Iwate Kura Kaki No Stout (Oyster Stout)
Headless pint in a craft beer store right under the JR station in Niigata. It’s not the first time I get headless pints in a craft beer store in Japan. Funny. But this is an excellent beer. Black, with dark brown edges, it looks oily and it would have a nice aroma of roasted malts if it hadn’t been served too cold. Sweet and bitter flavours of roasted malts and a salty character too. Full bodied, I love oyster stouts. I would have enjoyed more if I had tried this one before having had 7 shots of sake at the Cocolo store upstairs.

Iwate Kura Hoya Ale
Appearance: Pours a creamy gold body, topped with an ivory white head. Nose: Aroma is piercing. Bright herbal notes with subtle musk. Taste: Starts off creamy butter, with a soft blanketing herbal bitterness, straw or hay notes. Finish is bright grass, citrus. Mouthfeel: Starts off creamy, and biting tartness. Carbonation that feels like fireworks. Overall: This is a very refreshing beer. Crisp bite on the finish makes this great for pairing. Recommended pairings: Chilean Sea Bass, Sausage and Sauerkraut, Traditional Hamburger.

A very nice stout. Chocolate, but not too sweet. Dry dark bready molasses finish. Could be my imagination, but had a vague seawater sensation at the end. Tried at the 135 Tavern in Tokyo in 2017.

Iwate Kura Kin Kura Pilsner
Pours a clear carbonated yellow with a full white head. The aroma is pretty simple, with honey, lemon, and floral hops. The taste gets more complex. I find grassy hops and cereal, grain, bread, and lemon. I do notice a bit of a metallic flavor in here. At the end, there is a short aftertaste of grainy lemon. Its light in body, with a thin texture, and has an average amount of carbonation. Overall, I think this one is rather dull.

Bottle in Kansai, as well as draft at festivals. A golden brew that while fairly clear has an earthy vegetal sansho character which gives it a not so palatable bitter flavor. I remember having this a few times and coming away more disappointed than impressed...

Iwate Kura Pumpkin Ale (2016~)
Iwate Kura Pumpkin Ale 5%

A cloudy gold with a thick foamy head and an on point pumpkin ale aroma: allspice, cinnamon possibly mace and nutmeg as well as pumpkin flesh. Medium bodied and raspy but smooth. The malts give soda bread while it’s deftly spiced with pumpkin. Much much better than I’ve ever had it in bottles or in previous years.

They hit the right balance of pumpkin and spice, I’d prefer a tiny amount more maltiness but that’s a quibble. Not a hop Bomb but I get spice AND pumpkin and in my book that’s what I want. As it warms up the malts come through with a dark rye bread like character.

If you see this on tap, try it and tell me if I’m imagining things but I’d say at the moment this is probably the best local pumpkin beer in Japan.

Iwate Kura Weizen

330ml bottle bought at LY Drinks & Bites’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during HKTDC Food Expo 2016.

Cloudy hazy golden colour with a rhin ring of dirt-like yeast sedimentsOne finger head with crumpety white foam which last for 2 minutes; Fair sticky lacing with active slight carbonation; Very fragment aroma of moderate malt, with strong wheat, very strong tartness, strong banana, vanilla, grapes, floral, sugar, strong cloves, spices, strong yeast, lemon and very light grass; Mid to light sweet taste of moderate malt, with strong wheat, fair tartness, banana, floral, light molasses, light phenolic, light cloves, wood, bread, yeast, lemon and mid to bitter hops and grass; Close to light body. Thin but quite slick palate; Mouth feel is fair maltyness in a thin but slightly creamy background. Strong wheatyness with fair tartness. Banana ester with floral. Light sweet with fairly clovey phenolic. Notable lemony hops to round. Not bad… Hoppiness is floral, lemon and very light grass in nose, and same in taste but stronger; Bitterness is notable for an abrupt, mid to light astringent wheaty finish; Fairly dry after taste. Smooth and fairly bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one has strong creamy banana, slightly creamy taste with better than average hoppiness, but the body is weak. The brewer did the homework but somehow it’s still steps away to be impressive. Feels like a drinkable macro weiss at a premium craft brew price. Not worth the money.

Iwate Kura Takata no Yume
Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a hazy, lemon juice pale yellow. Lemon, yuzu and faint ginger notes on the nose. Pillowy, soft mouthfeel with lowish carbonation. Like a sports drink in some ways texture-wise. Some scratchy graininess and lots of lemon on the palate with some faint ginger as it warms. Grainy with a lingering soft tartness. I’m digging this.

