Ninkasi Ground Control - Bourbon Barrel Aged
Pours a dark brown, with a cream colored head. Aroma of hops, malts, whiskey and wood. Taste is a bit hoppy at first, with wood, whiskey, and malty sweetness to follow. This is a good BA imperial stout, but the hops keep it from being great. Thumbs up.

Wow I paid alot for this 3 years ago and it is wildly average. Pours a completely opaque black with a thin beige head. The nose is licorice heavy, roasty, cocoa, slight vanilla. Slight malty sweetness up front with a big roasted malt punch, bitter but not overpowering. Anise and nutty notes with a rich malt base. Bitterness is underwhelming and the body falls slightly less viscous that I like. Booze is noticable but not heavy. Overall a very average Imperial Stout with a heavy anise flavour profile. Nothing worth $24 CAD.

Ninkasi Helles Belles
Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is light to medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, husks), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), with a light note of soap, hint of DMS. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. A drinkable but fairly simple and forgettable example. Some minor off notes hurt the otherwise pleasant hop bouquet, and the mouth experience is a little flabby and sweet. A tad better than a lot of American examples, but not trying very hard. It's really too bad their far superior Oktoberfest comes but once a year.

On tap at Portland Craft, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out toasted bready notes, some cardboard and metallic notes. Flavour is similar, with bready malt, light sweetness, slight metallic flavour, and some gentle cereal sweetness. Crisp and somewhat harsh. It’s okay.

Bomber. Bright tropical fruit hop aroma with notes of grapefruit citrus and dank pine resiny hops. Pours clear golden with one finger of off white head that has excellent retention and lacing. Starts with juicy tropical fruit hop flavors with a little bit of grapefruit as well. Finishes dry with dank grapefruit and pine resiny hops that linger on the palate. Pretty good stuff.

12 oz single bottle from Roths Sunnyslope Market in S.Salem OR $1.49 Pours a clear deep gold colour with a small tightly bubbled white head. That dissapears fast but leaves nice lace. Aroma is weirdly almost absent..but its more corn and caramel bready malts ..little grass from the hops. Creamy malty and grassy hops make this extremely balanced taste. Smooth and full on the palate. Nice "fest" beer..but more a Helles.

Ninkasi Hop Cooler Citrus IPA
12 oz bottle. Golden color, mostly clear. Almost white head with good retention. Aroma's: light perfumey, actually more peach than citrus, a bit zesty, light citrus and resin. Retronasal it's fruity, sweetish, citrus zesty. Flavor is moderate bitter, moderate sweet. Medium bodied. Long finish, moderate bitter, slightly dry. Perhaps the bottle was not so fresh anymore (I couldn't find a date).

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours a hazy copper golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out toasted biscuity malt and light piney hops. Flavour has a seltzery quality, with toasted biscuity malt and metallic notes. Not sure what they were going for here, but it’s a total flop. Bad.

Bottle. Very light in almost every character. Mellow orange hue with little to no head. It is extremely shallow in mouthfeel, and the flavors, while bright and refreshing, are very subtle. (#6806, 10/24/2017)

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours gold with a white head. Aroma hits with dankish citrus. Med body. Flavor is juicy, suggesting dank citrus, but there's some tropical fruit aspects. So it's not wholly dry, and the bitter is moderate. Yet it is delicious.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (grapefruit). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Boring one-dimensional grapefruity hop aroma, but no flaws. Flavor balance is almost solid...clean bitterness with low acidity, but the sharp sugary sweetness lingers remarkably long into the finish, almost saccharine-like. All in all totally forgettable, so it will be extremely easy to not talk about this IPA.

Ninkasi Sleigh'r Dark Double Alt
From a 12 oz bottle into a Chimay 500th Anniversary chalice. Pours dark brown with brown head and lace. Note: This recently purchased bottle is labeled: "Winter Ale," not Dark Double Alt. The description on the recent website says: "An Alt ferments with Ale yeast at colder lagering temperatures. This effect gives Alts a more refined, crisp lager-like flavor than traditional ales. The Alt has been “Ninkasified” raising the ABV and IBUs. Sleigh'r has a deep, toasted malt flavor that finishes dry and balanced." It also says it's been brewed since 2009 and I'd guess with some modifications each year. The aroma is of dark malts, slight wet tobacco and milk chocolate. Medium carbonation and significant mouthfeel. Flavors of dark malts, milk chocolate, slight burnt caramel, allspice, bitter hops. Overall rich, flavorful, a touch more rough than smooth but tasty.

Ninkasi Oktoberfest (2016-present)
Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with a light note of honey. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation. Of all the American brewers to make a great lager, Ninkasi was a big surprise. Their previous Oktoberfest incarnation (the 5.9% Maerzen) was poor, but this Helles-style Festbier (the sort more common in Germany, which of course throws off a lot of American raters who haven't been to Bavaria) is spot-on...floral/herbal-hoppy and wonderful assertive clean bitterness (a bit more assertive than your average Helles, mind you, almost Pils level) makes it a genuine joy to drink. No bells, no whistles, no unneeded extra alcohol, clean, sharp, bright, and fairly fluffy too. Apparently dry-hopped, but luckily that doesn't ruin it at all. Sure hope they manage to make it this well next year, because dammit there's none of this year's left around here. Wish they made this year-round so I could have a solid clean Helles/Pils to quaff (Helles Belles is sadly not as good).

Draft at PreFunk. Pale, clear golden, scant head. Barely there aroma and taste, faint and light. Doesn't pick up. Ends up like a weak pils, with American hops. Was expecting a bit more.

Ninkasi Beer Run IPA
Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (malt syrup, wort, grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (orange, apricot), with notes of butter, plastic, gummy bears. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter, unclean. Medium to full body, syrupy texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Yikes! Wow, this is in absolutely terrible shape, from start to finish...dirty aroma with very raw malt character, and thick, goopy, and extremely syrupy sweet in the mouth. A highly unpleasant drain pour...undrinkable and almost gag-reflex-inducing.
