“Nice place connected to my hotel. I was here for a private party in the back room while the rest of the brewery was still open. At our private party, there were 6 beers on tap. All average to slightly above, with nothing I'll remember next week. Service was friendly, and the food they served us was good.“

“6-7 minutes out of the downtown, this is a pretty good spot as far as chains ago. Almost 20 beers on tap. But no flights or small pours - though staff will do tastes. Some solid beers on the list, but also pointless macro crap. Friendly service but they aren't informed about beer. Not a must visit, but it's a pleasant chill place.“

“2 long blocks from City Steam, this is worth a quick look. Tired old sports bar feel. Over 20 taps, but no flights or small pours, so you're left with 12-16 oz pours depending on the beer for at least $7. Staff were nice but not beer aficionados. Not a ticking spot by any means, but a decent spot for a beer downtown.“

“Fun place right in downtown Hartford. Old school, tired brewpub feeling. 16 house beers or so. Flights of 5 available for a super cheap $6, but they serve them in terrible glasses and staff really don't seem to care about the beers they serve despite being rather friendly. Beer quality was surprisingly solid though, so I'd recommend a stop for that if in Hartford.“

“I had two of their craft brews during happy hour. I had the fish and chips and they were quite good. The wait staff was a little inattentive at the end of happy hour, even though we had not been served our dinner yet. Otherwise the service was fine.“

“This is a great little place in Hartford. Great BBQ food, Blues music and taps of mostly craft beer. On a recent trip the two roads seasonal turned out to be Sip of Sunshine. A very nice surprise. Food is typical BBQ fare with some Çajon too, but quite good and reasonably priced. A good place for a brew and food!“

“If you’re in Hartford, this is the place to go for a brew. I first visited back in 2008 and got a sampler of their regular beers and wasn’t terribly impressed at the time. Finally came back again in summer 2015 and had a much better experience. A nice open brewpub, plenty of seating, including outdoor seating. There is also a room with pool tables. The beer selection was better than I remembered, with about 10-12 beers on tap, including a few interesting IPAs and an imperial stout. The beers I tried were quite good (a couple in the 3.8-3.9 range). The food menu was pretty extensive as well, pretty much standard American fare (I had a chicken wrap, which was good, and some soup). I’d definitely recommend this place, especially given the paucity of brewpubs in Hartford, but actually the beer quality seems to have improved quite a bit in the last few years.“

“A large brewpub near the centre of town. It’s in a grand old building and from the entrance I thought it was going to have an ornate interior but the main ground floor area is quite basic and also dark as the brewing kit and some shelves obscure the large window at the front. It felt a bit grubby but actually it has “character” - a proper working brewpub rather than a sterile cooker cutter sort of place. There’s another room with a pool table on the ground floor, a comedy club downstairs and an upstairs room with balconies at different levels and some elegant arched windows and wrought iron banisters (what I’d expected from the outside in fact). There’s a solid line up of beers available as samplers with the strength given in Platos. (Visited 30 October 2012).“

“I wasn’t expecting much since I am not a huge fan of the City Steam beers I have purchased from my local but this is a great brewpub. Good selection of decent brews and a basic pub menu consisting of food that is better than average. Huge place with lots of character.“

“I went on a Monday evening for dinner and some local beers while in Hartford on Business. It was not busy. The ambiance is just plain old Bar. Historic brick building with dark wood interior sets a mellow mood. I sat at the bar and the bartender was really nice. One of the people sitting and eating was an off duty employee and we talked beer for a while. I thought the beer selection was solid. They had something for everyone. I am a malt guy and I enjoyed several there.“

“I stopped in here last week while on vacation with the family. This brewpub sits in and old brick building just dripping with history in a downtown section of Hartford. Old dark wood and Victorian accents adorn the 2 floors of restaurant space amid the huge windows that look to the city. 12 or so homemade brews adorn the menu along with the standard course of pub grub. A Monday night was surprisingly active but the service was steady and attentive. I sampled several beers that ranged from mediocre to great but was pleasantly surprised by the quality overall. The food was decent and the pricing was on par with what I expected to pay. I’d revisit if in the area. again.“

