Sapporo Mugi to Hoppu Natsuzora Hop Session
Can. Light zesty nose, some citrus and spicy hop. Medium gold color, Moderate stone fruit, some spirits intrude in mid palate. It thins out and ends on some not entirely pleasant bitter tracks. Interesting nose (for happoshu). Flavors are more or less okay, except for the spirits peeking out.

Sapporo Yebisu Hana Miyabi

350 ml can bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.

Clear golden yellow colour; Half finger head with soapy white foam which fades in 40 seconds; Fair sticky lacing with active slight carbonation; Very fragrant aroma of fair malt, with strong wheat, strong banana, custard, vanilla, floral, icing sugar, cloves, light lemon and grass; Close to light sweet taste of fair malt, with strong wheat, light tartness, banana, light phenolic, floral, light sugar, light cloves, biscuits, light yeast, lemon, fair bitter hops and grass; Close to medium body. Slick and fairly crisp palate; Mouth feel is fairly good maltyness in a solid background. Wheaty but not very tart, the wheat and barley mix feel a little odd as a Weissbier. Strong banana ester and quite clovey. Flowery with fairly light sweetness. Light biscuit with light lemon to round. Not bad at all!... Hoppiness is floral, light lemon and grass in nose and taste; Bitterness is fair for an abrupt, light astringent wheaty and malty finish; Quite dry after taste. Estery clovey and slightly bitter to mouth.

Comments: As a Kristallweiss this is decent, with strong banana ester and clovey phenolic abundant in aroma and taste. It just the macro lager base is so prevalent it can?t be shaken off with barely enough amount wheatyness. If they keep the yeast and sell it as a Hefeweiss, it may be even better. Drinkable!

P.S. Thanks for the "1999" Youtube video for my 1999th rathing!

Sapporo White Belg

350ml can bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty.

Clear light golden yellow colour with no yeast sediments; Three-quarter finger head with soapy white foam which lasts for 90 seconds; Good sticky lacing with active carbonation; Aroma of light lager malt, with strong coriander, fair orange peels, wheat, floral, sugar, fair spices, strong bread, citrus and light grass; Mid to light sweet taste of light malt, with strong wheat, light tartness, grain spirit, light coriander, light orange peels, light wet paper, floral, very light molasses, light spices, strong bread, light lemon and very light bitter grassy hops; Mid to light body. Slick and smooth palate; Mouth feel is fair maltyness in a thick, slightly soapy background. Notable grain spirit presence, quite wheaty but not tart. Fair amount of coriander and spice but lesser orange peels. Fair sweetness, bready with thin lemon to round. Kinda okay… Hoppiness is floral, fair spices, citrus and light grass in nose. Floral, light spices, light lemon and very light grass in taste; Bitterness is light for an abrupt, low astringent bready finish; Quite dry after taste. Grainy boozy and quite easy to mouth.

Comments: Another Happoshu Witbier, with fairly decent spicy aroma, but taste is marred by wet paper and obvious garin spirits. Feels a bit too gooey and bready, more a lager than witbier. Okay to drink but fell far short of a decent Witbier. Once is enough.

From old tasting notes. Nearly opaque reddish brown color with a huge creamy tan head. Roasted malt aroma with sour undertones. Roasted malt flavor has a fruity sour character upfront. A mild dryness pervades in the midtaste. Light dry aftertaste has a hint of licorice. Quite tasty and unique.

Big white head doesn’t last. Clear yellow body. Faint grainy aroma. Sweet grainy taste with strawy notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, faintly mealy mouthfeel. Sweetish grainy strawy aftertaste with fruity notes. Not at all bad. As industrial, straightforward lagers go, this is about as good as it gets. (0.5l can, from Lawson, Kanazawa.)

Sapporo Mugi To Tohoku Hop
Crystal clear, medium gold, small white head. Grassy with hints of a light spicy hop. Has a Czech Pils quality to it, grain with a mild hop bite, smooth and not overly carbonated. As a resident of Tohoku, I might have a bias towards this beer but I find it better than the summer offering from Kirin that I just had.

Sapporo Black
22 ounce can into lager glass, canned on 8/8/2016. Pours crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, brown sugar, toasted brown bread, light coffee/nuttiness, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roast/bready malts and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, brown sugar, toasted brown bread, light coffee/nuttiness, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/grassy hop and roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, brown sugar, toasted brown bread, light coffee/nuttiness, herbal, grass, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malts and light earthy hop flavors; with a great hop/roast bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from hop/roast bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a delicious schwarzbier style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malts and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth, clean, and refreshing to drink. Nice well rounded and complex Munich/roasted malt profile; with just enough hops for balance. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Sapporo Black
DOC: 3/16/2017

