Free State Stormchaser Summer IPA
Bottle pour into shaker pint glass. Appearance was hazy light brown with decent sparkle, 1/2 finger-width white foamy head, poor retention, nice soapy lacing. Aroma was dank resinous with some citrus, light fruit. Taste was as aroma--bitter dominant. Palate was medium bodied with thick, slippery texture, average carbonation and mostly bitter finish. Overall, bitter dominates sort of like a weak West Coast IPA. OK.

Free State Bread & Butter Match Made in Helles
Willebecher pint draft at BRGR Kitchen + Bar in Leawood, Kansas. The pour is mostly clear golden with a ½ inch foamy white head. The aroma is clean cereal grain and straw. The taste is the clean fresh cereal grain malt, balanced nicely with grass, straw and slight sweetness. The palate is light to medium bodied, active natural carbonation and a crisp softly sweet mineral finish. Tasty, easy drinking beer.

Free State Post Rock Pilsner
12floz bottle, BBD: 09.22.2017, paid $9 for a six-pack, and poured this bottle’s contents into a nonic glass. Bubbles rise in the middle of the golden body to support a thick half finger of foam. Very nice nose consists of herbs, grass, and hay. This is a very fine Americanized pilsner. The hops are fresh providing vibrancy, and cereal grains provide just enough of a base to to lend a bit of grit. The body is light, but flavor flavor is maximum in this pilsner. More traditional than what most American craft brewers produce as pilsners. I approve.

Free State Dirty Kanza Kolsch
12floz bottle, it appears the freshness date has rubbed off (should be this summer’s edition, new label and all), paid about $1.50, and poured into a pint glass. It appears golden, and an airy head dissipates to a thin layer. Smells like normal cereal grains with a light touch of garden variety herbs. Palate reflects freshness, and is on mark for the style as it is crisp and flavor is of lightly toasted bread. This is a fine kolsh.

Free State Stormchaser Summer IPA
Free State’s Stormchaser is maybe less exciting than some of the brewery’s hop-forward brews, but it definitely works as a by-the-numbers hoppy beer. Orange color. Citrusy and floral hop nose. Pine, lemon, grapefruit, and orange flavors.Nice balance between caramel malt and hops.

Free State Yakimaniac IPA
Bottle. Hazy and pale yellow with a towering head. The aroma and flavors are gristy, earthy, lightly citrusy. This is a bit like a hoppy American wheat, with a bit of a sedimented feel, but still full of raw citrus rind. (#6645, 6/7/2017)

Free State Old Backus Barleywine
Pours a dark brown with minimal head. Nose is funky - some malt and chocolate, but a bit of an odd smell, too. Taste is awesome, though - some bourbon, black licorice, coffee. Chewy mouthfeel - almost like food. Good stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Free State Stormchaser Summer IPA
Bottle. A good, hearty pour, darkish-amber and well-topped. Nice mouthfeel, tingly and fun. The flavor is a bit different than expected, a bit bready, yeasty, musty ... now that I read there’s a component of wheat malt that makes sense. There’s an underlying hoppy twist, but the weird sweet-tart thing is a bit of a distraction. (#6630, 5/25/2017)

Free State Oatmeal Stout
I’ve had this before in bottle and on draft, this is from a 12floz bottle (BBD: 05.19.2017) that I paid a $1.50 unit price. Poured into a nonic glass, and small light-brown head sits atop a very dark-brown colored body. Smell is good like a cold brewed coffee. Palate is medium, dry, and has a hollow quality. Moderately sharp roasted malts creates the sense of drinking gardening soil. Overall it’s pretty good.

Free State Ad Astra Ale
12floz bottle with a BBD 05.31.2017 imprinted on the neck. Looks about as amazing as a beer can get. A one-finger head settles to a frothy half-finger leaving webs as the dark-copper body lowers with each drink. Smells good too, consisting of toasted caramel and mossy earthiness. This is carries through in the easy going palate. An excellent American altbier/amber ale as it is a very well composed malt centric ale.

Free State Old Backus Barleywine
Free State’s Old Backus is a malt bomb with lots of class. It pours brown. It has a nose that leans heavily toward toasted malt sugar - brown sugar, caramel, and cooked fruit. Caramel, molasses, butterscotch, vanilla, chocolate, stone fruits, and dark fruits make up the flavor profile. While this definitely leans more toward the English malt-forward style, you still get some zesty hops toward the finish. Gorgeous stuff.

Free State Winterfest IPA
Free State makes some of the best IPA’s in the Midwest. They make it look easy, but Winterfest is a thoughtful, well-constructed ale that demonstrates expertise. Pour is golden orange with a long-lasting white head. Spicy hop aroma that translates into a citrusy, resinous, grassy, floral, and semi-piney taste. This beer is hop-forward, but there’s a sturdy malt backbone that supports everything. Crisp feel and the texture is somewhat oily. It’s a Winter IPA that deserves a place alongside your gingerbread.
