Galway Hooker Irish Dark Lager
Sold as Skeff Brew Amber Lager 4.3%. Apparently a badge beer for local Galway pubs. Amber colour. Aroma and flavour have plenty of toasted malts. Not bad.

Pours a clear deep gold colour with a small creamy off white head that settled to a thin layer. A sweet malty aroma, some buttery biscuit. A rich malty taste, again buttery biscuit, creamy in the mouth. A decent hop bitterness.

Aroma is tangerine, mango, sticky brown sugars, grassy, little petrol. Flavour is composed of brown sugars, medium malts, jammy fruits, mango chutney. Palate is semi sweet, sticky, . Harsh grassy bitterness.

Received on tap at Basilico in Oranmore Ireland. Tap lines perhaps not very clean, as the head has a slight metallic smell and a taste of same left on the palate. But the beer flavor itself cuts through and is wonderful. Strong hops but not so dry that it overrides your brain in three seconds. Definitely worth a try, even for €7 a pint.

Tap at The Temple Bar, Dublin. Pours clear gold with a white head. Aroma seems floral. Med body or so. Flavor is floral and ryely malty. This is quite tasty. Reminds of the recent Guinness rye ale. Underrated IMHO.

opaque dark ruby chocolate brown with thin tan head. Quite sharp acidic berries and brown malt on nose. Dusty, earthy. Zippy carbonation and moderate body, slightly sherbetty, sweet, tart, toasty, dry. A little roast barley and cocoa powder, fairly low pH which combined with carbonation makes it a little taxing. Would like more wheat character, more dunkels than weizen but Great to see a trad style attempted.

Tap @ JW Sweetman, Dublin, shared with Niilstrong. Clear golden color, average sized off-white head. Smell and taste malts, some hops, slightly a buttery bitterness, but hops overpower that. Decent body and carbonation. . Nice.

On tap at the Vat house Dublin. Quite disappointing actually as the beer is very low in hop aroma and taste, there is some dough and cara presence and some bitterness that can be harsh at moments although it dissipates quite quickly. Not that well rounded and can be hard to drink a full pint.

Irish Pale Ale? Not really a style is it? Is it possible they just want to use the letters IPA for something that is not remotely an IPA? Even leaving claimed style apart, this is a very ordinary and bland beer, barely above a commercial lager in quality. Far better beers available for the price.

500 ml bottle. BB 28/Jun/18. From my Secret Santa (Beersiveknown). Thanks Steve!
Clear deep mahogany color with no head. Sweetness, malt, hay, dark fruitiness and sugar in a balanced aroma. The flavor is strong dry hoppy bitterness, dry grainy and hay-y malt, sugary sweetness and some mild alcohol. Pretty balanced. No carbonation. The cap was damaged and therefore there was no carbonation in the bottle.

330ml bottle at the Dec 2016 Shrewsbury Beer Exchange Group meeting at Chez Sophie; cheers Mike for this Irish brew. Poured amber bronze, clear and clean looking, wispy off-white head. Malty aroma with a mini citrus ester or two. The taste was of semi-sweet caramel and a hop presence of both citrus and piny flavours: my sweet tooth liked this beer.

330ml bottle from McCambridge’s Of Galway (€2.90):
Quite an interesting offering, it got off to a fairly good start with a nice combination of grapefruit & pine hops alongside plenty of zesty flavours that went down well. There was some nice tropical flavours around the middle & the caramel malts added some sweetness, although this could have perhaps been stronger & as a result the balance of the beer was negatively affected. Overall the beer was a good one that went down quickly easily & I definitely enjoyed it at the time, whether I try it again is another question entirely though.

Bottle from local wholesale distributor, served in 20 cl shaker. Not to be uncharitable, but this neither an IPA or an APA by taste or aroma, but a malt soup without any real hoppiness; without the "IPA" label, I might have taken it for a lager off the bat. You get more character from Carlsberg’s faux-IPA/APA’s.
