“Visited on a Saturday evening and sat outside. 12 taps running at the time of our visit, perhaps half of them Swiss, and a third of them sours. Flights of four available. Overall quality of the offerings above average, prices too, although not necessarily for Switzerland. Very friendly English-speaking staff.“

“Nice place in central Bern. A few steps from Au Trappiste. They have a downstairs (cellar) area, but also some outside seating. Nice selection of taps. They have quite a few fridges and then had two racks (of uncooled) beers. These were mostly large format bottles and mostly american brews (stouts and sours mainly). We came here rather late, after having drunk quite a few bottles. So we only had a few tasters from tap. I wish we were a bit earlier and were a bit more sober to try some more of their stuff. If you come here, its better to come in a bigger group, so its easier to share the large bottles. Overall very recommended place, one of the must sees in Bern.“

“Smallish beer place in central Bern, easy walking distance from everything interesting. They had lots of outdoor tables in the pedestrian street. Can get busy. 6 taps with half swiss beers and the other of interesting international craft breweries. They have an interesting selection of bottles and cans, mostly sours (lambics), stouts and ipas. Quite a few british breweries (Verdant, Deya, Cloudwater, Kernel, Brew by Numbers). Very friendly service. Cheese plate was very nice with a big and varied selection of Swiss cheeses. Very recommended.“

“Big place just outside the city center of Bern (connected through a bridge). Seems to be a popular spot. We visited early on a hot Saturday afternoon and the place was crowded, especially outside. We had two tap beers (a light oat lager, and a wit), and both beers were surprisingly good. They differentiate between people who eat and those who only drink beer, which makes things a bit complicated. Beers were self service. Very cool location. Overall good place, but I would recommend coming outside of peak times.“

“Restaurant in the old town of Bern in a nice and not overly crowded street close to the partner bar Biercafe Au Trappiste and the bar OnTap. Located in a beautiful old building with rustic appearance inside and the possibility to sit outside under the large arcades and on the street. The beer menu comprises about 50 Belgian beer of all kind of styles from traditional but also newer breweries along approximately 15 bottles from breweries all around the world. Overall a nice selection which is, however, definitely overshadowed by the food, which was simply great. All (or almost all) dishes are made with beer but the beer is not in the focus. Classical (Belgian?) dishes with a modern twist, nicely arranged and of superb taste. Prices are Swiss standard but the value you get is very good. For sure worth a visit not only if you like Belgian beer but also if you are looking for a nice dinner.“

“The Bern version of the Drinks of The World brand can be found (as all of the shops) in the central station of Bern. Kind of supermarket flair with with beers, wines, spirits, Mate teas and all kind of drinks but the beer probably accounts for roughly half of the selection. The beer selection is large (~500+) but not particularly exciting. Larger craft beer brewers which are nowadays often owned by Macro breweries from the US and Europe with some decent but also widely available stuff from Europe mixed in. Traditional large breweries from GB, Ireland, Belgium and Germany - decent stuff but also nothing special. From Switzerland the selection is limited to macro breweries and larger "crafty" brewers with mixed quality with only a few exceptions (BFM, A Tue-Tete). Interesting only for people hunting country ticks (loads of shitty beers from many countries and regions all around the world, which are often hard to access). Worth a look if you happen to be at the central station and have time to spend.“

“A bit outside the citry center but with a tram station in front. The bar is the Brewpub of the Barbiere brewery but it is definitely not just about beer. I have the feeling that most people visit this place not because of the beer but just because the enjoy hanging out here. Most of the time I visited it was pretty full and crowded. Industrial bar with wooden interior and some hipster vibes. They offer beer from 6 taps (1 nitro), sometimes there are 2 two guest beers. Prices are pretty good for Bern and their beers are decent as well. Recommended if you are in Bern.“

“Small bar in the outskirts of Bern run by a cooperative a nanobrewers and seems to be a afterwork meeting place for locals. A bit hidden, the bar is situated in the cellar vault of an old house. The couple running the bar the day I was there was really kind. They only offer bottles. When I was there three of there own brews and about 20 very local beers were available. Prices were really low. The quality of the beers was ok but some were a bit questionable. Interesting place but nothing I would seek unless you are searching for super local stuff.“

