| lithy (103), Knoxville, Tennessee | | November 30, 2009 Pretty cool building. They had 13 beers on tap when I went, forgot to ask if they had anything on cask so not sure on that one. Samplers were standard pricing about a dollar per beer. Beer itself was varied some inconsequential, others pretty good, nothing spectacular. Service was nice, did not eat. Pints were expensive outside of happy hours, looked like a band was setting up for Saturday night while I was there. | | Pivoyager (37), Gaithersburg, Maryland | | November 24, 2009 Conveniently located amid the Historic Third Ward District and easily accessible downtown via the Riverwalk, the Milwaukee Ale House is a mandatory stop for any Beer Advocate - at least it has been during my many trips to Irishfest (also nearby). It’s riverside location also makes it a prime target for the tourist-laden Brews Cruises that ply the murky Milwaukee River.
It is a large establishment with a sizeable bar area, a smattering of high tops and tables towards the river side; of course, Milwaukee Ale House offers a waterfront patio, a prime location. Of course, for me, the bar is good enough.
There are several year round beers and a few seasonals, the former includes their Juneau Ale, Louie’s Demise Ale, Pull Chain IPA and a stout, a creamy and delicious elixir whose name escapes me. But it was tasty.
In addition, the thirsty BA can indulge in an eclectic menu filled with a variety of filling entrees, soup and sandwiches. (For lunch, I enjoyed a tender roast beef on baguette with a hearty dollop of potato salad on the side; all of it being delish.) The bartender was efficient and knowledgeable as to the aforementioned beers. None of this, "It’s the closest thing we have to Budweiser" here. Always an inviting touch.
In a city dominated by Miller Brewing, and haunted by the lonely ghosts of Blatz and Schlitz, the Milwaukee Ale House serves as a haven to anyone in search of quality beer. I recommend it during any trip to Cream City.
| | esjaygee (105), Oak Creek, Wisconsin | | August 21, 2009 This place has a rustic feel to it, with tons of wood décor and a nice location right on the Milwaukee river. They had a decent selection of taps with three seasonal offerings and two cask conditions beers. Since I went on a Thursday it was $2.50 imperial pints all night long and the two I had were both decent. Our waitress was very friendly, though her beer knowledge wasn’t the greatest. I had a Bacon Bleu Cheese burger and an eggplant appetizer and both were excellent. They have lots of free concerts, but the band that was playing on my visit wasn’t my pint of ale and I had to shout over them at times. A drawback, IMO, is that they allow smoking in the bat. Overall, I still enjoyed my time here and will make it a point to come back on a somewhat regular basis. | BenC (5), Wisconsin does not count - explanation | | July 29, 2009 Nice little brewpub in the middle of Milwaukee. The brewing equipment is in a small room up front. I only had one beer, the porter, which was good but a little lacking in character. The bartenders were all very cheerful and helpful. Glad I got to see the place. | | JK (119), Richfield, Minnesota | | July 20, 2009 [ Updated October 3, 2009 ] Nice place in an old building with a view of the river in back. Service was friendly but didn’t seem to know a lot about beer. Moderate prices and ok beer. | | phishpond417 (51), Madison, Wisconsin | | July 19, 2009 The second brewery of the day we all visited. Highly recommended by Singlemalter, and I can see why. The place itself can be easy to miss when zooming by on Water Street, and finding a parking spot can be tricky, but once you’re inside you’ll be glad you came. The beer is great in my opinion, excellent variety of house beers as well as the guests. Didn’t get the chance to try the food, but it smelled great. I’m sure I will be coming back again. | | coharahawk (12), Milwaukee, Wisconsin | | June 17, 2009 I’ve been to MAH several times now over the course of the past six months or so. I really enjoy the location on the river and the atmosphere of the place in general. They have had a good cover band a few of the times I was there. The food and service have been good the two times I have eaten at MAH. Their beers have been hit or miss. I would not go out of my way to try their beer. However, every once in awhile they will produce a pretty solid seasonal. During happy hour they have $2.50 imperial pints; so no complaints there. Not bad if you want to sit on the riverview patio and a enjoy a locally produced beer. | | Ughsmash (138), Waukesha, Wisconsin | | January 8, 2008 I’ve spent many an evening at the Ale House, and I’d consider it time well spent. They have a large area for concerts (and they bring in solid bands), plenty of TVs, and a cool location on the river. The food is usually quite solid, and the beers are servicable (every once in a while really good). All in all a fun place to hang out. | | surlysober (24), Milwaukee, Wisconsin | | January 6, 2008 The Milwaukee Ale House is definitely the best brewpub in Milwaukee, but that doesn’t really say all that much. The beers range from average to slightly above average, and the food and atmosphere is good, but it still leaves you wanting more. There just aren’t enough truly interesting beers to really recommend it, and after being to some of the other brewpubs in the state (the Grumpy Troll and the Great Dane), it’s kind of hard to get excited about this place. | | Strykzone (40), Wood River, Illinois | | July 15, 2007 This is a great place to spend an evening. The building is old style architecture with lots of wood and is located on the Riverwalk. We ate indoors but outside is a great deck with a lot of seating there. Food was good and pretty much what you would expect in Milwaukee. I enjoyed a brat with sourkraut. Service was good and there were plenty of servers on hand. They brew 6 beers on site and all were good. |
