To discuss a beer - even with close friends - is to shackle yourself to the clunky strictures of language. A surgeon rarely performs her operations with spoons; footballers don’t wear hiking boots. Beer is a love song and must be sung in person, from beneath a balcony, with flowers in your hand. Drinking must be done heavily, so that language may slip away and facial expressions and bodily noises may take over and tell the full story of our ambrosia.