“Smallish bar in the old town of Bern. Basically two rooms - one small with a bar and one less small without a bar. Rather minimalist interior, some beer paraphernalia and that's it. Service impersonal, typical for Switzerland. Beer selection quite nice, with some BFM stuff available. Prices certainly ok. Since a draught IPA from a reliable brewery is cheaper than a kebab in Bern, it makes not much sense to eat in this town. Anyway, I don't see what's supposedly special about this place. Been to hundreds better bars. Not that there is anything wrong with Biercafe on the other hand. It's just overrated. But apart from Barbiere it may be the best craft beer spot in Bern anyway.“

“Visited in September 2018. Smallish, cafeteria-like bar. The brewing equipment is out of sight, so I guess this is just the brewery's taproom. Some outside seating, a bit off the old town but worth the trip. Impersonal, typically Swiss service and 8 taps. 6 of their own plus two with beers from Trois Dames. Their beers were mostly very good, with the stouts being superb. Beerwise one of the best taprooms I've been to. Also the best beer place in Bern. Recommended!“

“Visited in September 2018. A huge old building that used to house trams, not far from the brown bear pit in Bern. Nowadays there are no trams. There is brewing equipment on display at the center of the building, surrounded by a big bar. Lots of tables inside, though we sat down outside. One of those places where I was made to feel most unwelcome after having ordered their overpriced beer and no food. Lackluster service catering only for snobs, beers good but not outstanding. Depending on how much time you have in Bern, this one can be skipped in favour of downing some bottled beers in the Rosengarten when the dusk sets in. Early Autumn sunsets in Bern are much more spectacular than this brewery anyway.“

“Yeah, this is one of the best beer bars I have seen. They have literally gone through two kegs since I've been sitting here (on a Tuesday!), their can + bottle selection is limited but has all kinds of crazy stuff I never see anywhere else (I've had two American beers here I've never seen before from brewers with wide distribution) and their taps are generally rarities with some gems. Like if you don't like this place I don't know why you're on this site. From now on, whenever I come to Switzerland I will make a point of a night in Bern so I can visit this place (also, Bern is super cool).“

“Bar in the old town of Bern. Standard wooden interior. Dim bar located in the cellar of an old house with standard interior. 12 taps with a mixed selections of small Swiss breweries with a focus on the area around Bern but also international imports (some of them well known classics, some of smaller and newer breweries). Additionally, they offer 50-70 cans and bottles but there is no menu and no prices are indicated. Most of the cans are stored in fridges behind the bar and in the dim light it is really difficult to see what is actually in, which is quiet annoying. Flights are available but there is not a big difference in price between flights and small servings of the individual beers (at least for the cheaper choices). In general the prices for the tapped beers are a bit above Swiss standards while cans can be quiet cheap. Service can be a bit slow, even if the bar is nearly empty. The offer Flammkuchen and some cold choices but I have not eaten in the bar. Overall, a good place to try beer or have some glasses in the evening.“

“Small, rustic bar in the old town of Bern. Located in an old building with an old tower incorporated in the room. Six rotating taps with mostly international imports from breweries of varying size and prominence. Normally, there are some hoppy brews on along with a sour and some dark options. Additionally, approximately 50 bottled beers are available all year long - focus on Belgian styles but also from bigger Swiss breweries - and usually some Cantillon is offered. A changing selection of 40-50 guest beers (bottles and cans) are showcased on a board inside the bar. Prices are Swiss standard. Plates of cheese and cold meat are available (recommended) but no warm food. Overall a beer bar with a nice atmosphere in the heart of Bern with an interesting and diverse selection of beers.“

“Located, just next to the Bärengraben, with a good view over the Aare valley and the old town of Bern. Situated in a huge hall with the copper tanks behind the bar. They offer their three standard brews and two specials. Heavy food - Swiss classics but also Asian offerings. Prices were ok but the beer quality was average at best. Still worth going there for the atmosphere - can be packed.“

“Small bar in a trendy part of berne, usually 5 taps mostly of their own beers. After the demise of 523, the garage beer at Barbiere is pretty much the only easily available hop-forward beer in the city. Good for an afternoon stop or for a chill evening despite the obviously small beer selection. Barbiere positions itself as a neighborhood hangout and that's just how it is.“

“Really nice brewpub in the center of Bern. You can drink their references with the sweet smell of malts from the brewer down of the building. 5 eur for 0.3 l beer.“

“The Bierkeller is on the other side and a little bit down the road from the Biercafe in the lower level of the arcades. The rooms have little decoration and are quite old, but have a charming and welcoming touch. The selection on the 10 taps changes, but you should be able to find something (otherwise, there is the Biercafe nearby).“

