This month’s story :- Thomas Johnson was a Yorkshireman who migrated to London as an apothecary and botanist. He is considered as ’The Father of British Botany’. In 1633 he hung a large hand of bananas for sale in his Snow Hill shop window. They were the first to be seen in this country, probably coming from Bermuda. How they got here in good condition remains a mystery. During the Civil War, Thomas was conspicuously brave in supporting the King at the Battle of Basing House in 1644 before falling mortally wounded.
