Aromas are very malt dominated with subtle flavors of bread, grain and toasted nut. There is a subtle aroma of apple. Hops very subdued. Color is a dark brown with a bit of red. Head is large and light tan in color. Sweetness is light; bitterness is light; there is a fairly distinct tartness, unusual for a brown ale. The body is medium; carbonation is slightly lively. Overall I find the flavors very subtle, too much so; the tartness and apple flavor, suggestive of apple cider vinegar, are unusual and somewhat interesting.

Bottle. Pours dark as night but with little to no vigor. The aroma is rife with rich alcohol and fermented dark fruit. It drinks with a definite boozy, almost medicinal edge. The rich alcohol and cherry-laden burn the up-front notes, like really strong liquid medicine. I like my medicine. (#6698, 7/10/2017)

Gifted bottle! Nose heavy roast and some nice scorched notes, even turning a bit scorched-herbal (e.g., chicory root), lesser brown malt, and a sort of nuttiness -- like home-toasted oats. Pour light brown, dark brown in the glass with lots of tawny and ruby, much more than is usual, and a foamy-airy, large tannish head. Airy but light-medium body, touch watery, low bitterness but all the roast and scorch remains, getting some subtle coffee notes but it’s still more chicory. Wee bit tart to start, subtle sweetness, foam sort of dense with carbohydrates. A little red berry is there, but about as little as can be managed above threshold. Clean but disjointed; it’s a leftovers recipe. [2017.06.30: 3.2]

AleWerks Wetherburn’s Bristol
This is a review of the 2017 Wetherburn’s Tavern Bristol Ale by Williamsburg Alewerks. I’m not sure is I am entering this review under the right beer in the ratebeer database. Aromas is primarily bready malt. Color is a hazy brownish amber; head is medium sized and light tan color. Taste is an interesting combination of sour/tartness with some sweetness. Body is medium; color is oily/creamy; carbonation average. Finish is moderately long with a slight peppery note at the end. On the one hand this is a fairly simple malty ale; however the combination of a fairly pronounced tartness with some sweetness provides some interest.

Bottle, a lovely gift. Date looks like 02 15 2017, but again, smudged. Nose spicy right from crown removal, a strong herbal-spruce character followed by coriander, wheat, faint clove, faint black pepper. Pour rich, cloudy golden with a short, soapy white head. Taste light-medium sweet with low bitterness, clove-and-wheat-slime slickness with sprucey spikes, lemony, prickles of black pepper and a little vegetal (OK, nice rounding) match the very crisp medium-full body; beautiful bready resolution that dominates a long aftertaste. Clean, relatively balanced, and thankfully not coriander soup. Clean, fresh and lively, better-executed than most native Dutch witbiers I’ve tried and should be considered an improvement on the likes of Sammy’s Summer Ale, which I rather looked forward to buying in bulk. AleWerks Toby’s Triple Threads
A very nice gift! Bottled last December by the smudged look of it. Nose strongly roasted without much scorch but still a little unusual (c.f. chicory), some milk chocolate and cocoa tones. Pour medium-brown collecting to pitch with a fizzy tan head. Taste lightly sweet with very low bitterness, no tartness. Richly malty with brown malt and squished red berry, subtle cherry and plum, a hint of smoke, mild tar and nicotine. Medium cola, subtle vanilla. Medium-full body malty but not fat, crisp and refreshing, clean. Textbook and really repeatable. [2017.06.27: 3.7]

22 oz. bottle from Total Wine, Chesapeake, VA (bottled 2017). Dark brown, almost black, pour with a slight khaki head. Aroma of dark chocolate, bourbon, dark fruit, and damp oak. Taste is incredible with rich cocoa, roasted coffee, vanilla, coconut, and whiskey. Moderate alcohol warming but surprisingly lacking in any cherry flavor. A pretty incredible barrel aged imperial stout otherwise.

Appearance: Bright brass. Slightly Hazy. Half a finger of white bubbles. Nose: Citrus zest and tropical fruit. Touch Pine. Lightly sweet. Taste: Big citrus with a decent amount of citrus bitters mid to finish. Very lightly sweet, understated. Body: Lively. Medium. Active carbonation Parting thoughts: Quite a citrus IPA, but one that is well constructed. It’s not an orange candy bomb.

AleWerks Tavern Brown Ale
From notes. Had a pint of this on draft at Calypso’s in Virginia Beach on May 24. Not a bad little spot for a bar next to the hotel. The pour is almost more ruby than brown, but there is a creamy light tan head that fades off slowly leaving a good bit of lace. The aroma is pretty plain, as most browns are. There is a light chocolate, some caramel, a hint of toffee, and that’s about it. Maybe just some sweet malt. The flavor is much of the same. This is almost entirely comprised of chocolate, a hint of toffee, and a sweet, lingering malt on the back end. The mouth feel is surprisingly decent. It’s got a nice medium body to it with a soft carbonation and a lingering sweet, yet light, chocolate and toffee. I’ve had much worse, that’s for sure.

12 oz bottle from Trader Joe’s Short Pump, VA The IPA poured a cloudy amber with white foamy head that slowly dissipated. Nice lacing on the glass. Nice light aroma of oranges from the amarillo hops. The taste was was more driven by the simcoe hops hints of pine and citrus. Nicely balanced IPA. The ale has a medium body with average carbonation. Bitterness fades early, making this an accessible and easy drinking IPA..

Aroma of mild roasted coffee and a bit of bread. Color is a fairly dark brown with a small to moderate sized light brown head. Taste is slightly sweet; not much bitterness. Body is definitely on the light side for a porter; alcohol and carbonation moderate; finish is medium with some sweetness and light roasted coffee. Overall I like the roasted coffee but it’s just too light bodied and somewhat simple.

AleWerks Maizie’s ESB
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a fairly dark copper haze with a thin white colored foamy head that fell off at a decent pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had a nice blend of caramel/toffee malts, light toast, and grassy/earthy hops. Not much bitterness, but a soothing herbal quality also came in fairly nice. The flavor leaned into the malts fairly quick with a decent little aftertaste of those malts. Sly little earthy hop finish. The feel was roughly medium bodied, maybe just a tad under with a decent sessionability about it. ABV felt right despite it being just a tad high for the style. Overall, worthy ESB of having again if I could get it.

AleWerks Chesapeake Pale Ale
Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a semi-cloudy slightly golden to bronze sort of color with a quarter finger’s worth of white foamy head. Mildly dissipated to leave some light stringy lace. The aroma had a faint citrusy sweet pulpiness up front with a little bit of mango strolling underneath. Light malt body. The flavor blended the hops to the malts fairly nice, sweet to bitter and almost coming together. It blended more in the aftertaste and definitely had a sturdy little blended hops to maltiness in the finish. The feel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Good carbonation and the ABV felt fine. Overall, pretty decent APA that I could have again if I could get it.
