On August 30, 2007, the world of beer lost one of its most beloved and respected family members. Brewed in memory of renowned beer and whiskey writer, Michael Jackson, Memoriale is a traditional British Extra Special Bitter (ESB). Fuller’s Brewery, in London, was Michael’s local, and it’s ESB was his beer of choice. Memoriale is fashioned after Fuller’s famed ESB, featuring an excellent balance of malt and hops, with citrus note from dry hopping. Bitters are in fact, all part of the Pale Ale family, and there are, generally speaking, three distinct categories of bitters. Ordinary, Best and Strong or Special Bitters, are all considered session beers, meaning they are high in flavor and drinkability, and low in alcohol. The point of a session beer is to allow one to consume several pints of something tasty, while still carrying on an intelligent conversation with the lads. Michael suffered from Parkinson’s disease which greatly reduced his output as a writer and his appearances at events. Never was his absence more profoundly felt than at the Great American Beer Fest, held just over a month after his passing. A portion of the proceeds from every pint will be donated to Parkinson’s research.
