“Has the chain feel, but that said it had solid seasonals on tap and decent food and service. I’d go back if in the area.“

“The real estate costs for this place have got to be astronomical. So the high prices were to be expected. For those who’ve been to one of the many Yard Houses, this is yet another. They have a long list of beers on draft, mostly in the "quality craft" category, but surprisingly few local or unique options, just like other Yard Houses. The food is good, the service friendly. Decent choice.“

“I’ve moved back the Phoenix area after being gone 18 years. Back in the day, AJ’s was the place I’d go to buy beer (although the location I shopped at is gone). Although you can still get a few singles here, otherwise this AJ’s selection is somewhat pedestrian. I only found a handful of the wide variety of local possibilities, and the days of splitting 6-packs is gone evidently. Gotta pick from a limited lineup if you want singles. The entire beer selection was limited to a 12-foot-long cooler. They have more at Fry’s, if a few less quality picks. I’ll keep looking ...“

“Comfortable, cool, and clean. Good service, quick too. A good number of taps, but the offerings were only o.k. Nothing that would compel me to come back. Pizza was great. Very high prices. Lame music. The sort of chain place that’s shooting for totally forgettable general mass appeal.“

“Can’t say it’s a beer destination in that the drafts and bottles are what you would expect to find in a German restaurant. The fact that the bartender could pull the beers properly and give good conversation is reason enough to recommend the place. This food is also pretty solid as well. Apparently it gets insanely crowded for Oktoberfest so be warned.“

“Definitely the place to go to for beer in Glendale with a much larger selection than total wine in both overall bottles as well as creating your own sixer. They have a nice assortment of local and regional stuff and the total wines in the area have also picked up their Shelton Brothers selections. Nice to find a number of Mikkeller bottles. They also sell growlers but I can’t say i saw a lot of beer knowledge being dropped during that process. Still if you have access to this site on your mobile you’ll be fine.“

“Pretty much like the Scottsdale location. In fact you could cut and paste my review from any of the Phoenix area BevMo locations and be pretty close to accurate. This one did have a slightly bigger pick six section and hey they have a half gallon of liquor infused ice cream for like $25.“

“Definielty a nicer venue that some of the other AJ’s but a big letdown beer wise. Has half the selection of the Via Linda location in Scottsdale but with none of the interesting specialities, but hey if you want to pay a dollar more for a bottle of Cheerwine then you’d spend in North Carolina then be my guest.“

“Great local place. Servers are excellent. Food is good as well as the pricing. They have select beers for only a dollar on Wednesdays(with purchase of food) and happy hour all day everyday. They have EXCELLENT beers and 19 total on tap.“

“OK?! An Oggi’s in AZ? To date I’ve only been to the one in Santee, on several occasion, so I don’t have a deep Oggi’s base of knowledge to make a comparison. Well this one is more square and open with no nonsense tables, seating and decorations. This place has a full on warn in feel with sort of rickety squeaky chairs and all. They have some 20 TV’s up on all of the walls tuned to various sports and I see about 16 to 18 items on tap. It is interesting, the Oggi’s I’ve been to is crammed with Padre and Charger stuff on every available surface, and it’s everywhere. By comparison this Oggi’s has sparse Jersey’s and Team banners and such. I see local teams as well as the 49ers (could that be right?). The beer offerings are pretty nice with core brews a few guest taps like Racer 5 (yummy) and then an Oggi’s IIPA I don’t recognize as well as the always incredible, when fresh, Hop Juice. If you can confirm Hop Juice is on tap and that it is fresh and you need a hop fix this is the place to head.“

“Typical AJ’s with an upscale feel and sometimes upscale or larger variety of produce, meats and cheeses. The beer selection does not differentiate itself from other AJ’s, maybe a bit worse than some, and about the same as a sub-par Whole Foods. Yep, no need to go out of your way unless you’re driving right by.“

