Free State ’Czech That’ Pils
It pours clear golden with a white head. The taste has floral hops, noble hops, clean pils malt and pleasing spice. It has a medium body with soft carbonation. The taste has the aroma notes with a way more herbal notes, light sulfur and dry malt. Solid.

Free State Frost Flower
12 oz single purchased at MDL Wine and Spirits in Overland Park, Kansas. Best by month 2, week 4 notched on label. The pour is mostly clear golden with a foamy one inch off white head that falls slow with splotchy lace. The aroma is clean cracker cereal malt, along with a gentle floral hop. The taste mineral, cracker malt, and earth, softly spice floral hop notes. The palate is medium to light bodied, active carbonation and dry mineral finish. Nice one.

4.1
Free State Winterfest IPA
Free State makes some of the best IPA’s in the Midwest. They make it look easy, but Winterfest is a thoughtful, well-constructed ale that demonstrates expertise. Pour is golden orange with a long-lasting white head. Spicy hop aroma that translates into a citrusy, resinous, grassy, floral, and semi-piney taste. This beer is hop-forward, but there’s a sturdy malt backbone that supports everything. Crisp feel and the texture is somewhat oily. It’s a Winter IPA that deserves a place alongside your gingerbread.

ice pine aroma, bit of cream too. Light roastiness too. Taste is great. Quite subtle. Chocolate, light coffee, then citrus fruitiness. Bit funky maybe. Creamy, very nice. Subdued in its deliciousness. Further down hop hit has gone, just lovely maltiness.

Free State Ad Astra Ale
I get it, there’s lots of American Amber Ales out there, but to my mind, Ad Astra is underrated. Deep amber pour with a light brown head and lacing. Biscuit and toffee aromas from the toasted malt. Flavor goes with what you smell. You also get some caramel. Tea and apricot hop flourishes, too. The hops are present, but the bitterness is kept low. Smooth and partially creamy mouthfeel. A paradigm-shifter? No. A tasty beer? Absolutely.

Free State Yakimaniac IPA
Free State does some lovely things with hops, and this batch of cones out of Yakima was certainly not wasted. Golden, hazy pour. Lemongrass, tropical fruit (namely pineapple and grapefruit) aromas. There’s definitely a big alpha acid presence. Plenty of grapefruit, pine, and lemon peel bitterness. Still, there’s enough crackery malt to keep it from being astringent. Juicy, oily mouthfeel. Very well done.

Free State Octoberfest
There’s some German blood flowing through Kansas, and Free State apparently channeled all of it to churn out this copper-colored beer. It smells malty, bready, and lightly chocolaty. Its flavors are mostly sweet. There’s caramel and a mildly spicy finish from the hops. Balanced feel. Rich but not as full-bodied as some fest beers. This beer has long history with Free State, yet it continues to be a winner. That’s pretty fucking special.

Free State Garden Party
Free State’s crafted something really weird and also really nice here. When a beer’s brewed with Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic, I would generally say, "It ain’t broke. Why fix it?" Especially with additions as odd as these: basil, cucumber, and juniper berries. And no doubt, the end result is truly odd, but it manages to respect each ingredient. You taste all of them. The piney, citrusy hops start first. They quickly transition into savory basil. From there the spicy juniper picks things up and the finish has a refreshing cucumber note. Aroma captures everything too. Vegetal, spicy, and herbal. This could be pretty gross if it wasn’t so well executed. Luckily, Free State knows their way around infusions.

Free State Estado Libre Lager
Dark copper color. Interesting take on the style. It’s much sweeter and a bit syrupy than the typical Mexican lager. So, i think they were really going for the actual Austrian Vienna style. I love that I has flavor but it’s just too sweet for the style. A bit of rye bread, low hops.

Dim golden color. The beer has a lot of additions bit isn’t an adjunct laden brew. Even the cucumber is light and could bt missed. Some botanicals, which are stronger than the cucumber. Find beer, a little slick base beer could be better but mostly fun.

Free State Stormchaser Summer IPA
Aroma of caramel and tart citrus rind, but has an odd soapy quality that knocks it down a notch for me. Very attractive medium orange color that is barely see through and has bubbles rising to the top of a bright white head. The taste is very malty (again caramel) with the same orange rind quality from the aroma. Pleasantly bitter and refreshing, it truly is a summer IPA. The aftertaste is a little metallic which detracts from the taste a bit. Nice palate, smooth albeit a little watery with good refreshing carbonation. Not bad, but the other reviewers were right on this one. Buy Free State’s Cloud Hopper instead - it’s much better.
