68 /100 Katzenjammers - Bierkeller & Restaurant (Restaurant) HOP EXCHANGE, 24 SOUTHWARK STREET Beer cellar. Quite German with lots of German beers; but a couple of craft. And lots of Wienerschnitzel and fries |
52 /100 45 SOUTHWARKS STREET Visited 7/3/2024. Wanted to check out if it was still a “Brewpub”. Chatted to one of the barmen. It’s not, brewing has ceased and equipment removed. It was getting in the way was how he put it. Now just a Sports Bar. It’s got lots of Camden Town hoardings and signage and a few of their core beers available. Around 18 taps. Plus some bottles. A smattering of interesting stuff (like a Renegade on tap and a Beer Brothers in bottle) but mostly it’s just faux craft, as per prior review. We were there around 4:30pm on a Thursday. Every table had reserved signs on them for later, and there’s lots of tables. Clearly it’s doing something very right but there’s not much for a beer ticker. It was a bit soulless empty, I can imagine it raucous when full, with the train running overhead adding to the din. I have updated the listing. |
62 /100 Southwark Tavern (Bar) 22 SOUTHWARK STREET Busy place in Borough. Ok selection of taps, a few cask ales, many keg, lagers, craft, cider. There should be something you want, though not super amazing. Ok overall. |
78 /100 Royal Oak (Harvey’s) (Bar) 44 TABARD STREET Neat neighborhood pub, seems refurbished recently. Has a very local feel to it. Good selection of Harveys beers which I dig. Could see this as my local if I lived anywhere close. Not a ticker's heaven, but a very good pub. |
64 /100 George Inn (Greene King) (Bar) GEORGE INN YARD, BOROUGH HIGH ST., SOUTHWARK Heritage pub spreading over several floors and numerous rooms. Seems to be quite popular. Lots of wood inside, but also some LCD TVs. They did have some interesting guest cask beers alongside Greene King selection. Worth checking out for the interior. |
80 /100 London Cider House (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET This was a pleasant surprise for me. Mix between a beer stand and a bottle shop. Nice selection of draft ciders and plenty available as bottle pours. Some meads as well. At least 50 different ciders in bottles. Friendly service. Well worth visiting. |
70 /100 The Rake (Bar) 14 WINCHESTER WALK Visited finally for the first time with Travlr. Small place, not sure if you could fit more than 5 people comfortably in there. Patio on the side. Decent selection of taps, nothing too exciting though. Some bottles I haven't seen around, but not a huge selection. Service could be more friendly. Anyway worth checking out if you're nearby, but not a destination bar even for London. |
68 /100 The Rake (Bar) 14 WINCHESTER WALK Solid bar just around the corner from Borough Market, affiliated with the Utobeer bottle shop in the market. They advertise no crap on tap, and indeed, it is all craft, but not all good craft. 18 taps, with 1/3 pints of all beers available, plus staff will do tastes. I wasn't too excited by anything on tap, but that could be reflective of the London beer scene more than the bar. Interior is very small, but there's also a nice patio. Not worth going out of your way for, but if you're in the area, it's definitely worth a look. |
80 /100 Utobeer Market Stall (Beer Store) BOROUGH MARKET, SOUTHWARK Really great shop right in Borough Market with allegedly the largest lambic selection in London (other than maybe Beer Merchants), and the lambic selection is indeed impressive. Lots of good cans and bottles from the around the UK and elsewhere as well. Definitely worth a stop for your bottle shopping needs. |
66 /100 Gladstone Arms, Borough (Bar) 64 LANT STREET This pub stands out. Not just the ivy covering, it's the fact that all other older buildings in the vicinity have be3n demolished and replaced with what I guess is social housing. When you walk in the floor and decor are pleasently worn down. They are a Desi pub so you get the aroma of enticing spiced food. Two other customers. A music venue. Not sure where the bands would play? Around 15 taps but mainly macro with the odd London craft option. Suspect it would offer the odd tick but has a nice local feel. |
66 /100 London Cider House (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET I guess they must have redeveloped this part of Borough Market... or I'd just never been to it before. Hoped I was heading in the right direction and then spotted the understated stall/bar. DIY looking wood. Out front they have a couple of taps (wad there mulled cider?) And you then have to enter the alleyway sized drinking area and follow the bar down to where the rest of the ciders are. Was in a hurry and after icecider. Only the one Brannsland was available so also had a mead. Certainly a place I'd nip into if passing. Staff were clearly used to dealing with tourists who'd randomly stopped by. On a Saturday in which the market was rammed they had one old guy who was presumably a regular and then a group of 4. |
64 /100 George Inn (Greene King) (Bar) GEORGE INN YARD, BOROUGH HIGH ST., SOUTHWARK A National Trust owned pub supplied by Greene King. Atmospheric inside and out, and all three levels are open. I saw four cask ales, but with no ber list, who knows? Had two guests in addition to the usual Greene King suspects. Worth a look. |
