78 If you’re headed to York Minster from the railway station you may pass this pub (or you may wish to come in). I recommend the latter. It has a wonderful, lived-in but cared-for feel, with tiled flooring and It’s a Black Sheep pub, but don’t let that put you off, the beer list is amazing if on the small side. Options such as Rooster, Shiny, Thornbridge and Wild Beer on cask and keg, with some further can/bottle choice in a fridge behind the bar. I’m enjoying the Black Sheep imperial stout before noon (did I mention they open at 11 most days)? Very, very, very good value. Don’t miss it. |
82 Visited 26th Feb 2022 on a two day crawl around York. Characterful trad pub with a friendly welcome on the edge of the city. There were 4 or 5 beers on cask and the same amount on keg, those beers we sampled were in good condition. |
54 Quite busy when we visited so didn't stay long. Something like 4 cask and 4 keg so selection was ok. |
68 Always worth a hit this place |
76 Visited January 2013. |
80 Enjoyed our visit to this 2019 Good Beer Guide pub last month. Popular as ever, with a decent range of ales available. We hose Salt Mondus Novus and Raven Hill Chalk Stream which were fine. |
70 Visited January 2017. A pub that stood out for the friendly welcome from its staff and good value food. Beer range wasn't particularly wide, but there were a couple of new ones for me to try, and they were served in good condition. A good pub. |
72 Scruffy but charming olde worlde pub with friendly staff and a decent selection of beers (don’t be fooled by their website listing which is quite spectacular). Spent a content hour in here working my way through half a dozen beer. I didn’t partake the food but it looked delicious and the portions were immense. One chap ordered ham, egg and chips and received a plate that must have been stacked 5 inches high with what looked like triple fried chips! All in all, a good experience and if I return I would certainly plan lunch here. |
72 Review Sept ’16 reduced to 72. The beers in here this year were just a little tired and samey, still popular but it has lost some of its character. Review Sep ’14 - 82. Just as packed as ever in here, the beer range is ever more adventurous though. Friendly and fun. Review Sep ’13 78. We have visited this great pub a few times now, it is always busy and buzzing, seating being at a premium. There is generally a good range of beers to be had. There is a pleasant outdoor patio to the rear. What it can suffer from is the dreaded Stag and Hen parties at weekends, but there is usually a doorman trying to stop this. A certain must visit on any trip to York even if it has now been overtaken by the York Tap. |
66 A two minute walk from the train station toward town, just to the right of a bridge. Paneled interior - walls, benches and ceiling. Decent enough beer list with both cask and craft. Worth a quick look. |
