Gearys Hampshire Special (HSA) Ale
From Dec 2007 I got this bottle in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John! This pours from 12oz bottle a clear medium gold with a 2 finger head of foam. The smell is very malty and very nice. I also get a fruity nose that makes it a pleasure to sniff. The taste has big caramel malt, dark fruit, some grain, and a surprisingly ample but not overpowering hop presence in the background that adds just the right touch to somewhat balance it out but to tell you the truth, I'm enjoying the hell out of the malt. Nice bit of bready notes here as well and the alcohol is completely hidden, asaic. Lovely drop! It has a fairly thick mouthfeel(yeah!), the carbonation is medium light, and it finishes malty semi sweet. Again...lovely drop! Oh, and the foam hangs around like forever. I'm *really* impressed with this English Strong Ale and I'd seek it out again.

Bottle from the brewery- pours medium copper with little head and no latticing to speak of. Subtle malt aromas but not much more very flat looking with virtually no carbonation. Sour malty bitterness on the tongue with a slight tang on the backside. Very boring.

I think they have their pale ales and lagers backwards...if they switched labels they would get higher ratings...however, it is a light crisp flavor and pleasant ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Not very pale for a pale ale but does not have a harsh linger and better taste towards a European palate. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. The pour is a heady yellow color with decent clarity. There is a bold Graham cracker, white bread sweetness on the nose with a mild earthy hop presence. The mouthfeel is in the medium range with a little acidity. The taste is mainly sweet and bready but it ends pretty clean. I could have another easy.

I didn’t realize Geary’s was marketing a Red Ale until I obtained a bottle at a local tasting. No indication when it was bottled but definitely tasted fresh. In fact, it tasted just as I would assume a solid Red Ale would taste. No complaints at all with this product - if I ever see it in a store, I’ll purchase it as I’d love to consume more than just this one bottle. Don’t know whether it’s distributed outside of Maine but hope such is the case..

Gearys Imperial IPA
Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a golden bronzed copper sort of color with a slim cap of a little white foamy head that quickly fell off. Not much lace. The aroma had some sweet orange marmalade playing with some caramel/toffee backbone and a little bit of bubblegum and sweet dried wood. Grassy to earthy hop bitterness. The flavor wrote the prior mentioned aromas into the taste sweetly and guided fairly nice into the aftertaste and then on into the finish. The palate was about medium bodied with a structured carbonation that felt fine. ABV felt as projected. Overall, good for a DIPA by a brewery that I tend to take for granted sometimes.

From old tasting notes. Winter of 1990/1991 Vintage. Deep Amber orange color. Bubbly beige head. Malty caramel-like aroma with a hint of yeastiness. Big toasted malt flavor upfront. Plenty of hop flavor right through to the finish. Very much like a Pale Ale, but with more oomph! Very good. Well balanced and full bodied.

Easily the most difficult twist offs I have ever encountered. Dark brown color with a dissipating tan head leaving a small amount of lace. Sweet roasted malt, light earth and cocoa. Not much life in the feel. Fairly dry and toasty. The type of brew you could quaff for a long time and not get bored, but also never really be thrilled. 2/13

This IPA poured a medium amber colour with a off white, rocky head. A little lacing. Scents include bread, nail polish and cream. First swig was smooth and a little watery but had really nice flavours of perfume, malt and flowers. Finish was minimally hoppy with those nice malty flavours lingering. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This ale poured a deep amber colour with a tan coloured, foamy hard. Minimal lacing. Scents include ripe fruit, apple cider and a little paint? First swig had rich malty flavours and a slight tinge of that paint flavour that wasn't bad, just different. Finish was medium bitter with those malty flavours lingering. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle into plastic water glass. Dark brown, creamy head. Malty aroma. Medium malt in the mouth, decent hoops. Medium finish. Refreshing, not overly hopped. Solid if nothing terribly special. Reminds me of Newcastle with a bit more hops.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. The pour is a handsome looking reddish amber color with a modest off-white head. Good toasted barley malt and distant chocolate character in the aroma. Earthy hops. Medium body.Same toasted sweetness in the flavor with a short-lasting dry finish. I’m not sure why so many Rate Beerians are panning this beer. I think it is a more than adequate representation of a tradition Red Ale.

Nice looking mahogany colored beer with a medium light tan head. Nose of caramel, plum, and sweet roasted grain. Flavor is less dramatic with a rather sweet caramel core overlaid with some acrid metallic hops. The after taste kills this for me.

From a bottle so certain aspects i have to guesstimate. Very nice malty up front taste with a bit of caramel. The taste does not linger though, it does not overpower you. Could drink this all night.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a dark Amber orange color with a dense creamy beige head. Aroma is of caramel malt and toffee. Rather bold for a summer ale. Flavor brings more caramel/toffee maltiness. A pleasant earthy, spicy hop bitterness balances the sweet malt flavor. Some nuttiness in finish. A complex malty Amber ale unlike most summer ales.

Draft at J's Oyster Bar. Pours copper colored with an inch of brown foam. Leaves trace lacing. Decent malt notes on the nose. Fairly big malt clashes loudly with chunky bitterness on the tongue. Bottle. Sweet brown sugar aroma with earthy hops and nutty accents. Faint citrus and litchi fruit notes. Clear mahogany under a persistent beige blanket. Sweet nutty brown sugar malt flavour up front, then a medium bitterness, along with walnuts, and then a lightly toasty, dry finish. Medium light body, medium carbonation, almost crisp.

6-pack poured into a 2-liter Moxie bottle and snuck into the Portland-Deering Thanksgiving football game in a backpack, then poured into 16 oz solo cups in the bleachers. Extremely foamy pour into the Moxie bottle. Less foam when pouring from the Moxie bottle into the solo cups, but still way more than you would want and each time the cup ended up being like 2/3 head. Toffee, vanilla, caramel, and booze aroma. Smokey creamy taste with a bit of a bite at the finish cause we mixed in some Beam on top of the foam. Not the best taste, but gets you messed up quick, and by like your 3rd one you don’t really care about the taste anyway. Deering sucks!
