Applewood Farm Dragon’s Blood
June 28, 2013 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs & mabel - my 750ml bottle ... yeah, a big frigging bottle of 20% mead - what could go wrong? Clear, no head. Aroma of tart fruit and lots of alcohol - pretty nice for that; plus, my sinuses cleared out PDQ. Taste follows - sweet, tart, boozy, but oddly balanced - I didn’t have much to say, but I quite liked it (8-). Slick, not much carbonation (is there supposed to be? I’m actually asking...), boozy finish.

Applewood Farm Ella’s Ice
Bottled at Ottawa gathering. Hazy copper colour. Strawberry and apple jam up front. Very sweet with full body and dense, soft mouthfeel. Gentle and rich, but the strawberries mainly add sweetness. Intense, not complex.

Applewood Farm Smoke’in Apple
Sample, thanks to SlovakSniper! Clear bright golden leaving little les on the glass. Aroma is pretty much a standard cryoconcentrated ice cider (bright apples, tropical notes, fresh) but the addition of hints of peppers. Taste is something else though. It starts like an usual ice cider with mouth coating sweetness following by bright apples acidity but quickly the chilies and pepper corns takes all the place. Medium body. Still. A bit oily mouthfeel. Warming/burning chilies finish. It’s unique and it’s fun but I wouldn’t say it’s enjoyable. Balanced is thrown away when chilies kicks in.

Applewood Farm Ella’s Ice
Sample from SlovakSniper, thanks! Almost clear reddish-copper leaving some sticky legs on the glass. The aroma is super jammy with strawberry jam, apple jam and berries/raspberries notes. Taste is sweet but there’s alcohol and light tartness to balance. There’s plenty of strawberry jam, apple jam and apple jelly here again with very mild spiciness and raspberries notes. Medium body. Still. Moderately oily. Jammy finish with a nice alcohol warmth. Moderately mouth coating for an ice cider. It doesn’t feel too artificial (which happen quite often with super jammy forward ice ciders). This one is pretty unique and quite tasty.

Applewood Farm Smoke’in Apple
sample from slovaksniper, thanks patou! as "smoking apple", 2013 vintage. pours very bright gold, red tint, with sticky legs. chewy golden apple sauce; clove, pepper and peppercorn embossed frozen apple, wood, peppery honey, pickled ginger, minerals. flat carbonation, medium body - very oily and thick; sweet and spicy-tingling finish. tingling spiciness is intriguing - quite fun although a bit overdone yet never vegetal - there’s also a lack of balance in this particularly sweet and spicy concoction.

Applewood Farm Ella’s Ice
sample from slovaksniper, thanks patou! pours almost clear bright red-purple with some sticky legs, and perhaps some cork floaters. bright strawberry and apple jam, sweet fluorescent red apple jelly, sticky woodsy fraises des bois sugars - kind of cloying; warming integrated alcohol, few spices. flat carbonation, medium to full body - thick stuff; sweet and almost cloying strawberry lipstick finish. tartness-free which makes it unbalanced - yet vibrant colours and flavours from blend of these field berries with apples. very intriguing fruit ice cider.

Still reddish pour, lots of legs. Jammy raspberry and apple aroma and taste, very light booziness and natural sweetness. Incredibly fruity. I dunno, I’m not a cider person but this was a real treat.

Bottle from the brewery. Clear golden with no head. Good lord this is dangerous - essentially apple juice with completely hidden alcohol. Honey with some apple and a bit of skin, sweet and a bit dry, sulphurous, moderate body and mild carbonation, incredibly smooth.

Applewood Farm Smoke’in Apple
(Sous le nom de «Smokin Apple». Vintage 2013) Un liquide couleur or quoique légèrement foncé.

Bottle: Poured a nice gold color mead/cider. Aroma of light sweet apple pie with nice honey notes and plenty of residual sugar notes. Taste is mix of nice sweet apple pie notes with floral honey notes with just the right amount of residual sugar with no real apparent alcohol notes. Body is full with nice oily texture. This is dangerously good and way too easy to drink.

Bottle from the farm. This is an interesting one for sure. Clear golden pour with nice legs again. Fairly sweet with a nice tang, lots of apple, fair amount of heat that comes on later with some smoke, the finish is more heat then cider, curious to see if the heat mellows at all, but not sure I like it or not it.

[Bottle (750ml)] Pours a clear pale gold with no head. Big aroma is straight-up apples and honey -- that’s pretty much it and it’s quite nice. Only slightly watery flavour -- but just a touch -- is also apples and honey, simple but quite tasty. Average bodied. Really good stuff.

Smooth average bodied palate, soft carbonation. Tasty, hops may have faded a bit waiting for us to get to it. 7/3/7/3/14-15 Can from the winery via Ferris.

Applewood Farm Iced Cider
Deep amber-gold pour. The nose is laden with honey-glazed fruit, soft spice and a bit of acidity. Some light tartness and a bit of cooked fruit character. There’s a little bit of light fruit and some apricot notes as well. Chewy, sweet yet well balanced by tartness. Lovely.

Tall, skinny bottle poured and split at Matt’s. Listed at 12.4% Pours a dark glow red color with no head. Wonderful cherry, strawberry jam aroma. Mixed berry, cherry, and grape flavor all dominates the apple. Finishes slightlybtart, heavy fruit, and lingers forever. First ice cider for me. Excellent experience for sure.

Dark amber and ruby color. Smells immediately of syrupy strawberries. Sweet and very syrupy, but with a good degree of acidity; the strawberry syrup flavor is very strong, and the alcohol is comforting.
Very nice idea, excellent product.

Given to us as a gift from Applewood after we bought a bunch of cases of Mac Meade for our wedding 2.5 years ago. Aged well. Minimal oxidation - noticable but pleasant. 750mL bottle, pours a clear blonde with no head. Nose is very spicy and apple-y, with cinnamon, coriander, nutmeg and who knows what else, along with caramelized apples. Flavour is very spicy and only lightly sweet for a mead, with dry caramel apples, coriander, nutmeg and a little cinnamon, and some honey. Wouldn’t think this would be good on paper, but all the different elements blend wonderfully. Really nice.

Bottle from the winery. Aroma is quite spicy, lots of. Nutmeg, and cardamon, with some cinnamon, reminds me of nutmeg mixed with iced cider. Finish is quite sweet, and the spices dominate to the point where the only thing the apples and honey add is sweetness. Dangerously drinkable for 10%.

Clear and bright, with the slightest hint of yellow. Lovely aroma. Of floral Honey, apples, and pears with some subtle tartness and vinous quality you’d get from a white wine. Body is nice, carb is soft. Finish is quite sweet, but not cloying. Lovely crisp apples and pears round out the intense sweetness. Great stuff.
