“Stopped in with family and friends on my first trip back to Europe in over a decade. This is the closest (still open) brewery to the little town of 150 that they’re from.

This brewpub also has rooms for rent upstairs. I guess the brewery serves more as a hotel restaurant than a beer drinker’s destination. Outside there is plenty of seating and also a swing set to keep the kinder busy while you have a beer. Inside there are some booths scattered around the room and behind the counter is the brewing equipment. All copper kettles, very clean and very pretty. The people I was with asked me some brewing questions since they had heard that I homebrew and due to my lack of German vocabulary we got into a debate about what malt (malz) is. To them malz is only what is used in malziber which is low alcohol beer that is often given to kids. The employees were no help either, as they don’t brew anything (at least not the people working the restaurant). I was trying to explain that malt is just malted grain, but of course I didn’t know the name for barley. I had to look it up later when I got to a computer with German google. Gerste. It was a frustrating conversation but several half liters of house beer later (and bananaweizen) it was all good.

The beers were all pretty average for their styles. The helles was my favorite but the bastardized hefes were fun to drink too (banananweizen and colaweizen). They sell beer to go to if you ask.

The food was decent but expensive. Socialist pricing structure for sure but the service was good. What’s kind of neat is that you can order a whole pig and/or wild boar. Or if you’re feeling really adventurous you can order a whole ox. I suspect you need a LOT of people to finish any of those.“
