Praga Dark Lager
Bottle. 4.8%. Best before 31.08.18. Pours a clear, dark ruby/chestnut brown, with a creamy, light tan head. Great lacing. Malty aroma with a yogurt note. Caramel as it warms, and the yogurt note diminishes a bit. Flavour is malty and somewhat smoked, with a light sugary note. Light yogurt note here as well, though this diminishes as it warms as well. Bitter finish. Caramel malt, lingering smoked, metallic and light ashy notes. Overall pretty decent, and the smoked note is a pleasant surprise. But would have been a bit better without the yogurt notes. 18.11.17.

Rating #1234 på fad på Skjern Hotel . Mørk øl med stort flot skum. Aroma med ristet malt, let chokolade og salt. Smag af salt, hvidpeber og ristet malt. Medium tykkelse. Ok øl med nogle uvante smagsnuancer.

Bottle. Compared with Urquell this is not the best. But it is ok and in the tradition of pilsners of Checkia.

A very pleasant Czech pils. I live in the US and there are hardly any Czech picks here so this was very pleasant to find. It has a great mouthfeel and taste like a like should. Sad to see the low ratings for this beer. Maybe people do not understand this type that it is very subtle and should not be compared with whisky barrel, hop all over the place beer styles.

What a pleasant surprise! With such a generic name, I assumed this was going to suck, just like the Portuguese's Super Bock, which is kind of their national brand. (Stick to port you Portuguese, because clearly beer isn't your thing.) This has quickly become one of my new favorite beers. I don't know why I have been wasting calories on German pilsners when Praga has more mouthfeel and flavor, but then again, I just read that the Germans were simply trying to replicate what the Czechs made first, so I guess it make sense that this one is so good. Honestly, we were only trying this one because my wife is studying for the BJCP and hadn't come across many Czech beers. But I am now hooked, so glad I came across it and can't wait for my next one.

500 ml bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear medium golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of cracker, white bread, light skunk/pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Okay aromas with balanced pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with very poor strength. Not overwhelming on skunky notes, but not much going on otherwise. Flavors of cracker, white bread, lightly toasted biscuit, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread, lightly toasted biscuit, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from bitterness. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and light-moderately body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/clean, bready/grainy, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.7%. Overall this is a good Czech pilsner style. Good robustness and balance of pale malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the mildly bitter/drying finish. Other than the very muted aromas, this was very well made for the style. Clean pils malts and balancing Saaz hops, not overly bitter or drying. Very flavorful for the low ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering. This definitely felt pretty fresh, despite the lack of bottle dating.

Tap at Pivovarsky klub. Med-low cooked vegetables, otherwise a half-way decent Czech macro lager. Moderate body, honeyish malt, moderate bitterness, light grassy herbal hops. Balanced even though flawed. Drinkable.

500ml can from the shop, drunk at home. Pours clear with a short-lasting frothy head and a lot of beading, no lacing. Intense golden amber, almost orange. Hay, grass and bread on the nose. Creamy mouth-feel but the bitterness obliterates any sense of flavour. Overall, a refreshing drop but no match for the better lager-pilsners out there.

Praga Dark Lager
DOB: ?(38110601)

2015 BJCP Category: 3D Czech Dark Lager

AROMA: Plenty of dark malt but no roasty/burnt notes. Some confectionery notes and a touch of cola or nuts. Low spicy Noble hops in the background. Oxidation and light-strike are noticeable, but not distracting. 8/12

APPEARANCE: Clear dark brown hue (17-40 SRM). Moderate tan froth never completely dissipates and leaves trace lacing. 3/3

FLAVOR: Malty sweetness throughout with prominent Maillard products. Notes of milk chocolate, caramel, cola, and bread are present. No roasted or burnt flavors. Low spicy hop flavor and gentle dry bitterness to offer some balance and prevent a cloying palette. Background note of minerals and oxidation are easily overlooked. Slightly sweet aftertaste. 16/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body and carbonation. Very smooth. Not refreshing, but easily quaffable. Highly efficient at only 4.5% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Certainly an admirable example of the style. Though old, this bottle was enjoyable. Probably World Class when fresh. 8/10

TOTAL SCORE: 39/50

Nice foil covered bottle as pictured. Mild cabbage plant aroma. Looks nice pail & bubble in the stang. Ha, the tst of the cheap pale beer of the old country. What shouldwe call this? Baltic pale lager? hehehheh. Decent co2, a tad medicinal. Probably should drink this a little colder.

2015 BJCP Category: 3B Czech Premium Pale Lager

AROMA: Noticeably skunky due to green bottle, though some (or most) of that may be due to Saaz and other Noble hops. Moderately-strong peppery hop aroma along with bready maltiness. Clean fermentation. 9/12

APPEARANCE: Beautiful golden hue (2-5 SRM); brilliant clarity. Moderate white foam mostly dissipates; some lacing. 2/3

FLAVOR: Moderately-strong spicy Noble hop flavor and bitterness immediately. Flavor is peppery and earthy. Fairly rich bready malt presence with noticeable caramel or graham cracker flavor as it finishes. Well-balanced between hops and malts throughout and into the aftertaste. Slight honey/lemon due to oxidation. 17/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-light body and carbonation. Quite smooth and refreshing. Highly drinkable and sessionable at 4.7% ABV. 4/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Not quite as good as some of the World Class examples, but definitely an enjoyable, well-made beer. 8/10
