hops. Golden color, clear with some particles, big bubbly and rocky white head that does not settle down quickly, quite impressive, lacing. Hoppy aroma upfront, resin. Aroma is prominently hoppy, a blend of german and some oversea hops with resiny and vague fruity tones, biscuit malt. Taste is indeed quite bitter, in the level of some german pilseners, if not more. Medium body, slick texture, quite dense, average carbonation, finish is short on the aromatic side but with a prolonged metallic bitterness. Relatively complex and well hopped and out of the ordinary, but not a quencher and may not appeal everyone.

Tap at Koyoen Kitte. Bright gold, cloear, sparkling wiht a fine, thick head. Sorachi nose for sure: lemon, oak or cedar, some butter or oil. Light crisp malt flavor. Sweet and lemony with lots of Sorachi but not painfully so. More than I like but actually this beer is pretty darn well done. Prickly carbonation with a peppery finish. Decent beer.

Sapporo Lager’s High Hojun no Nodogoshi
Can. Oh, man, why did I buy this? Sounds like a Euro wino beer. Passable nose, peaches, oranges, honey, booze. A bit rough and grainy, spirit adjuncts. Deep golden, clear, with a medium foamy head. Boozy, spiritous, sweet but not malty, some fruits, ok peaches and oranges. Light and a bit thin. This is truly a crappo beer, but you know, it is almost drinkable. The spirits stand out too much, the body sucks, it is thin and weak, but smells ok. And costs ¥100. If I am ever broke this will be my go-to.

Sapporo Lager’s High Hojun no Nodogoshi
skunky, cooked vegetables, golden, clear, minimal head, lightly sour, light sweetness, light body, bitter. Foul to the nose; all the worst notes of a happoshu. Surprisingly not terrible on the tongue. Much less sweet than expected, and hides the 7% a.b.v. well. A bit malty, a bit artificial. Somehow it’s lighter and tastier than the other Lager’s High, even though they’ve crammed more booze in in.
