From the twisted mind of Tröegs brewer Bruce Tanner comes Scratch #36, a white ale brewed with spices that we’ve dubbed Bruce Wit – since we’re a lot closer to Bruce than we are to Belgium. Scratch #36 has been a work in progress for Bruce. He used to brew this beer style at his old job and couldn’t wait to tackle it again. In addition to traditional ingredients like orange peel and coriander, Bruce has reached farther into the spice rack incorporating black pepper and star anise into the hopback to intensify the flavors.Pouring a cloudy straw color with a foamy white head, Scratch #36 delivers a bevy of citrus and spicy aroma notes with a hint of licorice from the star anise. . The spices are offset by a wheaty dough taste. Black pepper gives this wit a nice bite on the back end, while the Lachouffe yeast gives a cider twang to finish each sip.
