“A rather long barroom located right over the Tyne Bridge on the Gateshead side. Outdoor seating with great view over the river and city. Eight beers on tap, all of them from Wylam. It seems that their own brewery has been closed down. Polite service. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024).“

“Nice view of the Newcastle & central bridges. Modern place - not brewing by themselves now. Wylam-only. Keg.“

“Glorious flatiron type building next to the main road in Gateshead before it becomes the Tyne Bridge. Lovely old building traditional-modern inside with plenty of nods to Irish culture inside without trying to be an Irish Bar. Its plentiful mix of craft cask and keg had a Belfast brewery tap takeover when I entered, and free Irish stew on a table in the corner.“

ARCH 14 HIGH LEVEL PARADE, WELLINGTON STREET
“In an arch unit immediately after the High Level Railway and Road Bridge ends on the Gateshead side, this venue has evolved into a bottle and microbar, with a couple of fridges of mostly craft cans if you'd rather take away instead of sampling their draft craft.“

“Above the railway junction by the High Level Rail Bridge just beyond four imposing red brick block of flats going up a hill, this is a 20th century purpose build locals place with cream walls. Multi-roomed but I was first customer in on the day so only ventured into the front area with split level seating and a wood burner. Just Ringwood Forty-niner on its 3 wickets on the shorter length of its 'L' shaped bar. I believe the other room hosts later night music.“

“In a railway arch immediately across the High Level Bridge in Gateshead. It's a small venue with orange painted shipping container style walls and busy in furniture, decor and patrons on the Friday afternoon I visited. Six crafted cask, over twice that many keg, it's easy to see why it's popular.“

“Under the arches facing the triangular area created by the junction attached to the High Level rail bridge on the Gateshead side. Quite a simple small area with a concrete floor, it does have traditional furniture smartening things up. Cask and keg options are practically all the rotating craft and there's enough choices here to please. A fridge of all sorts adds to the selection. Seats over two levels.“

“Under the Tyne Bridge on the Gateshead side, there's around 75 riverside picnic style tables here offering up views of all of the iconic bridges across the water. Beers inside the restaurant style room formed from rusting shipping containers have a mark-up due to the prime location.“

“Visited June 2023. Multi-level pub with a fine selection of beers. There's a rooftop bar/balcony at the top, a nice spot when the sun is out. It's a lovely pub.“

“Visited June 2023. Amazing location next to the Tyne Bridge. It's cracking spot for a beer when the sun is out, there's loads of outside seating. However £32.50 for 5 pints of a 4% pale (albeit a very decent one) for me and my friends was somewhat OTT. Nice place, ridiculous prices.“

“Visited on Saturday 15th April 2023, our final bar of a Metro/Ferry pub crawl with friends. This is a pleasant little homage to the Volkswagen Campervan, with various bits of them prominent around the place. Good real ale and a few keg lines, busy and cramped on our visit.“

“Friendly bar in the railway arches at the Gateshead end of the High Level Bridge. Gary, manager and campervan enthusiast, is a veteran of the local craft beer scene, and his experience shows in this little gem. Typical of a Railway arch micro, the décor celebrates the VW campervan, and the place has a light, airy feel. Imaginative, changing selection of ales, well kept, usually featuring a strong IPA, it has rapidly become a local favourite, and currently the go-to spot for my craft drinking friends. Prices very reasonable, close to The Central, and Station East. What's not to love? Highly reccomended.“

“I'ii keep this simple. I've been here twice. The first time, Mal an I entered, looked at the prices, and left without making a purchase. The second time , having arranged to meet a cycling friend under Covid social distancing conditions I suggested this place. The outdoor space is very pleasant on a summers day, and the position next to the Tyne is superb. It cost me north of 8£ for a beer and a coffee, both very nice. Didn't eat, as I had only brought my wallet, not my First-Born. Clientele.appeared to be beautiful hipsters with cash to spend. Staff were helpful and pleasant. Was it worth it? Nah.“