“Cool spot in downtown Hartford. 39 taps this day, and they say 99 bottles, which looks about correct. Didn’t eat. Lots of TVs, cool dark ambiance. Flights on Monday’s only, which is a bit annoying (I see no reason why tap rooms can’t do this whenever). Decent local beer selection and a variety of other beers, but nothing super elite or rare - certainly an abundance of decent craft beer options though.“

“Visited fairly late on a cold Monday night and found a decent sized crowd. Local feel, traditional American pub with several large screens showing sports. They had at least 8 house beers to choose from in a wide variety. Had three beers which were fair to good, and the Thai chicken skewers which were a bit dry but tasty. The bartender was an amicable fellow. All in all a good visit and I’d go back. (Brewery #593)“

“Stopped in for dinner and a comedy show. The hostess had to change our seats for the comedy show to accommodate another group, so we got our tickets for free. Sweet. Had a few beers on tap (oatmeal stout, APA, Winter in Ardennes), and they were pretty nice. Had a "Vermonter" sandwich (pork, apple, bacon), which was good, and an apple baked in puff pastry for dessert. Our server clearly hated his life, and it was a hassle just to have him get a round of drinks for us. The comedy was entertaining. Average ambiance; I don’t know if it’s always filled with drunk college fucks, but it was when I was there, so there were a bunch of meatheads looking to fight. Decent, I’d go back.“

“Great selection of beers on tap 18 in total as well as 45 different bottles ranging from Innis & Gunn, Sierra Nevada, Farmhouse Ales, Harpoon, Goose Island. The food is terrific as well. There are most famous for there "Bar Bites, Bar Chicks, Bison Bites & Turkey Bites" All delicious. Their burgers are phenomenal too, check out my two favorites the "Ken’s Favorite" (Topped with Bleu cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo.) & The Swiss Burger (Topped with sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and Dijon mustard.) All for under $10!!“

“Visited on a busy Saturday night. Luckily we got there right before the big rush. The bartender was clearly over-whelmed but since we had spots at the end of the bar, he took care of us and was still friendly. The food was average pub fare. Nothing note-worthy. As far as the beer goes, they are average- to slightly above. They only sell Growlers due to CT state law however, A few local stores carry the Naughty Nurse and Blonde on Blonde in 12 oz. bottles. They also had a really cool DJ spinning music after 8 pm. Overall I liked the place but it had a lot to do with the friends I was with. If you find your way to downtown Hartford, I feel it’s worth a pint or three.“

“This is the place that introduced me to ’craft beer’. The food is decent and the service is mixed depending on the time of day. City Steam is definitely a fixture in the brewpub scene in CT, and besides TullyCross in manchester, one of few options in central CT. I try to stop by for a pint at least once a season. I prefer their wheat beers over most of the others, although Norwegian Wood is a hidden gem (when brewed) “

“Stopped here for lunch. What’s most impressive is the building itself. Very large, old and with multiple levels. They had pool in the back and a comedy club as well. I found the brews to be pretty diverse. The Careless Love and Innocence Ale to be my favorites. The food was also pretty good. I would return to hang and see what the place is like when it’s busy.“

“Great little find in downtown Hartford--good ambiance, service, and a superb selection of draught and bottled beer--from seasonal taps including the British/U.K. standards and Stone/DFH /Flying Dog to Chimay, Orval, Victory, DFH, Stone, Sierra Nevada, Bluepoint, etc. in bottles. This is a little bar with a "I can do it" attitude in the midst of numerous standard macro beer taverns surrounding it. Owner and staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and appreciative of their customers. Food is above average. My "go-to" bar when I’m in town.“

