Aroma: mainly from malts with addition of hops (floral, grass). Golden hazy with minimal head. Medium sweet, light bitterness. Metallic with butter also percteptible. But overall: good, classic lager.

Svaty Florian Tmavý Ležák 11°
Točené v pivovaru: Literally black, loose medium-sized off-white head; sweetish toasty coffeeish nose, some nutty flavours also detectable; mild to moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light bodied, but not watery at all; slightly lingering and drier toasty-caramelly finish with a balancing delicate bitterness. Well crafted example…

Svaty Florian Špekový Ležák 13°
Bottle(as "Tmavý uzený ležák"= "Dark smoked Lager"):Deep amber coloured, stable creamy off-white head, almost solid nose of ( sweet) burnt wood with bitter caramelly and fruity traces; moderate sweet-bitter flavour, smooth and medium bodied; lingering bitter-smoky finish, cookies and caramel as a counterpart. An unexpected gem from Elbogen(Loket), location for "James Bond: Casino Royal"…

on tap at the brewpub. darker than usual for a tmavy, almost black with a cafe latte head; aroma of cocoa and a touch of stewed stonefruit; quite mellow with an easy blend of caramel, chocolate and grassy bitterness. reminds me why it was czech tmavys that really got me into beer back in the ’90s

on tap at the expanded brewpub. very dark brown with an oily brown head; aroma of smoked meats and cocoa; some burnt bitterness, cookies and cream sweetness and a sweaty smoked finish. more of a bamberg rauchbier than any other czech rauchbier i’ve come across; rich and tasty

(tap, listed as Tmavý Special 13°, described as being a špekové pivo and indeed smoked). Very dark brown beer with a big beige and rather creamy head. Aroma is at the same time smoked and lightly buttery. And roasted. Interesting. While other smoked beers initially reminded me of smoked bacon or smoked fish, this one makes me think of polish smoked cheese. But in a good way! Taste is lightly sweet, with light to medium bitterness. Soft carbonation and medium body. Overall very yummy, provided one likes smoked beer and can cope with a buttery touch.

(tap) Amber, hazy, with a creamy head. Aroma of red fruits, toasted malts, alcohol. Light to medium bitterness and sweetness. Medium body, soft to medium carbonation. Slightly sticky and warming. Well made, but according to my taste not enough aroma for its strength. Not my favourite beer by this brewery, anyway.

Svaty Florian Tmavý Ležák 11°
(tap) Dark brown, medium off-white to beige head, slightly hazy. Aroma of coffee, maple-walnut, caramel, toasted. Slightly buttery. Light bitterness, no sweetness. Light body, medium carbonation. Although this beer is not very complex, I am really impressed. I love to get the coffee-caramel-nutty aroma (without traces of licorice or pumpernickel) in a rather light, quaffable and not too sweet beer.

(tap, unfiltered) Bright yellow, hazy, white unstable head. Aroma is spicy/peppery and yeasty with herbal hops/hay and a touch of cereals. Appropriate light to medium bitterness, no sweetness. Medium carbonation, dry finish, lingering hoppy aftertaste. I like its spiciness, and I do not miss the otherwise widespread buttery aroma of Czech Pilsners. Nice!

on tap at the freshly renovated brewery in loket. was just expecting to grab a couple of polotmavys with lunch there and found they had 4 new beers and no polotmavy. the svetly was a textbook example of the style - straw coloured with loads of lacing and a lingering head; aroma a balance of wet metallic, freshly mown grass and white pepper; a fair old whack of bitterness with a touch of golden syrup sweetness lingering

Svaty Florian Polotmavé 11°
Draught at the brewpub in Autumn, 2009: Apricot with a golden sheen. Staggering nose of pound cake, nuts, toasted straw, fresh bread, biscuity malt and an appetizing whiff of peppery and grassy hops. Firm and snug carbonation. Remarkably clean and rich with an utterly divine display of malt purity ranging from sweet bread and pound cake to cookie and nuts. Staunch mineralic clasp magnifies the already amazingly polished nature. Hops flourish in the background as the profoundly intricate malt medley continues to elegantly grace the palate. Minerals continually scrub the tongue while the resoundingly deep pillow-soft malt glides over with a sublimely textured dextrinous caress. Dab of kettle caramelization gorgeously bolsters the already sturdy bready malt core. Closes malt-driven with a dazzling array of cookie and biscuit alongside echoes of hay and characterful yeast. The water quality here is truly divine, and this is easily some of the cleanest malt I’ve ever encountered. Exemplary balance, to boot. A very special Vienna lager.

draft at the Svaty Florian in Loket. caramel brown and clear with a dense, long-lasting, fine-bubbled off-white head. rich and aromatic munich-type maltiness with a bounty of freshly toasted bread, biscuits, sweet toffee and caramel and nutty accents of almond and amaretto. dense, frothy and full carbonation with amazingly malt heft. touches of spices and dried gras noble hops and a distinct apple cake finish make this one dance. superbly soft and creamy malt throughout. just lovely. four years later and this remains the best polotmavy I’ve ever had.

Back from a Czech Republic pub-crawl this is part of my express ratings for the “typical” Světlý 11°- (Czech light Pils), Světlý 12°+ (Czech Pils), Polotmavý (Czech Amber Lagers) and Tmavý (Czech Black Lagers). Non-typical beers will receive personalized descriptions after the express ratings.
----------------------------------------------------------------
How: Tap at brewpub (Minipivovar Loket, Loket, Czech Republic)
The look: Dark amber body with a large creamy beige head
To me a typical Czech Polotmavé (Czech Amber Lagers) is: Hay and biscuit wrapped in caramel. Very light fruity notes with no specific fruits giving the impression of slightly fruity caramel. Moderately sweet. Sweetness is well balanced by dry grassy hops. Body is smooth. Medium carbonation.
This one: As above but a bit more roasted and more dry grassy hops than average. A superior Polotmavé.

My Bottom Line:
Delicate caramel maltiness envelops the herbal, grassy hops of this full-bodied yet quenching Polotmavé Lezak.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-The usual mountain of foam rises atop the hazy dark amber.
-The malt and hop tandem build lightly earthy notes.
-The aroma ably announces what is to come in the flavor profile.
-A marvelous equilibrium reigns throughout; all flavors work as one.

On tap at the brewpub.

on tap at the hotel ferdinand in loket. the only beer they seemed to have and we were the only customers they seemed to have. quite a healthy shade of amber with a light haze suggesting it was unfiltered. loads of lacing from the everlasting head. nutshell aroma with traces of caramel. reasonably sweet and toffeed with some roasted hay character and a lightly bitter finish. not exactly mind-blowing but a pretty good afternoon beer to have only a block or 2 from the amazing loket castle
