Renaissance Abundance Baltic Cherry Porter
Very deep brown body with a tan head that sticks to the glass. Malty, sweet and strong aroma of coffee and quite dark roasted malt, but this doesn’t make the beer feel dry, since there is also a distinct sweet fruitiness present, without me being able to pinpoint the cherries. Also some dark caramel. Strong flavour of dark roasted malt, dark caramel, chocolate and slightly sour berries, and coffee in the back. Moderate sweet, very lightly acidic and light bitter taste. Close to full body, creamy and smooth texture, soft carbonation. A nice one, but why so gentle on the cherries?

33cl bottle. Semi-hazy amber pour with a thin off-white head. Notes of caramel, light resinous hops, orange zest, subtle overripe tropical fruit, dank hops. Medium body, oily, soft carbonation and long hoppy finish. A well-made IPA, it feels a bit traditional, but it’s something I’d enjoy drinking regularly.

Renaissance Discovery American Pale Ale
33 cl, bottle conditioned, BB March 2017. Some chill-haze, otherwise clear golden amber, medium beige head, lively carbonation. Aroma is malty with ageing tropical fruit hop notes. Mouthfeel is smooth, medium and oily, nice carbonation. Flavourwise I’m not sure. It reminds me of some others IPAs I’ve had, with too long shelf life behind it. It lacks the freshness expected in an IPA, this one is possibly 9 months old by now. Mehh...

Okay. I’ve tried loads of ’so called’ Chocolate Stouts. This is probably one of the best. Pours deep black with gorgeous creamy brown head. Scent of, well, chocolate. Taste is to die for. Soft sweetness of malts and lactose, but never overpowering. Big malts balanced by sweetness, delicious chocolate flavours (think a rich hot chocolate with whipped cream on top) and a smooth mouthfeel. Gorgeous, delicous and so, so drinkable. Well done guys, really impressed. This is the real thing and only at 4.9% it’s even more remarkable.