“A nice bar downtown. You can find parkig fairly close. Busy, it was pre-Tom Petty concert. A working guy’s place, the several tables and the bar were all taken. The beer was nothing too special, the macros were the guest beers. Heavier drinking bar, cocktails and the like. Service was good considering the activity. Worth a stop if and only if you are in the downtown core. A restaurant more than a ber bar.“

“Good place, lots of fun anytime, the goods- great selection of draught and bottles, great pub grub, and great atmosphere. the bads- parking is a joke for this place, street parking in a less-than-desirable neighborhood, and prices are pretty steep. highly reccommend it if your here for a visit and find that theres nothing to do in hartford, which ill be the first to say that, be prepared to find some fantastic beers, but be prepared to spend for it.“

“This has to be one of the best looking pubs I’ve ever been in. The outside is a massive 4 story stone building with lots of original stained glass. On the inside, the huge stained glass windows illuminate a multi-storied pub with polished brass everywhere. I could do without the TVs, but there are very few places these days without them, it seems. The beer is fairly lacklustre, although there are a few decent samples. It certainly isn’t one of the better brewpubs I’ve been to, but I do enjoy the ambiance of the place. It’s proximity to the I-95 is one of it’s greatest attributes.“

“My friend and I ended up stumbling upon this place while waiting to see Green Day in concert. Pretty decent bar scene. They make their own beers that range along different styles, and the sampler glasses they have are unique. If you’re not there for beer, they have tons of sugary, mixed drinks (their own concoctions). Anyway, the bartenders were cool, and I even had a buyback. I don’t know how much they knew about beer through. The overall atmosphere is more like a bar whose primary is to attract anybody who drinks anything than a bar that prides in beer culture. For that it’s disappointing. #10 on 29102009, DG.“

“I visited for the second time in a few years last week. Great pub atmosphere: a bit dim, but great tables, bar and paraphrenalia around the walls. Service was ok- great at first, but as the place got busier it took a while to get the bill. Beer selection was ok- mostly Belgians, Irish, English, and InBev beers. Would love to see more Americans and locals. Two parking spaces in front of the place do not give much away. Food was great, even for a vegetarian. Big problem was beer prices- $8.75 for a pour. Not a problem, but prices were not disclosed until the check came.“

“Walk in to a really cool building with several floors and tables all over stairwells, etc. I think this used to be a department store, maybe... Great vegetarian options, and they use beer in the food, which I really like. They had a raspberry mead, several lagers, an amber, a Baltic Porter, an IPA, and a sweet stout on tap. It looked really interesting. The beer overall was pretty good, the service was great although the place was not busy at all, and the beer was good. It is a tad on the expensive side, but I would definitely return the next time I’m in Hartford.“

“A lively place to go with a decent selection of beer brewed in house. On wednesday nights they have live Irish jam band music. I only had a salad there so I can not rate the food, but the beer was mediocre. The atmosphere, more than compensates for the beer.“

“Large, very large, very very large place. Something like three floors. There’s even a room with a bunch of pool tables. TVs everywhere, you won’t find a seat without a TV in plain view. Overall this place feels like an extra-large sports bar. Not unpleasant but very impersonal. A good selection of homebrews on tap (about 10 or 12) and they sure try to go beyond the ‘Blonde’, ‘amber’, ‘stout’, etc. Unfortunately the average quality is quite low. I tried 6 different beers and they were all below 3 (but above 2) in my book. I didn’t eat there but I saw plates going around and they looked like standard greasy food pub fare. It’s worth a stop, because anyway what else is there to do in Hartford.“

“Sure, a decent stop to make on you travels through Hartford, but this place wasn’t all that special. Service was standard, the selection high in number (but weak in breadth), and the value typical. Definitely make a stop if you can, but don’t expect gormet beer. No idea if the food is decent or not.“

“From the outside, this looks like a typical Irish pub. Once inside when you view their beer list, it’s clear that this place is anything but typical. The bottle menu is decent, the tap menu usually has some decent beers on. If you’re in Hartford for more than a weekend, this is worth checking out. Otherwise, time would be better spent at City Steam and John Harvards.“

