Newstead Tower is at the far west end of what might still be considered The Grove neighborhood in St. Louis, at the corner of Manchester and Newstead. The atmosphere is hip and simple, a nice modern renovation of an old corner building. The beer selection isn’t vast but they’re good for Boulevard, Bell’s, Schlafly, and Founders, as well as a few other small locals like Charleville and O’Fallon. There are a handful of bottles, as well, including Orval and a good mix for just a small list. The food here is excellent; I like the burger a lot but it wouldn’t kill them to throw a few more chips on the plate. The real draw for beer people here are the monthly beer dinners; every month for a flat rate they pair courses with 5-6 beers from a single brewer, and some special stuff tends to show up at those. Bell’s, Founders, Goose Island, and many others have all done these in the past year here. Unfortunately, the rumor is that the place might be closing soon.

The beer selection is not bad. Had high hopes for this place, but the food was a huge disappointment. I am hoping it was an off night, maybe will try again after a long wait.

Nice looking room with red painted walls and hard wood floors. Beer selection is decent with about 5 Schlafly taps and 5 Boulevard taps along with a few international beers. Food is where this goes downhill. Only 2 main dishes and they are really small. Fish and chips and a burger. I have never left a resturant and been more hungry after i left than when i went in. They do have a monthly beer dinner which is decent but I cannot recomend this place as the beer is just ok and the food is mini and leaves you wanting more.

4/21/08 - Went back after such a positive visit before. I must admit this time around it wasn’t nearly as enjoyable. The same cheese plate was about half the quality and the live music overwhelmed the room. Service was good, not great and I sorely missed the O’Fallon Smoked Porter on draft. Still not bad. I’ll have to give it another try in a couple months. - 2/23/08 - Went there for the first time this February and had a great time. There was a short wait for a table but had the pleasure of scanning all the top-notch balanced selction of local beers on draft it was great to see them showcase the non-Schlafly selctions! The wait staff was very attentive and knew the menu inside and out (even after just a few months of opening). Had the cheese platter to start and the fish and chips. All very nicely done. I would love to go back.