Iwate Kura Takata no Yume
Pours white and hazy, not that much foam. Reading the name, it sounds like "yume" could be derived from two words: "yuzu" and "ume" (that was before I did some research and found out that Takata no Yume is basically a rice brand - that has been used in this brew). Anyhow, I could get some strong yuzu in the nose and when drinking it, the body was quite soft and pillowy, sort of reminding me ume plums. Surprisingly good, fresh and fragrant fruity rice ale - that actually has yuzu in it as well, so my initial guess about the name wasn’t that wrong. If you asked what I’d like to drink in Japanese summer, then I would answer "something like this"

Iwate Kura Japanese Herb Ale Sansho

330ml bottle bought at LY Drinks & Bites’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during HKTDC Food Expo 2016.

Cloudy hazy straw golden colour with a cloud of sediments; One-quarter finger head with soapy white foam which fades in 20 seconds; Good sticky lacing and slight carbonation; Fragrant aroma of Ale malt, with perfume, tangerine, ginger, grapefruit flesh and soda, peppercorn, floral, sugar, spices and light biscuits; Mid to light sweet taste of light Ale malt, with fair peppercorn, light grapefruits, floral, light sugar, spices, light herbs, biscuits, light lemon, light bitter hops and grass; Light body. Thin palate; Mouth Feel is fair to light Ale maltyness in a watery background. Sodaish grapefruits with a touch of peppercorn. Fruity sweet, spicy and herbal. Light lemon to round. Pretty good!... Hoppiness is perfume, tangerine, grapefruit, floral and spices in nose. Light grapefruits, floral, spices, herbs, lemon and grass in taste; Bitterness is light for an abrupt, low-fi astringent spicy finish; fairly dry after taste. Peppery and quite easy to mouth.

Comments: A light Ale with sansho replacing much of hops, this one peppery character is subtle, rather the perfumey and herbal citrus characters dominate. Easy to enjoy, but I wish there’s more sansho to spice it up just like Kagua Rouge. Drinkable.

Iwate Kura Nagisa

330ml bottle bought at LY Drinks & Bites’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during HKTDC Food Expo 2016.

Looks: Translucent dark amber honey colour with a thin crust of yeast sediments; One finger head with crumpety off-white foam which last for 3 minutes; Excellent sticky lacing and actve carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant Ale malt, with strong funk, strong spice, mango, dark fruits, vanilla, caramel, floral, sugar, alcohol, dry biscuits, strong yeast, light lemon and strong fresh grass.

Taste: Mid to light sweet Ale malt, with moderate fruity sourness, red fruits, caramel, floral, light molasses, light funk, spices, biscuits, strong yeast, lemon, moderate bitter hops and grass.

Body: Medium body. Dry, slick and creamy palate.

Mouth Feel: Good red Ale maltyness in a thick and smooth background. The Hamayuri yeast is a bit Brett-like, with obvious sour fruits, spices and light funk compliments the malt’s caramel and red fruits. Subdued sweetness, Dry biscuity with lemon to round. Pretty neat!

Hoppiness: Floral, light lemon and strong fresh grass in nose, same in taste but stronger. Bitterness is moderate to strong for a lasting, medium astringent sour fruit-grassy finish.

After Taste: Dry. Spicey and fruity to mouth.

Comments: This one has perhaps the lightest touch among sour Ales, but no less interesting - great looks, nice fruity and funky Belgian aroma, moderate sour and spicy taste. Pretty neat to enjoy, although I would like its funkyness and sourness can up a level. Decent!

On tap at OBF 2016. I have no idea if this is the regular or the Sansho IPA. It is only listed as Herb Ale Sansho. Pours a copper color with a medium white head. A big spicy nose, the peppercorn like herb is pretty big. The flavor is lemongrass, big but not distracting Sansho, dry malty base. Solid.

Iwate Kura Kaki No Stout (Oyster Stout)
Pours opaque chocolate brown with a thick, though not long-lasting, tan head. Aroma offers chocolate, roast malt, coffee, molasses, and subtle oyster tones. Flavor takes the oyster and chocolate up a notch for a bold and enjoyable stout. Mouthfeel features firm, thick body if not a lot of fizz. Worth 8.00 for 330 ml? Maybe a wee bit overpriced (How do you say that in Japanese? My dad would probably know.) but still enjoyable.

Poured golden, maybe a bit hazy. Aroma was quite strong sansho, herbal and spicy, a bit of citrus. Taste is quite similar, mainly herbal and spices are dominating. Body itself is in the background and not really that interesting. I had a baked bread with pesto paste with that beer and that paired wonderfully, herbal characters from the beer and from the snack blended really nicely and taste was elevated a lot. Otherwise more like a curiosity, could drink one pint but maybe not that motivated to have several.

Pours amber, kind of hazy. Does not come with much of foam, just a bit, some lacings there as well. Aroma is mainly sweet, fruity and some custard cake with yuzu and pears. Taste is quite similarly sweet, custard, yuzu, pears and persimmons, bitterness there in the background, not really for balancing the beer - but making it definitely one notch better and more drinkable. Reminds me Hitachino Nest’s Nipponia, similar style and actually quite similar feel to the finished product.