78 /100 London Cider House (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET An unexpected and pleasant surprise in Borough Market. Not long on atmosphere - looks like a bottle shop but with an open floor plan; open to the elements in this case. Front bar beckons the tourist. Back bar is quiet and less visited. Nice selection of ciers, perries, ice ciders, and distilled liquors of various sorts made with apples. Meads as well. Bottle samples from select (very nice) ciders and meads. Staff knew the products well and gave solid advice, plus the odd tasting sample. They do flights: four 50ml samples or four 125 ml samples if I remember correctly. Prices are not terrible for London. A must-stop for any cider lover. |
78 /100 The Rake (Bar) 14 WINCHESTER WALK Little has change since I first came here in September 2006, not long after they had opened he place. Their beer menu has grown, now with four cask ales in the front, and 14 taps on the wall behind the bar. Small pub room joined by an outdoor seating area close by with access to the Borough Market including the Utobeer stand. They offer thirds with four ales in each sample trays. Friendly and informative service. Obvious the best beer bar in this part of London. I have always felt comfortable at The Rake. (Visited with Magne 07.11.2022). |
64 /100 George Inn (Greene King) (Bar) GEORGE INN YARD, BOROUGH HIGH ST., SOUTHWARK Pretty much the same pub as it was when I first visited it in September 2003. A long building with historical value divided into smaller, cozy pub rooms. A proper Greene King pub, often with guest ales from local London breweries like Southwark Brewing Company. Close to the Borough market. Opens early. Polite service. I have always had well kept ales here. (Visited with Magne, 07.11.2022). |
76 /100 London Cider House (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET So I guess this place takes over from the New Forest Cider stall that was in Borough Market for many years, though New Forest does 'run' this, alongside Tom Oliver and distributors the Fine Cider Co. Like all the stalls in Borough Market it's a small set-up, with a basic bar and maybe 10 stools along the wall with people eating noodles from opposite stalls, and shelving with 75cl bottles available to buy.
5 draft lines (keg and box), and 5 bottle pours available, with some additional ice cider bottles and a handful of Olivers cider cans in the fridge. Prices fairly high, around £4 - £5 for a third-size bottle pour. 75cl bottles hovering around the £20 mark, which unfortunately meant we left empty handed. No New Forest ciders, strangely enough, and no affordable scrumpy-type cider.
Worth a stop, as interesting cider can be hard to find in London, but can't help feeling it could be a lot more. |
80 /100 London Cider House (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET Really great little find tucked away in Borough Market. They’ve got a small bar with a few bar stools for seating. You can get ciders to go to walk around in the market (served in plastic cups), or for drinking in (served in proper glassware). They have a bunch of ciders on draught available in half-pints, or a bunch of sexy bottle pours available in 125mL pours, usually between £3-4, a little pricey but reasonable enough for the quality of the ciders. They even had a couple of ice ciders available in 25mL pours for about the same price. Service was OK, a little sloppy and lacking attention, but otherwise nice enough. Highly recommended visit if you want to try some drier, funkier UK ciders. |
34 /100 45 SOUTHWARKS STREET Visited last Friday at about 19:00. So clearly just headed here for the macro scum London brewery tick. Was expecting it to be slightly nearer London Bridge but once I got there it was rammed with after work City drinkers. Not sure what the point of the St Felix beers is. The people here don't give a shit about the beer and it aids beside macro and faux craft stuff. I must be too old as it the atmosphere concisyed of people shouting to be heard by the person stood next to them. |
56 /100 Wheatsheaf (Youngs) (Bar) THE WHEATSHEAF, 6 STONEY STREET Visit many times. |
28 /100 45 SOUTHWARKS STREET Wandered in here on a Friday afternoon, it was still empty. A large space under the railway tracks with some exterior pizza making booths and a large bar. Quite the complex. Some of their own beers were available, and were just okay. Service was abysmal, rather incompetent, and I watched some poor sod schlep a bucket of tomato sauce across the floor while leaving a trail behind him. I couldn't see myself going here more than once. |
76 /100 Utobeer Market Stall (Beer Store) BOROUGH MARKET, SOUTHWARK Small busy open stall in Borough Market with a good choice of beers |
68 /100 George Inn (Greene King) (Bar) GEORGE INN YARD, BOROUGH HIGH ST., SOUTHWARK Old pub just off Borough High Street with a reasonable choice of beers |
78 /100 Market Porter (Fuller's) (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET, SOUTHWARK Classic rustic pub next to Borough Market with a very good range of changing beers |