2015 BJCP Category: 8B Schwarzbier

AROMA: Medium malt presence, especially dark malt with slight confectionery overtones. Roasted malt is present akin to a black iced coffee aroma (nothing acrid or burnt). Faint herbal/spicy hops presence. Clean fermentation. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Very dark [mahogany] brown with magenta/garnet blush. Large tan foam retains and laces well. Clear body. 3/3

FLAVOR: Light-moderate malt flavor with mild sweetness up front. There is a toasted bready presence in the background. Low earthy/spicy bitterness offers balance throughout the palette. As it finishes there’s a fairly assertive taste of coffee with cream and a roasted malt flavor on the aftertaste without astringency. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Texture is smooth and just the faintest bit watery. This could be served on nitro just as well. Plenty of flavor and easy to quaff at only 5% ABV. Versatile palette would pair well with a savory dinner or dessert. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Definitely to-spec in all aspects. This beer could hold it own with authentic German examples. 9/10

TOTAL SCORE: 44/50

Sapporo Reserve
DOC: 3/2/2017

2015 BJCP Category: 2A International Pale Lager

AROMA: Light sweet grainy malt without cereal notes. Minor presence floral/spicy hops. Clean fermentation. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Clear golden color; large bright white froth mostly dissipates, but does leave a bit of lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: A moderate, firm amount of sweet grainy malt. Almost has a bit of a caramel flavor in the background. Palette becomes a bit more rustic and cracker-like on the departure. There is a low presence of spicy/earthy hops as it’s finishing with a slightly dry bitter aftertaste. Clean fermentation. Well-balanced and quite enjoyable. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body and carbonation. More smooth and calm than effervescent. Has the refreshing quality of a pale lager with a clean aftertaste. Plenty of character for 5% ABV and possibly sessionable. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Not the greatest beer in the world, but for the style it’s one of the best. This proves macro lagers can be enjoyable when brewed and served properly. 9/10

Can, from 7/11 in Narita. Gold-amber colour, smells like a yuzu shandy. I guess that’s what it is. Has some hop bitterness, yuzu and rind qualities, is actually fairly balanced though the base beer seems really nothing special. The overall effect is to tease me with a refreshing yuzu taste, only for that to clash a bit with a firm, dryish pale lager.

Drunk from the can by the konbini. 140 yen or so, nice hop aroma a bit on the weak side but present. Thin body and virtually no malt character but the hops kept things palatably citrusy. Alright for the price and will do in a pinch.

DOC: 3/16/2017

2015 BJCP Category: 2A International Pale Lager

AROMA: Medium-low clean sweet malty presence with a corn or cereal-like character. No discernible hop character. Clean fermentation profile. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Yellow golden hue; brilliant clarity. Large bright white froth retains and laces well. 3/3

FLAVOR: Medium-low pale malt flavor throughout. Some sweetness initially with a touch of caramel. Second half becomes a bit drier and rustic with a cracker-like flavor of starch. Finishes with a brief corn or rice cereal sweetness before fading away cleanly. Hops are subtle, but may account for a mild spicy sensation towards the end. Clean fermentation profile overall. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body; medium-high CO2. Smooth texture with a clean, crisp finish. Somewhat refreshing. Quite efficient and sessionable for 4.9% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: For a macro lager, this is actually quite good and easily drinkable. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find fresh so it’s usually oxidated. 8/10

Can from 7-11 (which, I think, is the only sales point for this). Bready nose, with grain, and some zesty hops. Bright gold color with a thin white head. Moderately malty initial, a bit sweet and then buttery. Bittering kicks in quite late and lingers a good long while. Sapporo calls this a pilsener, but it’s really more like a Japanese premium lager.

Can, 0.65l. Quite a beautiful can, actually. Clear golden pour with two finger soapy white head. Pretty good head retention, minimal lacing. Malty sweet nose, a bit herbal and grainy. Pretty much typical for the style. Thin body with a bit softer then average carbonation. Texture is surprisingly thick, nice and smooth on the tongue. Taste and aroma nothing out of ordinary. Bittersweet. Malty, grainy, herbal. Corn. Bready. Some peppery notes. Slight acidity in the finish. Overall, ok for what it is. Nothing spectacular but quite drinkable. Good thirst quencher.

Sapporo Lager Beer
I like Sapporo’s range of beers, available in most convenience stores and bottle shops around Japan. This lager is slightly darker, richer and more malty than their Black Label (which is everywhere), but doesn’t compare to one of the Ebisu (Yebisu) beers. Enjoyable, if just as a little variation from the standard Japanese beer - Super Dry or Ichiban Shibori.

Big bottle. Purchased in a fancy Kobe supermarket near 三宫。Pours golden with foamy head. Nose is herbal hop notes, rising bread. Flavor is very light and dry grain malt, heavy dose of green hops near the finish. Aftertaste has slight bitterness. A good international style lager - definitely worth having over suntory and asahi when in japan.
