Carlow O’Hara’s 51st State IPA
Pours deep misty orange, with a small creamy off-white cap, good retention. Mushy orchard fruit on the nose, overripe citrus (pomelo, tangerine), wet grass, yeast, rotten mango, crushed chives. The taste is really fruity, with a lot of mushy apricot, peach, some apple jam and some tropical fruit syrup. Hints of melon, persimmon, tangerine, then it gets herbal with some vague resin, some lemongrass, crushed flower petals. Low bitterness in the finish, but there’s a hint of fresh tobacco around. Aftertaste is nice, slightly grainy, kinda sweet, but still generically sweet. Medium, fluffy body, smooth, low carbonation. It’s nice that such a traditional brewery tried to jump on the NE bandwaggon, but it’s definitely not on par with the US heavies. But a really pleasant fruity, mellow IPA.

Carlow O’Hara’s Double IPA

Carlow O’Hara’s 20th Anniversary Imperial Stout
My birthday beer #1. Pours pitch black, topped with a thin coffee cream head. Intense chocolate aroma, both milk and dark one. Some sherry note, but very gentle. Initially malty sweetness, some quite sharp alcohol warmth, sherry, a bit of burn actually. Roastiness later on with some berry and cherry sweetness that lasts actually. Silky texture, a bit sticky, fuller body. Alcohol is not hidden at all.

Bottle bought in Rome. Yellow/orange with an off-white head. Very earthy, hoppy aroma with light flowery notes. Caramel malt and lots of dirty hops in the flavour. Quite a harsh beer. Not for me.

Carlow O’Hara’s 51st State IPA
Bottle from Spar, Athlone [240517]
Dark amber, off white head
Aroma of herbal hops, little citrus, odd dried herbs like old basil
Taste of soft citrus, not getting passion fruit, apricot or peach at all as it says on the label, maybe a hint of grapefruit, more of a bitter herbal hop I’m not keen on, light caramel malt background, poor flavour
Palate - Medium carb and body, fairly bitter, hint of alcohol. Finish has a bitter herbal hop linger
Overall - I’m not liking the hop flavours in this, certainly not citrus fruits. Not a fan at all. Most of it thrown out.

Aromat: przyjemny i mocny, czekoladowy, sporo kawy i melasy, praliny i kakao. Wygląd: ciemnobrunatne, nieprzejrzyste, jasnobeżowa pianka szybko zanikająca. Smak: bardzo bogaty i zróżnicowany, gorzka czekolada, praliny, likier czekoladowy, słodycz zbalansowana sporą palonością, trochę kawy, kakao i melasy. Bardzo dobry balans, kompozycja i pijalność. Gładkie, aksamitne i kremowe, ani za słodkie, ani za gorzkie. Miałem lekkie odczucie dębiny, mało kwaśnych akcentów i bardzo dobrze. Przyjemny czekoladowy, likierowy i palony posmak w ustach, super tekstura. Wysycenie niewielkie, takie w sam raz, bardzo pijalne, alkohol ukryty, palona goryczka chwilkę zalega.

Butelka. Czarna, nieprzejrzyste. Piana wręcz brązowa, obfita, drobna, mocno zbita, powoli opada do obwódki, ładnie zdobi szkło. W aromacie gorzka czekolada, kakao, kawa i lekka paloność, ledwo wyczuwalny alkohol w tle.

Black coloured beer. 20cl sample. The aroma has chocolate, sweet caramel malts, hint of red fruits. Black coloure dbeer with a nice, brown, medium head. Tyhe taste is moderate sweet with more evolving bitterness towards the finish. There is caramel, laurel, chocolate. Full bodied beer with a sticky mouthfeel. Not really bad, but bit unbalanced and a little too sweet.

Aromat czekoladowo-kawowy, w tle nuty palonego słodu. Smak gorzkiej czekolady, nuty palone i kawowe, potem lekka słodycz mlecznej czekolady. Na finiszu goryczka i rodzynki w likierze. Warka 28.04.2016

Bottle. Jet black in the glass, low beige head. Aroma of slight coffee, cocoa seeds, very slight alcohol in the background - barely perceptible. Taste is somewhat dry, low bitterness; flavors of dark chocolate, roasted burned dark malt, slight cocoa seeds, warming hot alcohol. Medium body, watery-smooth texture, medium to low carbonation. Too much hot alcohol for my taste.

Intense aroma of roasted coffee with notes of cocoa, dark chocolate bar and malty roastiness in the background. Bit of alcohol is noticeable. Deep brown in the glass with creamy beige head. Taste is definitely dry, tough roasty, even sunflower seeds. Finish is bit of herbal from Polish hops with dryness of cocoa beans. Alcohol still remains, but in the long run beer is very solid. Highly drinkable and very creamy.

Originally rated on 12/18/08. An irish red but it had a brown body? a thick tan cap that quickly disappated. Aromas and flavors of sweet malts, caramel, and a light touch of smoke, some hops made a brief apperance. Overall it was o.k., but kinda average.
