3.1
North Island Autumn Pale Ale
Tap at Before 9. Deep amber color, clear. Nose is caramel malt and some grassy hops. Sweet, malty, caramel, peaches, bread. A bit oily. Not much in the way of hops. Nice enough at first but gets cloying and boring. Probably an ale take on an Oktoberfest.

North Island Beer Juicy Ape
Very hazy amber golden color. Frothy white head. Very juicy, dank, nose with lots of red and white gummy bears. Easy drinking, low carbonation, low bitterness, juicy mouth. Could use more carbonation. Dank. Nice stuff without going to the next level. Highly drinkable

North Island Beer Juicy Ape
Tap at Molto. Nose is nice. Orange, mango, pineapple. Big and juicy. Deep golden-orange, cloudy, low thick head. Sweet and juicy, no bitterness. Fruity juice is nice enough but it disappears without a whisper. There is none of the hop spiciness that makes one of these great. Finish dies, otherwise pretty good.

North Island Beer Juicy Ape
Tap at Yellow Ape's 5th Anniversary, 700yen a half-pint. I am pretty sure this is a NE IPA style beer and I found it easily comparable in quality to Kagami-Biraki from Shiga Kogen. Opaque gold with a thick soapy white head and a tropical plus prickly pear aroma. Medium to light bodied and dry. This is a crisp clean beer bursting with flavor. Great!

3.5
North Island IPA
Tap @ CBM Toranomon, New England vs West Coast event. Pours orange with some white foam, quite deep orange actually. Nose has some biscuity malt sweetness but also some prickly hops. Taste reveals quite sweet beer, malty character overall, some grassy bitterness trying to create some balance into the equation. Citric notes come out in the mid-taste but also in the finish. Nothing special but also not too bad.

North Island Haruyoi 2017
Tap at the brewery. Nice Belgian aroma. Bit spicy, yeasty tripel style fruitiness. Taste is good. Malty, light sweetness, candy, candied fruit, berries too, soft and yeasty. Enjoyable and probably not the smack in the face I expected it to be.

North Island White Out (Brewdog Roppongi 3rd Anniversary Beer)
Bottle number 96 from 333 bottles in this batch. Pours hazy, decent foam, dark yellow, a bit dirty haze. Relatively normal weizen nose, little sourish because of the what character, some cloves and spices, strong banana yeast. More hoppy than a normal weizen hough. Taste reveals actually quite liberal use of ups, this really is "India Pale Weizen". Extra spices add to the bitterness, some of it is coming from coriander I think. Green, herbal bitterness, that is turning more rough and pretty dry in the aftertaste. Tongue is feeling many tannins, bitterness remains lingering for some time longer. Interesting take on a traditional German style and I think that also quite successful, just hope I had gotten this bottle while it was a bit fresher.

North Island Spring Imperial Lager
Tap at Gremlin. Surprisingly refreshing for an imperial lager. Bit of citrus, mainly lemon in the aroma and the taste. Some maltiness lingering behind but not interfering too much. Shady like somehow?!? Bit confused.

North Island Citracchi Ace
Tap at Gremlin. Aroma is mainly Citra. Touch of citrus but also that Citra twigginess thing that I always talk about. Taste is nice but maybe lacking in excitement. Not much trace of the Sorachi. But it’s nice enough.

North Island Kamifu 100 Lager
Tap at Yellow Ape, side by side with this year’s ale version. Nice pilsner nose, Cascade hops, citrus, grass. Clear gold with orange and a low, lacy head. Good German lager feel to the flavor, bread / crackers, nice bitterness. A bit watery in the body, but quite nice and quite a bit better than the ale yeast version with the same recipe (3.4).

North Island 3nks
Medium amber color. Big piney and citrus nose with decent malt character. Body feels a bit heavier than 5.7% and is definitely is a bit malt accented, but sufficient hops to balance this beer out. Modest bitter finish. Good

3.9
North Island Black IPA Coriander
Caught this on keg changeover at the brewpub after I’d apparently finished their IPA. Not that different from tehir black coriander ale, but has some additionl bitterness and depth to it. The coriander black is probably nearer a lager - this is definitely a BIPA and one of the best I’ve had.Their brewer is clearly a master brewer.

North Island Coriander White
Draught at brewpub, It’s refreshing and light with hits of spice and curry, but not much depth. Needs more abv to be intersting, as it’s a bit leightweight as it is. Good but not for repeating.

North Island IPA
Hazy amber color. Big big malty backbone with tons of citrus notes and notes of caramel. Bracing bitterness. The hops just linger and linger. Full body, full impact IPA. Reminds me on a PNW IPAs from the 1990s, but really well put together.

North Island Grapefruit IPA
Back after a few years hiatus it seems. Tap at Gremlin. Murky orange and gold with almost no head. Light white grapefruit forward nose with some piney hops. Clean, grapefruit flavor. Alcohol hidden well. Feels a little heavy, but nice and refreshing. Good fruit IPA with a hoppy bitter finish alongside some mild grapefruit pith. This is pretty nice.

North Island Mari-O Bro.
Draught at Burgermania. A bit of an odd name as the caramalt really dominates the maris otter base, sweet caramel all the way with some biscuit notes, not too sweet or cloying on the finish. Still a decent brown ale I guess, may have been even better paired with pulled pork rather than burger.

North Island Hokkaido Komugi Ji-Biru Weizen
Bottle shared in Yoyogi park. Decent wheat character with an earthy feel, maybe not as impressive as their Coriander White for example but good enough I guess. It seems that Japanese wheat is working well these days with local beers, much better than local hops at least.

North Island Dunkel Weizen
Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep brown with a finger of head that lingers throughout. Cacao and salami on the nose. Super light body, almost watery, with average carbonation. Very light banana and smokiness on the palate. Very interesting take on a dunkelweizen. Not enough weizen qualities but the smokiness is an interesting touch. Green banana on the finish.

Tap at Komachi, March 2016: 6/3/6/3/13=3.1. Grassy, lemon nose, dry crackery malt, some caramel. Sweet flavor, caramel, some diacetyl, oranges, grass. Very bitter, even a bit harsh. Not one of their best.

Tap at Yellow ape. Slightly faint Cascade hops, lemon. Sweeter than the lager, honey, biscuits, lemon. A somewhat coffee-like, burnt bitterness. Lager is much nice, but ok.

Tap at Gremlin. Light orange and pine notes on the nose with some malt. Taste is grainy and malt-forward. Some light pine and grapefruit on the palate. Harsh bitter finish. Very simplistic pale ale without much Cascade flavor even though it’s a single hop beer. I’m guessing the Cascade hops grown in Kamifu just weren’t that great to begin with.
