750 ml corked and caged bottle, cellared 20 months. Hueless deep murky brown, tan cumulus foam eventually settles and lasts. Aroma of spicy yeasts and darker malts. Taste is lots of spicy yeast and dark candi sugar, some soft fruitiness in the middle, finishes bitter herbal yeasty. Well carbonated, medium bodied, moderately hopped. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

Ommegang Great Beyond
Rich copper and bronze coloured body with a nice, four centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of deep toffee, rich malts and a lot of alcohol and a touch of hops - not too much though, considering the style. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich toffee and earthy flavours with a lot of grain and caramelised sugars showing some nuttiness as well. Aftertaste has glimmers of hop bitterness, some subdued grassy and floral elements and a bit more alcohol than expected. Overall, a decent Imperial IPA with some good flavours and a nice profile, but nothing special here. Worth trying if you can find it easily and it isn’t too expensive, otherwise, it may not be worthwhile. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased a few minutes earlier on 20-January-2017 from Whole Foods in New York (Bowery), New York for US$2,99 sampled in my hotel here in New York on 20-January-2017.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Poured typical stout dark brown, almost black with a 2 finger bubbly mocha head. Good retention and lacing. Nose yields aromas of dark pitted fruits, chocolate covered cherries, roast and oatmeal cookies. Light sweetness with all of the above represented in the flavor. Medium bodied and silky smooth on the tongue.

Very dark brown pour, tall tan head, persistent foam cap and good lacing. Fruity yeast ester aroma, spice, pepper. Taste is a balance between sweet and bitter. Fruit flavours are darker than on the nose. Bit of earthiness. Herbal bitter and spicy finish.

Ommegang XV - 15th Anniversary Ale
Bready with cherries, black dried fruit and vanilla. Phenolic spiciness. Round but distinctly dry. A tribute to some Belgian originals with some of its own originality. Bottle from PG probably years ago. Cleverly leafy-dry against the cascade of black dry fruits that might otherwise be cloying. Over several sips the palate becomes unexpectedly creamy. I’m glad I paid a little too much for this at Premier Gourmet in Amherst near Buffalo, NY.

Very nice try at a Belgian quad, just not the top. Great appearance, dark amber-brown body with a slight tan head. I scent spice and dark fruit, raisin and plum. The taste is more like a subdued black cherry, malt and a hint of the alcohol. Rather Chimayish, good effort at the best.

Ommegang Nirvana IPA
This bottled brew from a grocery store was served at a cool temperature and poured a small sized head of foamy finely sized white colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a typically carbonated body hazy yellow white colored body and an excellent lacing. The mild aroma was malty and musty. The semi-sharp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a mild citrus aftertaste. The ok flavor contained notes of citrus hops and malt. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.

12 ounce bottle - $3.79 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. Appearance: Pours a hazy, medium-toned amber-brown body with an inch of thickish, long-lasting, light beige head. Smell: Toasty baked bread with a coating of darkish caramel. Chopped dried fruits swirled with spirits. Slight, sharp clove and cardamom notes convey some spiciness. Taste: Sweet and bready with a golden syrup, caramel quality. Quickly regains the phenolic spiciness from the aroma with a sustained flavor of cracked clove. Fruity tastes of bananas, red berries, plums and dates. Slightly herbal on the sweetish, warming finish with the clove lingering into the aftertaste. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Fluffy, lightly sticky mouthfeel with some plush carbonation. Overall: It’s sufficient.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle stamped 6060952120905. Decent looking reddish-amber pour under a long lasting head. The aroma is slightly fruity with cracker malts but no booze. Medium body. The taste has a somewhat forward boozy-roasted malt character unlike other Belgian Strong Ales I have had. There is a clean character about it and a mild bitterness to end.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 5/6/2016. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, passion fruit, papaya, citrus peel, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, passion fruit, papaya, citrus peel, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, peach, apricot, pineapple, mango, melon, passion fruit, papaya, citrus rind, pepper, pine, cracker, biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness/carbonation, increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, bready/grainy, and fairly crisp balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is fairly well hidden; a mild warmth lingers after the finish. Overall this is a very nice DIPA. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical/earthy hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink for the ABV. Really nice and juicy on hops; with a nice malt backbone that is never sweet. Fairly aggressive, but not overwhelming on bitterness. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Milk and Hops, Chelsea. Pours a dark amber / chestnut-brown color with a nice fizzy froth of tan head. There’s a good amount of lace on the glass as well. Belgian yeast, clove, banana, caramel, and some nutty notes. Fairly sweet, with some dark fruit and brown sugar coming through as well on the flavor. Over carbonated. A bit sticky. Pretty good, with the mouthfeel bring my least favorite component of an otherwise well made beer.

Big bottle with commonmac . Hazy gold, maybe some sediment. Medium white head that clings. Smells of sweet yeast, nice aroma. Spice is prevalent, especially clove. Fuzzy yeast, light grain, banana. Spicy, fruity burn. Finish is a tiny bit metallic, overall it could have ended better . More sediment and funkier as you work down the bottle and I liked it even more. Excellent showing. Definitely serve me up another.

Large bottle acquired as a Christmas gift from blonderedhead. Consumed during college football championship in a Belgian snifter glass with commonshawn. Quarter finger off white head. Yeast and spices on the nose with some banana. Cloudy golden orange color. Taste begins with a sweet, nearly bubblegum quality. Tropical fruit and a spiciness one would expect from a tripel. More sweetness as the sip progresses. The mouthfeel is drier than I anticipated. Gains a little funk on the second glass. Very enjoyable. Ommegang does this style well and succeeds again here. I’m ready to serve myself another one.

A soft but steady pour produces a two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a pale amber color that shows a somewhat hazy, honey hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of floral citrus zest, pears, a bit of melon, some phenolic clove spiciness, and an earthy, musty, lightly funky base note that adds some complexity. Light alcohol notes add some spiciness and warmth to the aroma. As the beer warms, a dry, pale cracker like malt character becomes more noticeable with a lightly nutty, kiss of whole grain aromatics.

Well carbonated, with a prickly, zippy texture, and the body is quite light for a beer of this strength. Lingering clove flavors in the finish add some spice, and there is a hint of phenolic, tongue numbing character (the alcohol might boost this too). This has a citrus like fruitiness to it somehow, somewhat like juicy fruit bubble gum, and is definitely honey-like in character. This has a soft mustiness, perhaps a hint of ripe cheese, and hint of phenolic funkiness to it that belies the Brettanomyces bottle character; it is still on the soft side, and could certainly develop for quite some time. Up front the beer is quite dry, but there is quite a bit of perceived sweetness in the finish. This has a rounded, cracker, and whole grain bread like malt character to it that provides a nice anchor to the other flavors.

An enjoyable beer, I seem to be having few, decent, Belgian inspired beers lately, and this one certainly hits the spot.

750mL bottle. The aroma has some spicy white pepper character along with some metallic hints and some esters with hints of clove. Hazy golden-orange body with a medium, strong, fizzy white head. Starts with a bit of a bitter, earthy hop character. Some metallic character comes through in the middle before a little sweet lemon takes over. Finishes with a more bitter flavoring. The mouthfeel on this is just exquisite. Really good, if not on the hoppy side...

Bottle from LCBO. Pours dining room table brown with a rather disappointing head. Interesting swirls of flavour in this one: molasses, dried dark fruit, molasses, red licorice, brown sugar & some booze. A little sharp around the edges. Wonder if cellaring would improve both the balance & flavours. But not to worry: this is a wonderful beer to sip on as my holiday draws to a slow close. Cheers.