“A great location on the Gateshead side of the river, just under the Tyne Bridge. The main bar/restaurant is made from shipping containers, but don't let that put you off, its very nice inside, contemporary chic. There is a lot is outdoor seating which is particularly good when the weather is good. The beer choice is good, with many taps, but only a couple of cask beers. Also, a large range of bottles, some quite hard to find Belgian beers some as Westvleteren are available. The biggest criticism is the pricing which can be very high. The service is usually good, but it gets very busy at the bar at peak times. For food, there is the Trakol restaurant.which specialises in open fire grilled food. The quality is superb, well worth a visit. On Friday evenings and weekends, the Hawkers Market next door is open providing a large area of street food options from many different vendors. A little pricey, but good quality. A token system operates here. Overall, a great venue. You pay for the location in terms of beer prices, but I feel that it is a good addition to the quayside“

“Great location and looking venue beer list was really good but overpriced. Service was terrible served by people with no interest plus also served one of the brewery's own beers that was so obviously off. Waited to see if they would take it away without asking but they did not even give it a second look. It looked like murky river water and tasted the same. Style over substance“

“Fantastic location under the Tyne bridge on the Gateshead side with views back over the river. Shipping containers house the brewery and bar with good range of taps plus adjacent restaurant. Lots of seating inside & outside, great place for a sunny summers afternoon“

“Visited July 2018.. Short walk from the city center.. and what a place, just on the other side of the river..The pub build by 40 foot containers, which works great with the bar being placed next to the river.. great service.. even being as busy as when we visited the bar staff still managed a good job.. Beers served in good condition..they do both on tap and as bottles.. Lots and lots of seatings.. for sure worth a visit being in the area..“

“Visited 17/7/2018. Situated in what must be the best location in Newcastle/Gateshead right under the Tyne Bridge on the Gateshead south bank. Made from containers and featuring the brewery, bar and restaurant and lots of riverside seating. Currently offering a couple of their own (collaboration) brews and some good craft keg and bottles. A new must visit on any tour of the area.“

ARCH 14 HIGH LEVEL PARADE, WELLINGTON STREET
“Small shop in a railway arch combining craft beer with free range meats. Run by a couple, he's the butcher, she's the beer expert. Not a conventional bar, and if there are any vegans on vegetarians in your party, they might struggle. I visited with beer pal Mal on a Friday around 6.30pm, and there were about six people enjoying a beer, and chatting with the owners who were engaging and enthusiastic about their respective subjects. Large range of cans and bottles, and about 6 taps. We had an Almasty IPA which was well kept and served, and not over priced. Fits in well in an area of Gateshead we have pretentiously dubbed "The Bridges Quarter". Close to The Central, Station East, and the Railway Club all of which cater to beer lovers. So, you probably wouldn't want to spend all night here (indeed it shuts at 8 most nights), but it's well worth a visit. I'm sure we'll be back.“

“Wasn't sure how to update, so pleas read all the way through: I have a long association with this pub, which in pre Hadrian Border Brewery days was a tiny bar with a proper "local" feel, that was my first local on moving to Gateshead. I probably have a 25 year history with this pub, and can tell stories of glass eyes, fishing trips, beans, guns and temazepam, and a number of lasting friendships. Any way, Hadrian and Border took it on as an outlet for their beers, expanded into the railway arch next door, and we now have a big trendy barn with a chilly back room that smells of mould with inadequate toilets that you have to go upstairs to, Beers from Hadrian and Border, middle class ambiance, we had high hopes, but are rarely tempted to go. 12/10/2022: I've revisited, and rebooted the scores accordingly. New management, better selection, improved livelier ambiance as it's busier, definitely part of Gateshead's burgeoning "Railway Quarter", which you should visit if in the area. It's at the south end of the iconic High Level Bridge and features this pub, Axis, The Central, and my personal favourite, The Microbus. Numerous buses from Newcastle stop outside the Microbus, or it's a short walk across the High Level Bridge from the Bridge Hotel in Newcastle.“

“(From my archive:) A welcome retreat when the missus and kids are going berserk in the Metro Centre. You hardly expect "atmosphere" in a shopping centre pub, and you don’t get any. A couple real ales will help you survive though. “

