Hoppin’ Frog / Dry & Bitter Old School Baltic Porter
Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that was mostly lasting and produced excellent lacing. Moderate toasted malt, spice and alcohol aroma. Medium to abundant body with a dry smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy roasted dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Solid brew and very good for style.

Thanks Jim for the bottle! Poured into a lager glass, the appearance was a ruddy dark amber color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated at a moderate pace. Left some stringy sliding lace. The aroma had some sweet and roasty nuts, dark bread - somewhat sweet, moderate amount of earthiness, light sweet wood, toast, caramel/toffee malts, sweet grains and a little bit of dried leaves. The flavor moderately blended the sweet to the roast with an ample amount of earthiness riding in on the background. Aftertaste was dark breads and grainy sweetness. Light dark bready sweet sort of finish. The palate was medium bodied with a fair sessionably smooth aspect to it. Carbonation and ABV both felt good. Fairly smooth to the tough along my tongue. Overall, really nice doppelbock that I would have again, preferably in the Autumn or early Spring.

The aroma of overripe fruit and a bit of alcohol. The taste is fruity, bitter and overripe fruit. Good bitterness that fills the upper part of the mouth to a weak moment. Good beer should be drunk when it is a bit warmer. Follow me @ Kung av öl @ Facebook for more pictures and ratings.

Bottle from Liquor Express. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Doesn’t leave much lacing. Pleasant roasted coffee notes on the nose. Creamy and smooth on the tongue between the coffee and the roasted malt. Hides it’s booze well. Pretty nice.

Bouteille 33cl.

Hoppin’ Frog BORIS The Crusher
Rich, deep chocolate nose with a boozy backbone. Pours a thick, deep black with a modest brown head and minor lacing. Taste hits all the RIS sweet spots: unsweetened cocoa, dark chocolate, anise, espresso, dried black cherries, rich smoky undertones. Yet the real star is the texture, silky smooth and light despite the formidable 9.4% ABV. Drinks like a dream, even if it grows a tad sweet and boozy as it warms. and the semisweet finish grows clingy and bitter as it fades, a nice balance to the growing chocolate indulgence.

Hoppin’ Frog TORIS The Tyrant: Triple Oatmeal Stout
[Bottle] Pours black with a tiny dark brown head. Aroma is alright--pretty hot, and a lot of anise. Taste is big on chocolate and anise, with a little marshmallow. Alcohol is certainly present, but for a nearly 14% beer it is fairly restrained here. Could use some more hop bitterness to balance it. Very full mouthfeel, but smooth, and has a very long finish of roasted malt. Overall, I was expecting a novelty, over-the-top beer, but this was really good. Reminds me of Expedition, although price per ounce it falls well short, and it is a little less complex. If they lower the price on this, I’ll buy it regularly, but right now it is about three times as much as Expedition and not quite as good as it.

Flavour of licorice, dark chocolate, graininess, grassy bitterness, licorice and dark bread. Medium to full bodied, maybe not as rich as the base beer for some reason. Good stuff anyways.

65 cl bottle @ olio
Aroma is sweet and heavy with cocoa and licorice. Also mild coffee tones. Flavour has cocoa powder, dark chocolate, licorice and mild saltyness that grows stronger towards the finish. Quite close to the original BORIS. Perhaps with a bit lower on drinkability, but then again it’s been a while since I had one.
