Hopworks Urban Double Vision
Bottle in Seattle. Picked up at Belmont Station. Protein thick off-white head, mostly clear amber brown body. Soft, diffuse fruity brown malt nose. Pale english strong, not too much flavor or weight. A thin copper bitterness, buttery brown malt. Minty hop, light bitter character from this. Medium- body. Doesn’t add up particularly well, and rather clean, but tastes fine.

Bomber from Belmont. Pours a clear reddish color with a medium white head. A yeasty fruity and toffee nose. Rich sweet malts, toffee, caramel, a fruity berry bit, some earthy toast. This is a sort of Fullers Vintage clone and it is quite similar, not as sweet and hoppier.

Hopworks Ferocious Citrus IPA
16oz can from Trader Joe in Salem OR $2.49 Slightly hazy orange coloured ale with a large thick and frothy off white head. Aroma a mix of spruce/dank and citrus/papaya hops..a bit of a mish mash but pleasant. Taste more fruity..peach stone, mango, papaya..but with a pine needle finish. Malts weak and biscuity. Mouth feel is rather nice but a bit under carbonated for my tastes. An OK IPA..not the greatest though.

Hopworks Ferocious Citrus IPA
Hazy orange, but far from opaque. Thin white head. Curiously watery at first, but it thickens and fizzes up by the finish. Very fruity from start to finish, with lots of citrus (tangerine, lemon, grapefruit) and tropical fruit notes (pineapple, mango) -- what I like most about this beer. Grapefruit addition is stark, however. It leaves behind a rind-like bitterness, as well as a synthetic-like off-flavor that’s difficult to describe, but hard to ignore. Aftertaste is a bit hot and alcoholic (more than you’d expect for just 6.2%), and it’s also more cloying than I like. Malt flavors are bready and doughy, maybe even a bit oaty, but nothing enough to keep my attention. Overall, I don’t think this is a bad beer, but to be perfectly honest, I think it lacks depth and I’m bored with it just halfway through the 16-oz. can. It also seems to straddle two or three different IPA variants (NE-style IPA, fruit IPA, Northwest and/or West Coast IPA), and it just comes off as awkward. Like when I was 7 and I couldn’t decide what to be for a Halloween, Zoro or a Storm Trooper, so I went with both -- I wore my Zoro mask and cape over my Storm Trooper outfit.

Tap at the Vancouver location. A: Semi-clear dark red, cappuccino head. N: Phenol, toffee, cherry syrup, roast, rye bread, and a bit of bourbon and ok. T: Very sweet, lightly bitter. M: Medium body, touch of alcohol, soft carbonation. O: Quite nice, though it’s a little crazy to me that this used up so many adjuncts and still doesn’t get close to Ayinger. Still, the cherries are a nice touch here.

Hopworks Ace of Spades
Bomber from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Only after purchasing, having become enthusiastic over the fact that my local bottle shop is carefully beginning to venture into American craft, did I read that this was bottled three years ago - way too old for an American style DIPA of course, but anyway. Irregular, moussy, snow white head, retaining well on the edge but quickly dissipating in the middle, over a lightly hazy ’old gold’ coloured beer with warm light orangey tinge, turning to a cloudy, more ochre-hued peach with sediment. Aroma must have faded after all this time but, much to my surprise, still smells relatively ’fresh’, with only a subtle amount of cardboard- and slightly cooked chicken-like oxidation; otherwise this still smells like any decent DIPA: grapefruit peel, cheese crackers (age has something to do with this but it comes out quite pleasant actually), biscuit, dried mango, barbecue spices, fresh wormwood, gin, parsley, pine resin, old dried lemon zest, olive oil, amaro, egg yolk. Clean but lively fruitiness in the onset, hints of starfruit, tangerine, green olive and some light mango, subdued sweetishness with equally subdued sourishness, minerally side notes here and there, softish but adequate carbonation, supple and oily mouthfeel. Hop ’stings’ are noticeable from the start. Biscuity and lightly cookie-like malt body, a tad toasted in the end but very softly so, making room for a wave of uncompromizing, spicy, very pungent hop bitterness, coating the back of the mouth and the throat, grapefruity, piney and tonic water-like, with some of the pine and citrus peel aromas rising up retronasally and a resinous effect clinging to the teeth, before being tied together - rather than interrupted - by an afterglow of gin-like alcohol which carries the dry, miles long, resinous hop bitterness and traces of the biscuity malt ’softness’ downwards. There is no doubt that the bouquet of this beer was a lot more fragrant and lush when it was young so it is unfortunate I stumbled upon this older bottle, but the flavor as such has held up remarkably well; oxidation is there of course, but limitedly so, and the hop bitterness is as vigorous as it must have been in young condition. I think the aroma, obviously the most delicate component of any ’new’ IPA, is the only thing that suffered a bit, but I suspect this bomber has been kept in good conditions and this is still a very enjoyable, bold and exemplary, if not delicious example of the style. Glad I bought it, all things considered.

Hopworks Abominable Winter Ale
On tap @ Henrik. Looks warm and nice this. A cloudy deep peach orange, almost a little copper colored one this with a medium sized fading and islandy lacing off-white head. Like the sweet malty caramelly and almost barley wine strong nose. Red berries, concentrated and sticky. Quite pleasant. It tastes pretty good also this. More punch than the abv would suggest. Almost like a blend between a DIPA and a strong amber. It has a nice oily texture in the mouth and it’s about average on the carbonation. Well hopped for sure, but it’s lost more on the toffee caramelly sticky side. Grassy, some bitter marmalade and traces of red apples. Lots of flavor, really warming and quite good. 17.02.2017

Patagonia Long Root Ale
This beer was designed to showcase Kernza a perennial grain and donates 1% of sales to The Environment. A crystal clear orange gold with a thick light beige head. The aroma has lots of citrusy hops and earthy peppery grain character a bit similar to Rye. Quite full bodied with a raspy carbonation. The initial flavor is big on chewy rustic grains then the hops step in with a bitter punch of citrus zest and it finishes sharp. A bit floral in the finish.

Nice looking beer! A clear orange color with a creamy beige head. Well balanced aroma with pine/citrus hops with undertones of a sweet fruit cocktail. Sweet front and a good bitter follow but has an odd middle, could be the grain i’m unfamiliar with but has a tinge of artificialness to it. Even with the unusual midsection, overall it’s quite drinkable with a good crisp bite.
