Poured into my stange, the appearance was a dark red with shades of dark purple in the center. Quickly dissipating finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. No lacing. The aroma had started with some sweet and tart red and black cherries. Light oak but grows as it warms. Sour level is nice and accompanying without being overly done. The flavor leans to an oaky tannnic dry blend of the sweet and tart cherries. Both black and red pull through nicely. Semi-dry cherry tart then sweet aftertaste forwarding into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionability about it letting the carbonation fair kindly to the body without distracting the sour to tart level hitting my tongue just as it should. Overall, damn nice iambic and would love to have with some cheesecake, if I was able to have again.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a rugged burnt pale yellow to orange color with a nice looking level foamy head that dissipated evenly leaving some foamy rings. The aroma balanced nicely between citrusy and floral hops eventually. But a big bold puckering sour citrus hit me first. Some Belgian sugars do sort the end of it out nicely. The flavor ends up yielding to the Belgian sweet citrus and floral hoppiness. Puckering sour effect still comes back, all blends into the aftertaste but the puckering sour seems to leave in the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionability about it. The "sour" seems to have glided out a lot more. Good carbonation with the hoppiness creating a nice bitterness about it. Overall, nice Belgian pale ale combining bitter hoppiness to the sour. I would have again.

Great example of the sub-style, the abbey tripel. Yeasty and sharp-malted with a very pronounced alcohol burn and slightly hoppy finish, the difference between this and, say, an ISL is the layers of flavor that unravel as it warms up (11.2 oz bottle, Carrefour Exp)

It pours dark brown with a light brown head. The aromas showcase both malts and esters. Chocolate, raisin, and plum are in the forefront with Caramel, vanilla, and bread in the background. The initial flavors reflect the malts of bread and chocolate. These flavors are quickly replaced with the esters of plum, raisins, and dried fruit. There are spices evident throughout the flavoring experience along with the strong presence of alcohol. It has a moderate body with significant alcohol warming. The warming is not hot, but does have a bitter finish. Overall, this is a dark belgian strong that differs in the chocolate presence which is significant. The balance is a bit towards the chocolate, but not so much so that it takes away from the other complex flavors that are blended in throughout the taste experience.

Faible longueur, corps rond. Assez quelconque et quelque peu ecoeurante.

75 cl. Room temperature. Hazy murky brown, small tanned head with slight lacings. Aroma is complex, sweet notes of brown sugar, pear, banana as well as cellar notes of sherry and spices. Taste is balanced sweet and bitter, dark bread, brown sugar, pears, defined hoppy bitter character without being exaggerated, cinnamon, clove and yeasty notes, slight oaky finish. Big body, medium carbo. Excellent.

This is, and remains, one of my absolute favourite beers for the winter months. I can taste caramel, dates, sherry, molasses and a hint of dark malt with an aftertaste that’s intensely sweet but never cloying. Not at all viscous, and with very little head. I had this on tap once and it was absolutely exceptional. Highly recommended.

Dark brown colour with beige head on top. Aroma has banana, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, sweet aroma. Taste is sweet with chocolate and banana, coffee too but the banana is overkill. Dried fruits are there too. Fullish body and medium carbonation. Weird banana note makes me think about weizenbock or something. Coffee makes this at least a bit interesting.

Into a chalice at just on chilled. Looks the goods as far as Belgian Golden Strong’s. Mountainous, steady plume of white rises up and out the glass. Cedes a wicked amount of Belgian lace in its wake. The body of beer a highly charged, deep, pastel gold that’s finely misted. Yeasty, vinous, sweet malt and spiced by booze is the very heated nose. Pear, guava, banana, lemon peel, rock candi and subtle eucalypt come through with a few swift swirls. Taste of lemon and barley cough drops with a warming, fusel finish. The body fills out as it warms otherwise it is effervescent and light chilled. Medicinal but displaying enough supple fruit esters to save it. There is hints of melon, banana and citrus amid powdery malt and a lean bitterness. Not much length bar a light herbal bitterness, even once it warmed. On a sweeter tip but steers itself well away from being cloying. Just boring really. A boozy glass of cordial. (33cL, BBE 03/19, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Brewed under the name "Barista Chocolate Quad", this pours an opaque prune into the glass, with ruby fringes and an initially sudsy head that quickly reduces to no lacing of which to speak. The nose is of baker’s chocolate and huge roasted coffee bean notes. Flavors are similar, of freshly brewed, roasted Arabic coffee, dark esters, semi-sweet chocolates, light lactose and vanilla notes, a heavy malt and grain bill, slight leathery undertones, finishing with a nice bittersweet chocolate espresso. The full body and active carbonation make for a zesty mouthfeel, providing an easy quaff to the palate. Substantial and complex, this makes for an extremely nice aperitif: a Belgian Strong Ale masked as/mistaken for (as commonly could be) an American Imperial Stout. No matter. Very, very nice offering here! Prost!

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a dark rugged brown color with a thin white foamy head that dissipated immediately. Some messy lacing. The aroma starts with some apple cider vinegar, lean sour to sweet with an embracing caramel loved malt. Some green apple fresh tartness flows over the soured malts. The flavor blends the sour to the sweet. Green apple sticky aftertaste leading on into the finish. On the palate, this one sat between a light and a medium on the body. Semi-sessionable sort of mild sour and then sweet sort of funky and then oatiness. Overall, this is a good Flanders Red ale that I could have again, preferably in warmer weather.

Bouteille 33cl, V&B Grenoble.
