Mad Squirrel Roadkill
Cask at St Albans Beer & Cider Festival 2017, St Albans, Herts. A hazy golden/yellow coloured pour with a healthy bubbly white head on top. Hoppy, citrus, tropical fruit aroma almost in the Kernel mould. The taste is rather good, hoppy, citrus, tropical fruit, juicy and highly drinkable even though it was served far too warm. This would have been even better on keg. Decent effort and the best beer at the fest for me anyway.

Cask at St Albans Beer & Cider Festival 2017, St Albans, Herts. A hazy golden coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, fruity aroma. The taste is rather subdued, vaguely hoppy, fruity and served way too warm. When cask is on form it is great, when it is served like this it is crap.

Handpull cask at the Grain & Hop Store as Mad Squirrel London Porter. Ruby brown with a big creamy khaki head. Not completely translucent but it catches a nice glint of light. Chocolate malt aroma with caramel milkshake, chewy Hobnob, all complemented by a nice strong coffee. Sweet taste with herbal notes, turning slightly more bitter at the end of the sip. Liquorice and cherry brandy in the aftertaste. Body is too thin for my liking, especially for these kinds of beers. All in all it’s a fairly cracking cask porter.

Bottle at home. Poured nicely, with a gentle hop aroma. This really was a proper pale ale, gentle but fresh hops and a maltiness that added to the mouthfeel. I really couldn’t taste the alcohol in what, ultimately, was a very good pale ale. I liked this a lot.

Bottle at home. It looked good and there was a nice aroma of citrus and pine hops from the glass. There was a strong bitterness from the hops and it was quite thirst quenching. I did however find it to be a bit gassy, one of my pet hates with all beers. Towards the end the bitterness was overpowering and I came to the conclusion that I have had better.

Red Squirrel Hopfest Pale Ale
A really lovely pale ale. It looked good in the tankard and had a gentle aroma of hops. The flavour was even better, gentle floral hops and a pleasant caressing mouth feel. There was a subtlety to this beer and I found the light citrus hop flavour to be most appealing. The fact that it was under 4.2% abv was a bonus and showed the skill of the brewery. It was drunk outside on the hottest day of the year (so far) in the shade while reading the Guns of Navarone while I waited for the kids to finish reading before I tucked them in. Pure pleasure.

Keg at RS HW, 28/03/17 followed by a growler at home 30/03/17. Light murky haze on a yellow orange pour with a solid off white cap that retains well. The nose on this beer is outstanding, dank sticky hop presence, pine resin, fleshy citricana, grapefruit peel, orange pith, straw, toasted brioche. Taste comprises melon, orange pith, light grapefruit, citric tinged straw, toasted bread, airy malts. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light drying close peppered with dank hop bitterness. This is a super solid session IPA with a big danko hop strike. If the badge had ’Verdant’ or ’Cloudwater’ on it I wouldn’t have thought otherwise. Best MS (RS) beer by a country mile ... could guzzle this for hours! Huge amount of flavour for the ABV.