“I’ll admit to a soft spot for the Black Bull: The ambience leans towards a Halloween party. The owner/manager is the lead singer with local band The Star Spangled Chest Wigs who specialise in punked up versions of cheesy 70s pop. The music vibe is predominantly punky, with Elvis, Johnny Cash, and reggae thrown in for variety, but nowt po-faced and serious. There is live music in the function room. I tend to go in with friends early on a Friday when there is an eclectic but cheery gathering at the bar. Service is good and helpful, and although there are only three pumps, the Proper Job I had last time was Top Notch. Close to the transport interchange, so very accessible. So, if you visit, and it’s not to your taste, it’s easy to move on: why not give it a try?“

“On the road between the metro stop and the main commercial street in Gateshead. This Wetherspoon pub goes deep into its building with the main seating in front of the long bar which hugs the side wall. Traditional in look with a comfortable and appealing decor. Visited in 2012.“

64 /100 92 SHERIFFS HIGHWAY
“Big old ale house on the border between Low Fell (posh) and Sheriffs Hill (not posh). Eclectic and somewhat chaotic at times, but never less than entertaining. Music is prominent, leaning towards old punks and tribute bands. Landlord Paul does his best for his customers. There’s usually 2-3 real ales on draught, and bottles appear and disappear according to some randomised system that nobody’s worked out yet: Bank holiday weekends are good, usually involving a pie or sausage festival, and bands. The pub has celebrity fans in author Bill Bryson, and actor Ian McKellen who have been known to pop in for a pint when in the area. Robust, unique, perhaps not for the faint-hearted or over sensitive, worth a visit if you find yourself in Sheriff Hill. Handy for the local A&E, and public transport links! By the way, I’m not the Mayor. 30/07/2017 Haven’t been in lately, but friends report a deterioration in beer quality: the word "shite" was used.“

60 /100 METROCENTRE, 85 RUSSELL WAY
“Fairly small Wetherspoon inside the Metrocentre that’s family oriented and the only one so far with a lane for queuing to the bar. Most people come here for meals and it has a very nice finish to the traditional pub furniture and decor alongside some other nice touches such as images of Newcastle on the lampshades that hang down from the ceiling. Ales are served here but the selection is lesser than others in this chain.“

“A very busy restaraunt/pub in a mall. Lots of families, children and elderly. Not the greatest place to drink, especially with only a few local taps, but if you are in the mall anyways doesn’t hurt to stop in. Food was mediocre and prices low.“

“By default, probably the pub I visit most regularly, but much as I respect the ’spoons, I can’t bring myself to call it my local. Typical Weatherspoon’s ambience. A long bar area with a dining area immediately to the left of the entrance down a few stairs, and an outside space in a concrete garden at the very back of the pub. Family friendly before 7.00 pm. Staff are friendly and helpful, although I don’t get the sense they are all ale enthusiasts. Good rotation of (usually) well kept beers. Bargain of the season last time I was in for tea: Adnams / Stone Double IPA, 8.5% at £1.95 a pint! They have also had a couple of local brewer events recently, from Big Lamp, and Black Paw. Food can be hit and miss. Remember it’s cheap and cheerful and not fine dining. I don’t eat here that often, but I’ve never had any major complaints, and their big breakfast is just that, and good value to boot. Usually busy with a variety of customers passing through, and close to the transport interchange. Never seen any lairiness, but then again, I’ve never been in late evening when the locals are tanked up. Better than average ’spoons, much better than their Metrocentre outlet.“

Schooner (Bar)
SOUTH SHORE ROAD
“Out of the way Pub on an Industrial Estate in Gateshead, although the pub itself is on a leafy road facing the river Tyne. Hasn’t been open long, but has become a firm favourite with my local beer afficianados. Management are ale lovers, and there is a regularly changing selection, all from what I could judge on my last visit, kept in cracking condition. I haven’t eaten here yet, but people who have rate the food. Although it’s a bit off the beaten track, I intened to get here as often as I can. It was busy last early Friday, and there was live music from a country string band.10/07/2015: Since my last entry, I have eaten here several times, and the grub is great. Special mention for the fat chips. Also worth mentioning is the fine, eclectic range of live music, and for those of my generation the "Auld fellas" music quiz is worth checking out“

“A gem. Used to be an old run down boozer in a beautiful building, until taken over by the Head of Steam, and lovingly restored into a real ale/craft brewery paradise. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly knowledgable staff, always interesting selection of beers & ciders. Nice food, live music, definitely the bar for a drink before your concert at the Sage.“
