Everyone by now knows the historical moorings of IPAs, right?
Hops are a natural preservative. So... when the Brits were conquering the world in the 17th and 18th centuries, brewers added hops to their pale ales for the journey to British troops in India. The result: a new style called India Pale Ale.
Not so fast. It turns out IPA was intended for officers only, thank you. The common man during that era drank porter, because it was cheaper than pale ale. Immensely popular at that time.
It turns out that British breweries made two beers for shipment to India. India Pale Ale for the officers and India Porter for everyone else.
We decided to recreate and celebrate this virtually unknown beer style. That’s the East India part of the name. We started with our porter recipe, then added an insane amount of hops--almost two pounds per barrel. IBUs went from 14 to 67. Yowza.
We also upped the grain bill so that the result wouldn’t be too out of whack. Of course, that ups the ABV from 6% to about 7.5%. That’s the Imperial part of the name.
The Fortune Teller part of the name was to evoke the spiritual and mystical side of India. It’s not all Ouija boards, grasshopper.
We hope you enjoy the complex character of this ale as much as we do. The malt dances on your tongue, then the hops peek out from behind the curtain.