80 /100 The Rake (Bar) 14 WINCHESTER WALK Small pub on the edge of Borough Market with a changing range of beer |
78 /100 Royal Oak (Harvey’s) (Bar) 44 TABARD STREET Delightful old pub serving Harvey's beers |
74 /100 Market Porter (Fuller's) (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET, SOUTHWARK Visit many times. |
74 /100 The Rake (Bar) 14 WINCHESTER WALK Visited several times. |
34 /100 Old Kings Head (Bar) KING'S HEAD YARD, 45 BOROUGH HIGH STREET This is a traditional old pub down a narrow alleyway off Borough High Street. Quite a tourist spot due to the location. The beers we had were in poor order unfortunately. The choice is mainly from Harveys Brewery but no tie that I could ascertain. |
78 /100 Utobeer Market Stall (Beer Store) BOROUGH MARKET, SOUTHWARK Small shop inside Borough market, decent selection of beers on the shelves and some chilled in the fridge, mostly from UK. A bit expensive. |
84 /100 Royal Oak (Harvey’s) (Bar) 44 TABARD STREET Time capsule of a bar. Good selection of Harveys on pump and in bottles. Lovely, old decor. On the good side of run down. |
70 /100 The Rake (Bar) 14 WINCHESTER WALK Super small place with limited indoor seating. Tables outside. Good selection of UK craft. Worth a stop on a sunny day when a the Borough market |
62 /100 Southwark Tavern (Bar) 22 SOUTHWARK STREET You can't miss this, right on the high-street prominantly on the corner just opposite one side of the market, and with some wonderfully dated, but still wonderful, external tiling. Inside's superficially a bit overcrowded, and aimed at people who want a stand-up swiftie, but if you dive round the back, you'll find some cozy little rooms for more of a sit-down sesh. Selection's not bad, I usually find a couple of real ale ticks, but it's not whoring to the ticker market. Food looked good, but beyond my eastern-european budget. Definitely worth popping you head round the door, in particular if you can avoid one of several daily rush hours. |
88 /100 Utobeer Market Stall (Beer Store) BOROUGH MARKET, SOUTHWARK ?? ?????? ????? ????????? ? ?????????? ????? ??????????? ?????? ????????, ????? ?????? ? ?????????? ?????. ? ????? ????? ??????? ? ?????????? ?????????? ????? ????. ???????? ?? ???????? ? ???????. ????? ???? ??????????? ?????. ? ????? ?????? ? ????????? ?????. |
78 /100 Market Porter (Fuller's) (Bar) 9 STONEY STREET, SOUTHWARK Pub clásico, variedad de cerveza en cask, bastante concurrido. |
68 /100 Globe Tavern (Bar) 8 BLEDALE STREET I had always given this a miss in the past but on reading the reviews below I thought I would give it a go. It is a little tight in there and a squeeze to get to the bar. It's very popular. There are a few keggy beers on which appears to be where the main choice lies. Comfortable and friendly. It's worth a look if in the area. |
54 /100 Sheaf (Bar) THE HOP EXCHANGE, 24 SOUTHWARK STREET We have been here a few times now, so time for a rating. It's always full when we go, so I am presuming that it is very popular but I don't really get the vibe in there. The range of beers seems mostly static, the bar can get stuffy and the TV's dominate showing any sporting dross. Not really a favourite for me but it is close to some decent pubs so does fit in. |
78 /100 The Rake (Bar) 14 WINCHESTER WALK There is a goid range of craft beer available both on tap (14 taps, 4 casks) and in bottles. There is a small indoor area while the outdoor beer garden under a big umbrella makes for a relaxing place to sit and sip. Given there was a lively lunch crowd enjoying a few tasty beers, bar service was quick and friendly. Prices are London craft beer scene standard. Worth a visit. |
64 /100 Wheatsheaf (Youngs) (Bar) THE WHEATSHEAF, 6 STONEY STREET The lunch time crowd was in so the place was quite busy but service was fairly quick and friendly considering. There are a number of small bars as well as a small area out front. There are ten taps with local main-stream craft, two casks of Young's and three guest casks. There is also a limited range of craft bottled beers. Prices are London standard (£6/pint). |
62 /100 Utobeer Market Stall (Beer Store) BOROUGH MARKET, SOUTHWARK The stock is mostly UK craft with a few European items as well as a small section of seasonal Christmas beers. There is a reasonable range of can/bottle beer on the shelves and a few cool ones in the fridge. Some items, depending on the style, are expensive while others are more reasonably priced. The three staff present were reactive to my purchase. |
66 /100 George Inn (Greene King) (Bar) GEORGE INN YARD, BOROUGH HIGH ST., SOUTHWARK This old pub is wedged in between modern buildings in the shadow of The Shard and has a number of small bars and a large outdoor area where we sat near a gas heater. It was well patronised by after-work patrons enjoying their pints. Service was prompt given the crowd. There is a limited number of beers on tap, all main-stream 'craft'. We also tried a gin flight and the three nips were very tasty. |
60 /100 Utobeer Market Stall (Beer Store) BOROUGH MARKET, SOUTHWARK Visited 31/10/2018. Visited a few times previously, not sure it’s quite what it used to be stock wise. Expensive. Staff showed little interest in customers on my visit. |