“Nice little bar with tables inside and outside. They had their own beer and a guest beer on tap at very reasonable prices. The service was friendly and the place is quite relaxing and comfortable as well as a bit improvised. Easy to reach via public transport.“

“The second one of the Au Trappiste in Bern, led by the same team. The Bierkeller focuses more on sour, vintage and dark styles as compared to the Biercafe Au Trappiste's focus on IPAs, although the boundaries aren't very strict. In summer, there is seating outside, however, during the colder months it's quite cramped inside in the actual basement. The taps never disappoint with a good selection of international beers. Despite the increase in high quality breweries in the region, the Bierkeller is centered around foreign offerings. At the time of my last visit, the exceptions were a staple Swiss beer by BFM and a seasonal by Blackwell. There is a well curated bottle list to drink-in with the option of take-out on some of them. However, the prices for bottles are quite steep, which pretty much makes me drink taps every time I visit. If you are in the Swiss capital, definitely visit both of the Au Trappiste but be ready for some sticker shock when looking through the bottle list.“

“Small bar close to the Au Trappiste Bierkeller with 6 taps and a few tall fridges of bottles / cans. Good range. However, much like the sister bar there seemed a real lack of space / seating, besides standing awkwardly in the walkway, or by the bar, so prob best to get here early to get a good spot. Perhaps a larger bar outside the centre is beckoning“

“Located in the upper level of the train station. We visited on a Friday night where it was definitely the place for local teens to stock up on cheap booze to drink outside the station. Thankfully they also stock some good stuff as well. A good representation of decent breweries from all the main beer-producing countries, and thankfully not just the same familiar beers - quite a lot of surprises dotting the shelves, including some Dogfish Head and some rare country beers, but unfortunately for me least 3 new ones had sold out, though I did scoop a Costa Rica tick. Some swiss ciders and a good range of wine and spirits too. Prices decent for Switzerland. Open til 10pm.“

“Located in the centre in an adjacent street to the main Old Town drag and a stones throw from their sister bar Biercafe Au Trappiste. These two bars are seemingly the main specialist beer bars of Bern, Bierkeller being in a cellar location accessible through open hatches in the street whereas the former is in a standard shop setting. Bierkeller's feel is small, cosy, bare brick, the room split by a wall, the bar on the right and small seating area on the left as you walk in. All seats were taken on our visit (around 15-20), and despite room for more in the bar area, or at least a ledge to put our drinks on, we had to stand. Expect around 10 taps, good range of style, though only one swiss beer. When I visit a foreign country my rule is to only drink beer from that country, so I expected to tuck into some nice 523, BFM, Trois Dames tonight, but found mainly UK, Italian, US and Scandinavian draft options in both bars. Clipboard bottled beer menu focussed exclusively on aged, expensive lambic, sour and other rarities so unfortunately in addition to the lack of seating we couldn't stay long. Prices - 8CHF for 25cl / 6 CHF for 15cl. Also serves food.“

“A second Trappiste location, opened in 2017: Bierkeller Trappiste. Not to be confounded with the "older" (original) Au Trappiste cafe on the street level in the very same Rathausgasse - the cafe can be found just a few meters away, on the other side of the street . A very nice location and a warm atmosphere in the cellar thanks to a dark, woody interior design; there are also a few seats on the street level during sunny and warm days. The differences: Twelve taps (instead of six in the cafe) plus a lot of special bottles. There’s also warm food available from a small kitchen in this location. All in all, a great addition to the original Trappiste - since they are located so close to each other, you can visit both in one go. Only downside: This location has no take-away option for the (on average more expensive and rarer) bottles while the original location offers this choice. On the other hand, the selection of bottled beers is very special and there’s a wider choice on tap. PS: This new location is open on Sundays, but closed on Mondays.“

“This place is best described in the local dialect as a ’bijou’, i.e. a small jewel standing out of its environment. The tap list at Au Trappiste is never boring and quite often outstanding with some sessionable beers followed by the occasional whale. The bottle selection is also fairly impressive, however, the fact that only staff is allowed to browse and pick items from the dark fridges is a little off-putting to me. The ambiance of the place is fantastic in its medieval style with warm lighting and ever-inviting feel. Due to its tiny size, Au Trappiste is quite often filled to capacity, however. The service is often a little slow and hard to reach, which is surprising given the manageable size of the place. A major negative point for my style of enjoying beer is the fact that the servers refuse to do small pours. Anything less than 2.5dl is not served which makes tasting all six taps in one sitting quite a challenge.“
