From the German, meaning “March Beer” and dating back to fifteenth century Bavaria. The beer was brewed in late winter and then stored in caves packed with ice blocks cut from nearby ponds. The mouths of the caves were shaded by planting chestnut trees, ensuring the barrels a long, cool maturation through the warm months. These beers were the forerunners of the lagers we enjoy today (“lager” meaning “to store”). Nickel Brook Marzenbier is brewed with a blend of six European malts, and German hops. Dark red in colour, with a rich, yet refined body balanced by hop dryness. Who says they don’t make them like they used to?