“hit this place 10/23/11. absolutely jam packed at 6 pm! my dumb-ass completely forgot about oktoberfest! outdoor seating with about 500 other people listening to an oompah band, eating schnitzel and drinking konig from a one litre... awesome! plus, they have barenjaeger... bitchin!

i’d like to return when the menu isn’t limited and can get a real feel for the place.“

“I was stationed at Luke AFB in 2000-2002 and just so happened to find this little gem in Glendale. Am I glad that I did! The food was excellent, especially the german potato salad and red cabbage. I live back in Oklahoma now and really miss this place. If i ever get back to the Glendale area, I will definitely stop in and enjoy this place once again. The beer was so good and yes, they do have an excellent selection. My wife and I still talk about this fine establishment,10 years later.“

“This is a pretty decent RockBottom. I’ve usually been there at off hours so I’ve never had an issue with waiting or finding a good place to sit. The food is pretty decent and the beers are solid, if unspectacular. Good place to bring the family.“

“More or less an average Rock Bottom, the bartender was very much on the ball and more experienced than most locations. A decent sized bar. Decent light coming inside, this is a medium sized restaurant compared to the big chains. The beer was better than average, although the selection was a bit less. Craft beer drinkers have way too much competition to hang out there, but was worth a stop as I was in the area.“

“Total Wine is one of the best locations for beer in Phoenix when you factor in all of the categories above. You will find a slightly larger selection of hard to find items elsewhere, but the breadth of selection with PRICE factored in cannot be beaten here. Don’t get gouged elsewhere. There seems to be a lot of "turn-around" on the beers as well, with the occasional odd moment of them selling out of things such as Gulden Draak or Piraat (but always replenished next shipment). This place has the warehouse/wal-mart feel, but the prices come along with that, and this is certainly welcome in a beer community that has been starved for value-focused liquor merchants. “

“BevMo chain stores are opening across the valley. This location has an average selection for a large liquor store, but certainly far above the typical Sportsman’s. Ian is the only beer person I’ve met at this location and he can help you with special orders. Very good prices when the bevmo "club" prices come out on "macro" craft beers such as offerings from Sierra Nevada, Stone, etc. Prices are very reasonable. Selection is significantly above average, but you won’t find the rare stuff like you can get at AJ’s at 67th & 101 - the best beer location in the Valley. “

“One of the few German places in the Phoenix area, Haus Murphy’s offers a good quality selection of taps. From 10 choices draft, you’ll usually find some of the better offerings... Spaten Optimator, Weihnstephaner Hefe-Weizen, Warsteiner Oktoberfest, Spaten Oktoberfest and more in bottles. They have just about every Weihnstephaner bottle that is available in the local market, in addition to Guinness & the regular variety of other countries. All draft beer and many of the bottled offerings are served in their proper glassware, complete with logos. Nice. Bar also has quite a few rare German schnapps and other spirits/cordials. Food is authentic, as is the atmosphere. Good crowd of older German immigrants or "enthusiasts", especially in the early Fall months. Has a very pleasant, non-pretentious feel to it. Prices are very reasonable. Don’t be fooled into thinking the place is small overall. There is a small dining area that faces Glendale Avenue, but at least twice that seating area is available in the charming bar dining room area where they usually have live bands on special occasions. Outdoor seating is decorated in Oktoberfest style and is open virtually year round - and it runs the whole length of the building. Beers may be served in 1 litre dimpled mugs upon request. Nice touch. Of course they also have the glass boot !!“

