Originally brewed as a cask beer for the Peterborough Beer Festival in 2006; later bottled for sale.
"It’s a dark ale, it’s quite strong by British standards, and the taste is quite aggressive – it’s like espresso compared with instant coffee. It only appeals to confirmed fans of dark beer and is not a huge seller. When we first brewed it, people had ’Marmite moments’ with it. Hawse Buckler takes its name from the plate which fills the hole for a ship’s anchor chain – the hawse-hole – during rough weather.
2008 World Beer Awards: Best strong dark bottled ale and the best dark bottled ale. Second to Tripel Karmeliet for world’s best ale.
