when cold aroma is molasses, some cocoa, and yeasts. a dark brown cloud appearance. taste was a bit sweet, with odd belgium yeasts. for a stout, it was off. sweetness was not candy, but a bit of brown sugar and molasses. got better as it warms. not outstanding, not awful. bottle.

Ommegang Smoked Porter
12 oz bottle from Argonaut. Here's a prime "why is this rated so low?" beer. 62? Why? Looks like a normal porter, dark body and creamy head. Aroma is malty with chocolate up front and a faint whiff of smoke comes out. Woody hops are there too with suggestions of cacao nibs. The mouthfeel is full and creamy. Layers of malty goodness cascade over the palate. There's full chocolate, coffee, raisins, toffee, all balanced by earthy hop bite. The faintest fruity yeast character is buried in there. It's an excellent porter. I would love more smoke character, though. It's not even worth putting "smoked" on the label. If Alaskan Smoked Porter is the hallmark of the style, this isn't even close to being smoky enough. But again, I love the depth of the malt character here.

Pours very hazy, murky gold with a fine off white head. Nose is a nice burst of juicy hops that lean more floral than tart. Flavor is rich and heavily favors orange and tangerines with some hop bitterness nipping behind it. Heavy carbonation but other wise smooth. Very tasty.

Ommegang Game of Thrones #9 - Winter is Here
(bottled) Not nearly as carbonated as previous versions. Poured a large white head. Body is a cloudy dull golden color. Muted hoppy aroma. First flavor impression is of banana and clove, followed by the hop bitterness. Pepper comes out on the tongue a couple minutes after drinking. A small bit of warmth to it. Very gassy mouth feel. It's OK, and a fairly clean brew. But, didn't enjoy it nearly as the past few.

Ar: Passionfruit, cantaloupe, and marmalade; dense fruit; some vanilla. Ap: Golden with lots of chunks, looks like a snow globe; small off-white head with poor retention, leaving a ring and a spotty hazy. T: Rosy alcohol and banana; medium sweetness; pear and black pepper; chalk and toasty dough; peppery hop flavor, a little leafy; high and fairly refined bitterness; finish is pear skins, chalk, and black pepper. P: Medium body with very high carbonation; lushly sparkling; very dry finish. O: The only knock to this beer is its appearance; the flavors, mouthfeel, and aroma are great--like seriously great.

Ommegang Hennepin
Part of a three pack from the holidays gifted from my father, Doug Theresa Aadland, Ginnepin Saison Ale is an ale brewed with juniper berries, lemon and lime zest, orange peel, ginger, coriander, and grains of paradise crafted by Brewery Ommegang. The aroma of yeast, ginger, and coriander is sensed on the nose. The appearance is a hazy gold with an inch white head. Carbonation is moderate with a tinge of ginger to go with it. The alcohol content of 7.7%. Belgian yeast and banana provide the usual flavors we expect in a Belgian beer. Saison is fluid with the yeast. Juniper berries add a sharp, light tart to the beer. Ginger is tasted from start to finish and easily picked out with the carbonation. Orange peel is fully comprehended in the finish. Lemon is dominant over the lime when you drink. Lime compliments the yeasty body and is left behind on the mouthfeel after the finish. Coriander is sensible on the take. Grains of paradise leaves a peppery complexion to the beer. Gennepin is a follow up to Hennepin, which had ginger, coriander, orange peel, and grains of paradise. Coriander is weaker in this variation while the lemon and lime zest rule in the mouthfeel. Juniper berries brings a light tart bite to the beverage. Gennepin is an amazing Belgian and wonderfully complex. I enjoyed this a lot; the ginger, lemon, and lime complexion is my favorite part to this brew. Cheers. Prost. Drink for the love of beer. pours unclear light brown-orange with a frothy and creamy beige head offering good retention and lacing. spicy grapey maltiness, concord grapes, minty eucalyptus, bitter unknownst herbs, very spicy and peppery rye-like cereals, some sweetness - demerara like you can find in a rye whiskey; dark cardamom. bright to moderate carbonation, light to medium body, semi-sweet yet drying corky-spicy-peppery finish. must have been fun (fresher) for a relatively high gravity dark saison with lots of spicy character from ommegang yeast.

750ml bottle. Has floaties in it, so right off the bat makes me wonder how this could be top 50. Maybe a pinch oxidized...some green apple, but more honey. I guess it is the candi sugar, at least from the description, but I really get a honey malt tone. Some orange as well. Soft on the palate, drinkable. Good, but not really in the top tier.

Ommegang Rosetta
Poured from 330c bottle into tulip glass Pours a dark reddish brown with a thin off white head that dissipates quickly. Persistent lacing Aroma - Funky yeast, sour notes, tons of cherries, oak, plums Taste - mild sourness as per the style, mild sweetness, cherries (obviously), mild to moderate funkiness, a medley of fruit flavors, a touch of bitterness on the end, sour fruits stay in the mouth Body - Light, refreshing, and effervescent Overall - Great take on the style. The cherries contribute heavily to the aroma, but aren’t overpowering in flavor. The refreshing and mildly sour qualities are very similar to rodenbach, but cherries give the beer a bit more depth. A must try for any fan of Flemish reds

12oz bottle into a La Chouffe stemmed tulip glass (just to make it feel at home): 13th Jan 2018 at my daughters in California. Cloudy dull orange body, white foam blanket on top, carbonation trails can be clearly seen rising through the misty brew replenishing the head from below. Yeasty, fruity nose, taste also yeasty and fruity, semi-sweet maltiness balances the hop mini-bitterness and fruit notes, good alcoholic bite to each fruity sip. Dangerously drinkable. Best beer of 2018 so far (yes, I know it's only the 13th Jan, but this is seriously good).

Bottle. Light to moderate grain for the malt, moderate perfume and pine for the hops, light soap for the yeast, with passion fruit in the background. Head is large, frothy, white, with fair lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is murky light yellow, with some bits and pieces on the bottom. Flavor starts moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and slightly bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a fizzy carbonation. A little tart for a Belgian Wit, but the mix of flavors is a hit.

12/1/2016 -- from notes: 12oz bottle, from Dutch's. Darker red color, with a bigger airy light tan head that dissipates to a creamy layer. Stronger, softer carbonation, mild slick texture. Medium to bigger body. Up front, tastes more like a dubbel than a doppel, with a dark fruity, spicy, caramel candy flavors. Mild toasty. Moderate-plus sweet taste, mildly cloying. Lighter bitter. Ok doppelbock. Sort of leathery, wet tobacco.

Ommegang Smoked Porter
Bottle (Sep 19, 2017 bottling). Head is initially average sized, frothy/creamy, brown, mostly lasting. Body is black (non-opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, caramel, roasted nuts), with notes of tobacco, vanilla. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, lightly alcoholic. I honestly can't tell there's any smoked malt at all in this...really sad that they completely wimped out in that regard. Maybe it offered more aromatic smoke when it was super fresh, but if so it really disappeared quickly. The aroma is still nice enough, albeit a bit simple and one-dimensional. It's too sweet in the mouth to drink much, but if you blend in something like Stillwater Micro (or anything in that ballpark), it improves quite a lot (brightens the nose and adds much-needed bitterness).
