Ommegang Nirvana IPA
DATE: July 28, 2017... OCCASION: Anniversary #16 with the love of my life and the mother of my three boys--couldn’t think of a beer more aptly named to describe how I feel today... GLASSWARE: Liberty Craft House inverted pint.... pours an effervescent, subtly opaque golden amber body that produces robust bubbles that cling to the glass while also basing quite a prolific white head... webbing and cragging at a three-fingered height, it looks the part of an IPA... the Bravo and Simcoe clearly propound dank smell of earth, while the Centennial, Citra, and Amarillo suggest grapefruit, melon, light pine and resin... not overpowering, but welcoming... at 6.5%, smooth, vibrant, balanced, and not bitter at its 60 IBUs, with medium body and lingering finish... oddly, more attention gets paid at its back end than at the teeth... the fruitiness of this beer is appropriate--neither bitter nor biting--and the grapefruit and melon are balanced by light caramel and biscuit malts... some resin, but more floral bouquet... not much else to write or probe... as Ommegangs go, another solid offering but not one that makes me wish I had tried sooner... pushes the style forward or has a unique Ommegang quality to it...

Ommegang Glimmerglass Saison
Light golden pour with lots of thick, white foam that lasts. Some sediment on the bottom of the bottle. Spices are prominent in the nose, clove, pepper. The yeast is slightly muted and some grassy hops are present. More ester flavors in the taste, bringing out some lemon. The clove and pepper are well-balanced and the malt is biscuity and smooth. Light body, moderate fizz and a good dry finish. Lighter and hoppier and perhaps a little more American than their Hennepin.

Pretty good! The price at the brewpub which had it on tap was way over the top - something crazy like $11 for a 10 oz pour. But it was pretty tasty and hid the 9% really well with its yeast and malt notes.

On tap at Parrys pizza Northglenn. Thin white head, heavy aroma of dried fruits, raisin, oak, and bourbon. Taste was as expected, maybe a bit thinner than I was expecting. Overall, an enjoyable quad, that seemed to benefit from its time in the barrel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ommegang Short Sleeve Saison
Best by Jan. 2018., consumed in Apr. 2017. Bleached yellow. Sticky and persistent white froth. Hopcentric nose of lemongrass, kumquat, leafy hops, lactic acid, airy phenols, cracker and dried grass. Underlying apricot and clove. Fluffy, lightweight carbonation. A rounded lactic tartness is met with orange pith and lychee hop flavors. Hints of mango and oily gooseberry slowly emerge. Malt leans toward starchy, and there’s some unripe banana that plagues the cleanness and detracts from the delicacies beneath. Drier shades of malt are overtaken by a fermenting wheatlike slipperiness that hinders the dry mouthfeel. Soft flowery hop flavors add some elegance to the center. Notes of coriander prevail in the spice-heavy and mildly soapy finish, as a zesty but well-integrated hop bitterness of lemongrass and gooseberry lingers. It’s nice to see a sub-5% saison, and this is certainly serviceable despite the subtle banana, soapiness, starchiness and over-hopped aroma which knock the score down a few points. But I’ll stick with their Glimmerglass and Cooperstown since both of those are less spice-dominant and more traditional in spirit.

December 4, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs and mabel - 750ml bottle. Bubbly bright deep red with a smallish off-white head. sweet, fruity and yeasty aroma, restrained alcohol - a bit spicy and lush; hint of smoke? Taste is more a fruity/raisin over sweet dubbel - yeast and sugar. Slick, light body, weak carbonation - a little appleseed bitterness in the quick finish - still damned fun to drink.

Ommegang / Liefmans Pale Sour
330 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, best before 1/2019. Pours slightly hazy pale golden/yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of tart lemon, lime, plum, cherry, peach, apricot, red apple, pear, green grape, white wine, hay, straw, herbal, grass, wheat, cracker, light pepper/musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast and moderate pale malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of tart lemon, lime, plum, cherry, peach, apricot, red apple, pear, green grape, white wine, hay, straw, herbal, grass, wheat, cracker, light pepper/musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and light yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, plum, cherry, peach, apricot, red apple, pear, green grape, white wine, hay, straw, herbal, grass, wheat, cracker, light pepper/musty funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/sourness balance, and zero puckering flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from tart/sourness, lightly increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately grainy/acidic, and slightly tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6.9%. Overall this is a very nice sour blonde ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/acidic yeast and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the balanced tart/sour/lactic finish. Very unique profile for a sour ale. Massive amounts of pome/stone fruits with mild funk; and nice levels of tart/sour character in balance with pale malts. A very enjoyable offering.

Ommegang Bigger and Bretter
Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy/fizzy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is hazy medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain/bread, cookie), moderately yeasty (basement, cobwebs), with notes of cinnamon/cassia, sassafras, band-aid, unripe peach, bark, autumn leaves. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Quite a nifty beer, from quite a solid brewery (one of the few breweries that got better after a larger brewery got involved...almost everything got better after Duvel came into the picture, honestly). This is an Orval-esque delight...complex and enticing nose, and a very dry finish (not as starkly bone dry as Orval can be, but more so than Baroque Belgique from Green Flash). Clean and nicely balanced, and quite drinkable for 7.6%...the alcohol is surprisingly quiet. A little shy of "OMG" level excitement but definitely 4.0 quality. Will certainly buy a few more despite the rather steep $16 price tag...even though Baroque Belgique is better and cheaper, this is a slightly different animal and worth revisiting.

On tap at the Pour Taproom (SC). Pours with a Very dark brown colored body that’s opaque in the snifter and topped by a sizable semi-durable, creamy, beige head. The head leaves plenty of spotty lacing on the glass. This looks appropriate and worthy of a Belgian. Medium+ carbonation; medium body. Lots of ripe and dried fruit in the rather spicy aroma. The flavor is bolder and less sweet than the aroma suggests. Mildly bitter, this is more bitter than usual for style. Well hidden ABV.

DATE: July 17, 2017... OCCASION: Game of Thrones Season 7!
