Cask hand pull at some dodgy Leicestershirean alehouse with Hatzer and Octo, week 18, 2016. Been on some mission to pick up second hand baba furniture over the border. Marmite and burnt wood with hints of plastic. Jet with a dirty lunar yellow cap- certainly no bitter. Nose burnt raspberry. coal and brimstone sulphur. Thin gruel, 1D. Papery ultimately.

Black Hole Milky Way
Tasted this at the Troon beer festival on the 7th October 2016. Cask, gravity dispense. Pours a clear pale amber in colour with a thin white head. Hint of boiled eggs present in the thin sulphurous aroma. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing throughout. Mixed malts give a digestive biscuit base with hints of gingerbread and golden syrup notes sweet in the mouth. Spicy peppery flavour in addition to the floral hop resins add an extra dimension to the short bitter aftertaste. Finish is malty, spicy and dry with notes of warming mead and ginger evident in the mouth. A decent Wheat beer - just a pity about THAT aroma, was really looking forward to smelling bananas!

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Gold with white head. This proved to be quite a thin, grainy beer with a tinny edge, sharp, a little over strained. Thin in the close. Pretty dull.

Cask at The Duke William, Burslem. A clear golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma of fruity esters, some wheat, slight caramel and subtle lemon. Taste of wheat, some grain, lemon, slight apple, subtle grape, maybe melon, a little fruit and herbal hops. Medium bodied and a slick texture. A long, slightly astrigent, herbal hop bitterness in the finish. A sweet, fruity beer but with a dry, astrigent finish which weirdly kept a sugery sweet taste in my mouth. Ok.

Cask. Aroma of yeast and malt. Pours golden with white top. Taste has soft hop fruits with some acidic citrus notes at the back. Medium bodied with some sugary languor on the palate. I drank it in memory of Victoria Wood whose death has just been announced. She deserved better but you never know. Drink for today.

Handpull cask from the Three Cups, Bedford. Light brown with a thin layer of loose beige head. Malt, turpentine, a bit of wood shavings. Taste is bittersweet, with the intense earthy malt balanced with fruity bitter hop. Medium to long finish. Body a bit thin... pretty good for a basic no-frills bitter.

On cask at Oxon Priory Shrewsbury. Appearance - amber to brown with a decent head. Nose - bran flakes and a hint of citrus if you really look for it. Taste - soggy bran cereal with light honey. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish though not as fresh as the style would lead me to expect. Overall - this is pleasant enough but more like a mild in style.

Cask half-pint in Oakham, Rutland on 15th March 2016. Deep amber body with a weak off-white head. The nose had a caramel lead with a floral hop hint, taste wise it was also sweet caramel with a hop content that tried to calm down the sweetness. Decent brew, suited my sweet tooth.

Cask at The City Hotel, Durham, £3.20/pint. Good-looking mid-amber beer with a smooth, off-white head. The aroma is pretty dry with grassy, grainy character with touches of damp basement and booze too. The taste is grassy and has some sweeter toffee notes too. It’s full of old-fashioned English hop flavours but is pretty dull. A little doughy and stodgy on the palate too.

[Cask, at the Great British Beer Festival, 2015] - Black Hole Brewery Milky Way, 6%, bright yellow, mildly hazy, small frothy head. Pineapple and lactose, faint medical note on the nose. Full body, oily, next to no carbonation. Strong pineapple, lemon and lactose at the start, with a medical note. Stays pretty much the same into the rather weak finish, where the lactose is what remains of the flavour. Almost no noticeable aftertaste. Initially interesting take on a wheat beer (the milky way, indeed!) that peters out halfway through.

Cask (Blue Moon, Cambridge)
Lightish copper, brief head. Rich grainy aroma that hints towards some of the Lithuanian traditional ales. Clear husky and raw barley in both aroma and taste. Nice branny finis, and some nice acidity to the resins too - are you sure there’s no rye here? Palate is watery and, from the bitterness, slightly drying. Has character and can either be sessioned or sipped. Nice one - I like the bran/rye/husks.

True Anglo-Saxon wheat ale with snow white, stable head, creamy as is often the case in beers containing wheat; hazy golden colour. Aroma has some cooked vegetables and sweaty graininess, not too inviting actually, apart from light bready and grassy notes. Light in the mouth, subtle fruitiness, smooth but rather thin body, grainy, with a very mild grassy hoppiness in the finish. Lacks character.
