Poured into a tulip glass, a tap soda foam levels quickly revealing a deep ruby color. With no visible bubbles, this rouge ale sits like blood solid in the glass. The scent is that of a good old school black cherry soda. A bold thirst quenching juiciness explodes on the taste buds, with a heavy liquor feel. Hints of Spanish brandy and fresh cherry pie. The finish is not as rich as the taste though; I feel this Belgian could’ve considerably benefited from barrel aging, so the sugar content is contrasted by oakiness. An excellent Belgian, I’m surprised by the lukewarm ratings on this one. Cheers Castle VH!

375ml bottle. Pours a clear deep ruby colour with a creamy rose coloured cap. On the nose, acidic notes, cherry candy (Jolly Ranchers), light red wine like notes, and the tiniest bit of yeast. Taste wise, very tart with more of the cherry candy notes, and a faint bit of vanilla that heads into heavier cherry notes with the underlying acidity still present with nothing but sour cherry in the finish.

I located a 750 ml bottle of this on a beer run in H-Town earlier this year. Saved until the right time, this must be it. The cork was a struggle but that’s all right. Into my New Belgium tulip glass it comes out a very dark body with just a hint of red around the edges. The foam is a persistent, finely-bubbled tan. An attractive nose, I detect banana, bubble gum and mango. Finally a sip, hmm, sweeter than I expected. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. Here is dark cherry, chocolate, some malty yeastiness, ripe plum. A great fullness. Lightly bitter with the alcohol hanging around in the background. Truly fine. Donker, I will be back.

Belgian Ale Barista, BBE 03-2021. Musta, niukka mutta viipyvävaahtoinen, hapoton. Tuoksu vienon houkutteleva, makeahko, ei kovin vahva. Maku muistuttaa vanilja-absolut-vodkaa, vahva, vaniljaisan mausteisan polttava, olisi varmasti hyötynyt muutaman vuoden kypsymisestä, tuoreena hivenen raaka viinapommi.

Bottle at Beerdock Leek. Pours a deep ruby colour with a thin pink head. Aroma of black cherry, kirsch, slight red fruits and subtle sourness. Taste of black cherry, kirsch, some syrup, slight dark malts, a hint of sourness and subtle oak/wood. Medium bodied and a sticky texture. A sweet, sticky cherry finish. Lovely and sweet, cherry liquor aroma. Taste is still cherry liquor but more woody and less sour, quite sticky. It’s nice but expecting more from how it began.

2015 vintage, 75cl corked bottle: Pours crystal clear golden orange colored body with a fizzy white head. Aroma is really vinious. Like a medium-dry white wine. Chardonnay. Some yeasty, ethanolic notes. Herbal. Champagne yeast? Taste is vinious as well. Like a white wine fruity bitter/sour taste. Slightly herbal. Grape peel, acidic. It has a warming yeasty alcoholic aftertaste. Semi aggressive carbonation. Fizzy mouthfeel.

Curious Quad, both full of tasty chocolate-covered dates and a big java backbone, yet maintaining enough Belgian yeastiness and dark fruit esters to keep the strong ale elements detectable. Sweet but not overly so, and the date-black cherry-fig backbone plays nicely with the more indulgent cocoa-mocha notes. Feel gives up none of the 11% ABV, and the nose is a decadent mix of chocolate and dried fruit. Tasty.

Aroma: Medium-high cherry aroma, very similar to cherry lollipops. Medium-light marzipan. Acidity is present, but not strong. Appearance: Brilliantly clear, red body with a small, pink head with fair retention. Flavour: Medium-light horse blanket and cherry on the first sip. Acidity is present, but balanced by a sweetness. Medium dry finish, with a lingering cherry lollipop flavour. No hops. Mouthfeel: Light body. Medium carbonation. Overall: The sweetness of the beer is detracting from what I expect from a lambic. This feels almost like a slightly complex alcopop, not a complex lambic. 250 ml bottle, poured. 23F. Fruit Lambic

750ml bottle. Pours clear reddish purple with a fizzy pinkish head. Not surprisingly the aromas and flavors are predominantly raspberry. This is somehow both a little sweet and a little tart, but only a small amount of sour funkiness. Light bodied and very drinkable, if somewhat one-dimensional.

December 24th, 2014 - Kasteel’s Winter ale is marked by its humble label, free from Christmas goblins and Santa butts. It’s a classy selection from the Christmas aisle, and looks the part too, dressed in a deep dark liquid, with a thin, velvety head. Mocha and espresso are the richest veins in the nose, and they’re peppered with a big of nutmeg. The specter of a scotch ale rears its transparent, with some sweetness, but just a whiff. The flavor is tangy and creamy, like the foam from a freshly poured espresso, but boozy. Espresso beans and the bitterness of dark chocolate work in tandem - mostly - and while the balance is a little rough around the edges, the extra carousing lets the beer hold up against my meal for the night: a rich au jus sandwich.

Bottle at Bier Markt. Dark golden yellow with thin white head. Very peculiar peachy, lemon, pineapple, straw flavour, and I could swear I smell the stevia. Smells overly sweet, and it tastes like weird fake peach flavour. Why do breweries put crappy fake sweeteners in their beers? It always ruins them. Odd that they actually make a gueze that is quite good. This has all the elements of a decent gueze, but the excessive stevia screws it all up.

33cl bb2018, BL sampler 2017-V. - Blond, soft malts as if centrifuged banana milk shake and basic vanilla wheat cake. Intimations of apricot and mainly macro supermarket honey although the drinkability is on point to be not a challenge at all. Quite pointless for its 7%, if/while clean. - If the middle of the road were strewn with pilsner malts and sugar, this spent banana peel would be the result.
