Named after pioneering world traveler, and Chanute, KS native, Osa Johnson, this Foreign-style Stout is characteristic of the kind of beer she may have encountered on her travels. The style originated with the export of Guinness to far-off locales. Guinness brewed their typically low gravity Dry Stout to essentially twice the strength in order to survive the overseas passage to tropical destinations. (Much in the same way that British brewers brewed a higher gravity, more heavily hopped pale ale for travel to India…the birth of the classic India Pale Ale). Brewers in these tropical locales adopted the style and began releasing interpretations of their own. Commercial examples include beers from Sri Lanka, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Trinidad, and Jamaica. The aroma of this interpretation is slightly sweet and fruity, with hints of roasted coffee. The beer starts with an initial malt sweetness and caramel character, but finishes relatively dry, with mellow roasted notes. Medium to full bodied, Osa’s Safari Stout is nevertheless an extremely approachable, balanced, and drinkable beer that would pair well with a variety of foods, including the heavily spiced cuisines of the style’s various origins. Unfiltered and unrefined. O.G. - 15.6/1.062 Hops - 40 IBUs
