Brewing more than one beer from a single mash (parti gyle) is still a common practice in britain. A small beer is the lighter and weaker 2nd beer produced from a single mash. The rich first runnings of the wort were used to produce a high gravity "Imperial Brown Ale" that will be tapped later this year. This small beer has some of the roasted malt characteristics of a brown ale, though it is lighter-bodied. We have hopped it exclusively with domestic SAAZER hops to give it a slightly aromatic nose.