“I was a former a "regular" at Oggi’s due to convenience and overall satisfaction with the place. Oggi’s was a nice, clean sports brewpub just off the 101 at 67th Ave. Traditional sports bar atmosphere with multiple TV’s and sports memorabilia plastered across the walls. Fairly relaxed atmosphere when visited at times other than during major sporting events. Quality of beers is above average, some quite good - especially the retired hefe-weizen and scottish ale. Pale Ale is more of an IPA to me. Seasonals are hit or miss, and do NOT qualify for the happy hour discount (I learned the hard way, even though the advertising sign at the door for happy hour doesn’t say this). (Edit: service has deteriorated significantly in 2006) Sevice is sometimes great, but usually just good. Daytime bartender seems to have an attitude and doesn’t know anything about beer. Waitresses are cute and equally ignorant ("would you like to try our hefey-whyyy-zen?") but they check back with you often, keep your beer glass full, and are very consistent. (Edit: food went downhill in 2007. Many menu items not at all similar to former presentation and taste: example: artichoke dip) (Edit: 2008-09 got rid of their best beer, the Bavarian style Hefe-Weizen, and replaced it with an American wheat that is undrinkable. Also new menu design and higher prices on happy hour appetizers. They were something like half off the original price and now there’s just a happy hour menu with some discounts) Food can be quite good. Kudos for the famous Oggi-stix, artichoke cheese dip, fried zucchini sticks, friend cheese ravioli, and pesto-pizza. Very fresh, soft n pillowy crusts with high quality cheese. For this part of town (Arrowhead) the prices are reasonable, especially at happy hour, but some of the gourmet pizzas are a little pricey. Lunch specials are quite affordable too, for around $7 you get a salad plus another food item. Avoid this place unless there’s nothing else in the area you care to visit. “

“Some of the worst service I’ve ever experienced in Arizona - long delays, a bartender who serves you a beer and then disappears for a good 15 minutes or so, and lots of attitude for no reason. To make things worse, this place suffers from some sort of sewer-leakage smell. Maybe it’s not their fault or it’s from the outside but it comes and goes, and I refuse to go here with friends and co-workers now. It’s over the top. They don’t clean their tap lines very well. You’ll be amazed at how many beers taste like the previous one in the same line, and it’s the worst for the ex-orange hefe-weizen line. They replaced that with Trumer Pils once and it was literally an orange pils, but they refused to acknowledge the problem. Old Chicago is first and foremost a pizza place and you’ll notice this right away from the atmosphere. For most patrons the emphasis is on having pizza with a few beers and then going home. The beer selection is slanted for that crowd as well - you can choose among many domestic macros, canadian macros, and domestic sleeper macros like blue moon wit and red hook. They offer a handful of specialty beers like arrogant bastard, however they are all in bottle only and aren’t always in stock even though the menu lists them. You can still find a few quality micros on tap, such as Widmer, Alaskan, New Belgium, etc. however most (but not all) of these are found throughout the Phoenix bars that don’t claim to have a beer lover focus. So, if you’re accustomed to the Toronado, the Map Room, Monk’s, or even the local Papago then you will find Old Chicago disappointing. However if you’re primarily looking for decent pizza with a little bonus then you’ll be surprised. Food is average. Typical restaurant/pub fried appetizers aren’t bad. Given there are so many superb pizza places in Phoenix it makes Old C’s pizza look a bit below par. Nothing special about it, and after living in the Chicago area for several years I can say with some authority that Old C’s pizza isn’t quite Chicago style. “

“I do have some fond memories of swilling at this place after Algonquin Theatre Co. shows. The waitstaff is very tolerant of two dozen screaming, emotional actors just commandeering the patio. Food is what you’d expect at RB. Beer is slightly less. They tend to run out of things that aren’t pale, light or gold. Not the most experimental jewel in the franchise.“

“Re-rate. Sadly, not worth the trip anymore, besides the cold storage. Nothing out of the ordinary that you couldn’t find at the better beer store in the area. ------------------------------- Well worth the trip no matter where you live in the valley. Jonpol is a great guy and very helpful. I overheard him giving tons of advice tonight to a newbie as I was looking through the huge selection of great beers. As others have said, have no fear in buying a beer past its prime - inventory flies through the store and the conditions are top notch.“

“A shadow of its former self, this used to be a Mecca of craft beer but with recent changes, the passion is gone. Slowly, they fazed out their better brews and replaced them with substandard offerings. The wall cooler, once filled by premium craft selections will likely lose space to wine. Sad...it was so close to home and got me interested in the possibilities.“