“This place has a decent selection of homebrew supplies and the staff are friendly and helpful. Their prices are a little on the high end which is to be expected for the area. “Interesting decor, with art in odd places and a number of different levels. Service was a let down, and the selection was lacking at the moment, but the beer I received was fantastic. “For Hartford, which doesn’t have a lot going for it anymore, this restaurant/pub stands out. Far from your average sports bar, this area immediately around the taps is very inviting. In the back there are pool tables, but if you’re interested in sampling the liquid, the bar is the only place to go. I’ve been there during lunch and dinner, and found lunch to be the better time, if only because of the attention you receive. There was a selection of about 8 brewed beers to choose from, including a barleywine, IPA and stout.“

“Interior is a typical brewpub look with the industrial thing going on, pool tables in the back and a terrace dining area. The menu’s above average with some nice snacking foods. Not all the typical burger and nacho crap usually associated with brewpubs. When I was there, there was a belgian ale, barleywine, scotch ale and several staple brews of their own on draft each of which was above average to very good. The service was excellent and the waitress who served us knew a great deal about beer and brewing. I can see this place being a headache at night, but during lunch time on a weekend, it’s definitely worth a stop.“

“We started with dinner, on one of the upper floors that overlooked the staircase and some lower floors. It’s a cool setup, nice atmosphere. The food was great, had a peppercorn coated steak with a gargonzola cheese sauce. Superb food, was very pleased. After that, we headed to the bar for some good brews. They had about 8 or 9 house brews on tap. I didn’t notice if they carried any guest beers, nor did I really care. The styles ranged from biere de garde, to dortmunder, to ipa, to bock, to light lager. Interesting range, and everything I tried was excellent, especially the biere de garde. Service was excellent, and barkeep even threw us a couple free pints after we had sat for a while. There’s a monster flat screen TV above the bar, which was playing a basketball game while I was there. In a separate room from the dining and bar area, there is a pool table room, with 7 or 8 pool tables. We played one game, but our table was on a monstrous slant, so we gave up pretty quick, and couldn’t get another table. There’s also a comedy club downstairs, which I haven’t seen yet. The night we were there, a band stopped in and played for a couple hours. They played directly in the bar area, and it got pretty crowded, of course this was a Saturday night... so I guess I should have expected that. Regardless, we still managed seats at the bar.“

“Well, crap I havent rated this place. Anyway, this is a standard brew pub/restaurant in the front with a few pool tables in the back. They typically have about 8-10 of their own beers on tap. Bartenders are pretty clueless and the beer has this weird anise twang to them. The food is ok and they have a few HDTVs which are cool. Parking can be a bitch depending on the time and day. I wouldn;t support this place now that I’ve read the brewmaster’s ignorant comments regarding ratebeerians.“

“Layout allows for many different areas - couches, bar area, dining area, pool room. Everything was clean and shiny. The brass and mahogany motif is perhaps a bit overdone and there were TVs everywhere you looked in the bar area although the only person that seemed to be paying attention to the football games on each of them was the bartender. Service was friendly. Beers were generally uninspired despite the wide array of styles attemted and the imaginative naming. Food was really not very good. Stale and greasy. Overall this seems to be a case of style over substance and I wouldn’t go out of my way to return.“

“This is a typical American Style Irish Pub. They have a bar with some TVs and a few booths. A pretty impressive European Bottle list. They have a fair amount of German beers on the menu. Nothing special on tap really, but they do have some cool offerings when it comes to their bottles. Bottles are a little expensive, though. Worth checking out.-----re-rate 3/25/06---bottle and tap menu are still about the same. You will find a couple of interesting beers on tap, but nothing overly crazy. The bartender they usually have cask ales in the winter, although they only had 1 all winter this year. Menu is interesting, yet the prices are a little inflated. I asked for chicken on my country salad and it was omitted.“
