Renaissance Enlightenment Series Bloody RIPA
500 ml. with an industrial time stamp that points to possibly having been bottled in 2015. Good thing for Shelton Brothers that I typically like faded hops in the bigger abv beers; their business model seems to be procuring the out-of-date stock from around the world and importing into the US. Wonder if they’re business associates of our President? Anyway this is pretty good stuff that pours a deep copper with a bit of a red tint. Spongy disc of foam lasts a while. Rich aroma of earthy toffee, fresh baked bread with some spicy rye grains scattered throughout. Some notes of orange zest and cherries as well. Flavor has earthy toffee, orange zest, cherry, cocoa, dank herb, sea salt, toasted nut and a long bitter finish of wooden hops and a bit of peppery rye. Kind of a lighter barley wine with rye and I like it. Medium bodied with a smooth, low fizz level and a dangerously drinkable balance.

Bottle picked up in Hackney, can’t find a best-before on it. Pours mostly bright - the yeast in the bottle is properly clingy. Think toasty-sweet marmalade and moderately bitter hops, but with an overlay of berries and maybe lychee. Nice.

Renaissance Enlightenment Series Boom!
030617. Bottle from Brisbane Brewing. This is the first beer that I have had from Renaissance Brewing for quite a while and it is a cracker. Looks great with a vibrant orange colour and a soft white head. Packs a big hop punch when you first sip it and the alcohol is evident from the first sip to the last. Finishes resinous with a strong hoppy aftertaste. Too many of these and you would indeed go boom.

Renaissance Tribute Barley Wine (2012)
330mL bottle from Beer Love online. 2012 vintage Thick pour, presents an opaque murky bronze beer with a small ring of foam eventually forming. Rich malty nose - brown caramel, bread crust, oxidised notes of date & sultana & sherry. It’s thick, really thick! Sticky too, lingering, clingy, almost port-like, warming, feels bigger than it is! Liken the the flavour almost to a white port or Madeira - brown caramel, treacle, honey, dates & sultanas, cooked citrus marmalade, touch of sort of oaky/nutty rancio toward the finish, plenty of booze, bitterness barely gets a look in. A tasty brew, fortifying, substantial, very rich, not as well balanced as I would have hoped.

Renaissance Boonies New Zealand IPA
Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up at Offie & Toffee. Pours clear, deep gold with a frothy, white head. The nose holds ripe, jammy citrus, some piney hops, bready pale malts. Light to medium sweet flavour with more ripe and chewy citrus character, some gummy white grapes, a bit of caramel, oily pine, crusty pale bread, restrained bitterness. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with further suggestions of faded hops, gooey pine, chewy citrus, crackers. The beer is still drinkable and somewhat interesting, but I think Father Time has certainly visited this beer.

So the 5.2 % version is listed as an IPA and the 5.8% is an APA ... Ok ! Bottle at home, split with and thanks to James, 05/05/17. Golden copper with a decent off white head. Nose is pretty basic ...biscuit crumble, caramel, straw, light fruit esters. Taste comprises caramel, light orange peel, toasted bread, grains. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a little dusty hop bitterness. This one of those ’Gateway’ type of beers or wat?

Bottle at home, split with and thanks to James, 05/05/17. Golden blonde with a decent off white head. Nose is old shcool ... caramel, straw, grains, light hop dusting, vague citric notes. Taste comprises caramel malt, orange peel, melon, straw, light bread dough. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with very moderate hop bitterness. So so affair, hop expression is muted and it never really pulls out of 2nd gear.

Bottle from Yamaya. Slightly hazy gold, low head that laces quite well. Aroma of coriander, lemon, wheat and orange peel, which grows and shows more orange down the glass. Renaissance Enlightenment Series Sencha Saison
Pour Is a hazy blonde with a large white head. Aroma is more herbal than estery, that is not a bad thing but it is quite different. I do get the hibiscus and some green herbs. Flavor is A big time green tea and some lemon lime bitterness at the back of the tongue. This beer should probably be classed more in the herb, spice vegetable category than a saison. Still this was quite solid albeit different from your usual saison. Also, I’m a bit leery about getting beers from so far away but this seems to be holding up quite well.
