| dcschiller (42), Scottsdale, Arizona | | May 24, 2012 Cool little pizza joint that has the best taps in Tucson, if not the entire state. Great mix of styles. Atmosphere is laid back and quiet (went during lunch). Lots of great signs/breweriana feed add to the vibe. Got the pizza lunch special. The slice was really a quarter pizza. Tasty food. A must visit when in Tucson. | | TheRealMGD (54), Lakewood, Washington | | April 2, 2012 Very cool place that I found through RB while I was visiting my parents. Some of the bartenders are very talented homebrewers and are always happy to talk beer if not too busy. Selection is incredibly good and is ALL craft beers. They have always had at least one craft beer on that they’ve NEVER had before - that’s quite a record. Pizza is pretty good, something that this New Haven born pizza and beer snob didn’t expect to find in Tucson. Ambiance is a bit lacking due to the ’commercial store front’ nature of the place, but helped by being near UA. A must-visit for the beer lover who has got lost and found him- or herself in Tucson. | | LilBeerDoctor (185), East Setauket, New York | | January 25, 2012 This is a great bar in Tuscon (I don’t believe it’s a brewpub). The tap list is extensive and contains plenty of rare goodies (especially rare to an east coaster!), largely western breweries. There were so many beers I wanted to try! It is a smallish place, with very few seats at the bars and 2 rooms of small tables. It was pretty busy on a Tuesday night too. They serve some food, but it is a limited menu (pizza and appetizers). Overall, you can’t go wrong here and I view it as a must stop in Tuscon. | | ultrashuai (22), Bloomington, Indiana | | November 16, 2011 This was my spot while living in Tucson. We were in here once a month. I knew the waitresses, and they knew me, and most tolerated my indecisiveness, grilling questions and requests for samples.
The Local Dough name is how my wife and I always referred to it to each other. When I first started coming here years ago, that’s what they were called. Austin ran the place solo and served pizza, sandwiches and a beer-based ice cream. The food was very good, but the beer was better. After a while, the city shut down their food service because of an issue with the floor and, soon enough, they had shut their doors completely.
But they reemerged as 1702 with the always interesting Eric.
The secret to having a good experience here lies in two insights: get the good server and come early. If you come after 5pm, then you will not get a good seat (if you get a good seat at all) and you will not get very good service. For years, Angie and Beth were the two that I would look for. Angie has moved on (Beth may have as well), but I can only hope that they would replace them with servers who knew had just 1/10th the knowledge and skill that those two girls had.
Pizza, beer and occasionally salads. The rest is a very Tucson thing. You’ll find UA grad students, UA professors, the more 4th Avenue arts crowd, hipsters, and the occasional frat/sorority member (the building butts up against a Greek house). There’s wine, but it usually sucks. There is no liquor and there is no happy hour (it was eliminated long ago).
Other tips for coming here: you can park in the adjacent UA lot weekends and weekdays after 5pm; don’t come when there is a UA football or basketball game because that same UA lot is used for game parking and the place is packed; tip well and they’ll remember you. | | DiarmaidBHK (307), Pennsylvania | | October 21, 2011 Located near the Arizona Campus in a strip of other college type stores. There’s a small parking lot connected to the strip. Relaxed vibe with a plethora of metal craft beer signs lining the primary colored walls. They have over 50 taps of local and regional craft. Didn’t find a Cantillon but the locals were solid. They do a massive $5.00 slice of pizza which should be a sufficient meal for most appetites. If I was Arizona I’d put this place in my recruiting materials. | | CaraCurtis (10), | | September 3, 2011 I have been to this place once. It was a quick stop by going through Tucson. I was excited to see this place and was happy to find a great beer bar to stop at. I have definite plans to make another visit. We bought a bottle of parabola and had cantillon on tap. The tap selection was impressive. | | kylefleeger (13), Tempe, Arizona | | September 3, 2011 The first time I was there the bartender was extremely rude because she wanted to get off work, the most recent, the bartender was very engaged and helpful. The beer fridge was packed with rare beer that has been sold out in phoenix for weeks. For example Firestone parabola. They also had cantillon bottles which have become very rare in phoenix. The pizza is great. Definitely the best place in tuscon by a lot. | | GlenVargas (14), Arizona | | June 18, 2011 [ Updated January 16, 2012 ] 1702 is kind of smack dab in the middle of D.B. central (what with the U of A right next door), but the number of taps and solid ’za make it too good to pass up. The place is sort of awkwardly arranged with a tiny bar shoved off to the right side of the restaurant with seats facing a TV that’s a little too close so you have to look up and that you can’t hear anyway. The taps are plentiful, but three different selections I wanted to try had dried up. And, as a final criticism: the waitresses were helpful but pretty annoying. Other than all those probs, this place has the basics down: quality selections on tap, tasty foodies, and some cool beer/brewery-related promotional decor. | | fata2683 (125), Tucson, Arizona | | June 17, 2011 Very cool pizza spot right by the campus of U of A with the best tap selection in the city. The prices are nice, I also love that you can order each beer in 3-4 different sizes which is nice for sampling or if you have to drive. The food is really good and 1 slice will fill you up as the portions are large. Plans to start brewing here should make this place the premiere Tucson beer destination. | | Maltajo (34), TARRYTOWN, New York | | May 19, 2011 This place rocks! You hungry for pizza? You better be thirsty also and have a DD. This place is a beer heaven in disguise! Lots of taps and bomber bottles. Great food and great service! Biggest slice of pizza in AZ! |
