Ale Asylum 12 oz. Curl
Blind tasted with 5 other pale lagers. Beers were: 1. Dog Tag Legacy Lager, 2. Amber Harde, 3. Granite City The Northern, 4. Rammer Jammer Beer, 5. Amber Johannes, 6. Ale Asylum 12 oz. Curl. All raters rated them 61 345 TIED 2.

355ml bottle. Pours a light pale gold, lighter than the pale lagers it was against. Aroma is fruity, sweet. Flavor is herbal and brewpubby, drinkable but not a great stylistic example.

Post tasting thoughts:
This was the freshest beer and had lame competition. If this was put up against some pilsners it would have done miserably.

This came off as bland. To out in context the recent other Tripel I’ve had was by Unibroux and it was damn good. The flavors are muted and I agree with another user that it tastes like an "Ale+".

Ale Asylum 12 oz. Curl
Lightly hazed pale yellow liquid. Rather quickly diminished white head. Decent lace. Grains and corn scents. Lightly herbal nose as well, but the corn does distract at first. Lightly sweet with again a mild grainy presence. A touch “perfumy” with mild floral and bit of grape components. Not quite as clean and crisp as I would like. A lager with pilsner aspirations.

Pours copper gold. Brief frothy white head. Resin, citrus nose - and something else I can’t quite put my finger on - vanilla. Flavors - strong pine resin, some grapefruit, some ash, some sweet, Palate has a nice malt structure, and a bit of creaminess, with dry, rye-like finish. Overall, it’s has a lot of things going on, but they somehow don’t coalesce. Perhaps its the use of an individual hops instead of a blend of hops; perhaps I’m getting it late in its shelf cycle.

Keg at the Riverhouse. Described by the bartender as some kind of non-velvety version of Velveteen Rabbit. Clear golden, large foamy white head, good retention. Aroma of mint, earth, pine, pale malt. Taste is pine, mint, earth, sage like notes, pale malt, yeast. Medium bodied. Interesting, quite good.

Ale Asylum Ballistic IPA
Pours a clear, dark golden in color with a medium white head that lasts a pretty long time. An extremely potent amount of citrus is found in the aroma. Lots of grapefruit and orange, heavy pineapple, and mild pine, light floral hops. I was expecting and hoping for a lot more bitterness in this one. In reality, its pretty tame. Big pine and resin in here, with a good amount of caramel, and some orange. It has a milder orange aftertaste. This one is medium in body, with a slightly sticky texture, and has average carbonation. After beginning with plenty of initial promise in the aroma, I find this ends as your run of the mill IPA.

12oz bottle from ck1, thanks bro! Amber orange pour with a bit of a fringy off-white head leaving almost no lace. Aroma has tangerines, or a different -- slightly tangy and slightly off-putting -- citrus fruit. Also there is some pine presence, and a touch of sweet malt. Taste is of sweet fruits, tangy citrus fruits, some sprucy pine and some sweet malts and just a bit of garlic. Medium bodied with little alcohol presence, the blend is solid and the carbonation is fairly constant. Finishes sweetly tangy fruity. Shrug? Not sure what they were doing with this one. It is not as tasty as others. 13.4

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a sturdy red color with a finger’s worth of sly white foamy head. Stringy lace. The aroma started off with some roasted malty nuts. Some toffee/caramel sort of cleanliness hits some bitter citrus to piney hops. The flavor takes the malts and leans them up against the bitter hops, somewhat there and somewhat not. Crisp sort of roasty malts and hop burn in the aftertaste and that hits the finish somewhat dryly. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Mild carbonation. ABV felt appropriate. Overall, even with the hop burn in the aftertaste and finish, I like this one. Seems like mostly everything fits, but also perhaps an amber ale that some may need to get used to.

12 oz. bottle pours a somewhat hazy light amber color with moderate fluffy white head that leaves clumps of lacing. Aroma is mostly floral hops. Taste is slightly bitter with some sweetness in the middle and slight dankness in the aftertaste. Body is light to medium with average carbonation. This is an easily drinkable and refreshing brew which I would enjoy every week if it were priced like gas station beer instead of craft beer.

Relatively thin white head poured from a bottle. Relatively mild aroma of candy and hops. I’d almost call this malt-forward with a definite hop presence but it’s no means overwhelming. It has a nice, gently bitter finish but it’s far away from hop bomb territory. Very good balance. Quite drinkable.

Picked up a 12-oz bottle from Rileys Wines of the World in Madison, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-clear golden light amber colored brew with a creamy off-white head that slowly dissipates and leaves behind some excellent lacing. Aroma of fruity esters, some light banana, tropical fruit and golden grain malt. Taste is medium bodied, flavors of tropical fruit, light clove, a hint of lemon zest and Belgian yeast. Finish is semi-sweet, a little spice detected but disappears quite fast. Overall, a light Belgian ale with some tropical fruit notes.

12oz bottle, $11.99 sixpack. Filtered copper orange body. Creamy, respectable off-white head. Antiquated IIPA that Ale Asylum can’t seem to escape. Piny, burnt hop tones, quite resinous. Vegetal tones. Lots of caramel malt. Really not a beer that I will ever buy again. Drinkable, but completely antiquated and unimpressive. OK...for 2004, not 2017.

Ale Asylum Off Switch
12 ounce bottle from Willy Street Co-Op (West) in Madison, WI, served at cellar temp in a pint glass. Very slightly oily-hazy amber-gold, moderate lasting off-white head...aroma dominated by musty, earthy, notes - a bit of mushroom, dank humus; eventually overripe pineapple and mango appear; it’s a bit reminiscent of some Mosaic-hopped beers but still it’s own distinctive note...body is likewise a bit musty and earthy, only lightly sweet and growing quite dry with strong bitterness throughout, with light peppery alcohol notes growing a bit as it warms...silky-soft mouthfeel, a touch oily/syrupy, low to moderate carbonation. I really like this personally and will be on the lookout for more Skyrocket hops - those not appreciating a pungent, murky flavor and aromatic profile had probably best avoid.

Orange/amber color with a modest, but stable, ecru colored head. A touch of haze. Sweet brown sugar, toasted malt and fresh cedar scents. Mild citric start. A white grapefruit with bit of sugar equivalent. The toasted malt wander about, but don’t mingle with the hops. I’m saying that as a bystander that is racist and bigoted enough to not like darker malts hooking up with green fresh hops (Captain James T. Kirk, she’s still green). Nope, hoppy ambers/blacks are not my thing. I’ll keep trying to adjust.
