“Lovely old pub just off the centre a little way. There is a pleasant courtyard garden area then an old fashioned interior. Strange opening hours. Great beer list including imported bottles from around the world, which we did utilise. Definitely the best pub in Hertford.“

“Quite a large, old pub on the Folly Island area of Hertford, next to the River Lea canalised section. Lots of seating surrounding the pub then as you enter the bar is in the right hand section of the pub. Obviously popular for food. There were just 3 hand pumps in operation with a bit of a lean towards Marston's beer although my one new beer was a local guest. Dogs allowed in the gardens only.“

“This place has just been completely gutted and refitted in a slightly canned hipster/retro style. Painted floor boards, trendy bar and for some inexplicable reason there are old car seats as chairs. Bizarre! Anyway, it’s spacious, clean and has that new furniture smell that one of the group described as, "it smells like Ikea in here." Spotlessly clean, excellent bar service and the usual selection of McMullens beers and overpriced macro lagers. There was some interest from the presence of McMullens’ "Rivertown" branded beer. I had the Invictus on cask and their Pale Ale on keg. The former was a somewhat insipid English IPA and the latter was ok. Why can’t McMullens do good beers? I despair. Anyway, its ok, but there are much better places in Hertford if you want very good beer.“

“In the desert of coffee shops, hairdressers and charity shops that is the centre of Hertford, the oasis that are pubs provide much needed relief. A few are excellent, some are awful and some are just "good pubs." The Woolpack meets this last definition. It’s on a good location my the river, its spacious with a large bar and seems to do decent food. I was there with a gang of dads from the school and we were happily absorbed and had a good time. There were people eating fine looking burgers and there were many other groups both large and small. Excellent service at the bar and the whole place was clean and smart. The let-down is the beer, because it is a McMullens pub. The usual suspects were on cask, but I did notice Camden Town Pale Ale on keg. Otherwise it is the normal overpriced macro lagers. I stuck to the cask and it was, as ever for McMullens, ok, but nothing spectacular. If you want good beer in Hertford there are much better places and The Old Cross is still the benchmark.“

“Since the Old Cross Tavern pub was closed we ended up here and that was not bad at all. Admittedly the selection isn’t amazing but at least 5 McMullen casks that were ranging from okay to pretty good. Better yet, the lady was super friendly. When I told her I was into beer I got a taster of everything and she has a little news letter. The food (Chicken Burger and fries) was also very tasty and prices are very reasonable. So yeah, pretty good stop despite the small list of interesting beers.“

“What a great pub. In The Heart of Hertford. Even a lovely patio. Nice range of different ale.“

“Lovely smal cousy pub. For a tourist it was unfortunately a bit away from the train station. But that is probably ok for the locals :-) Recomendable place.“

“UPDATE Jan 2013 On a cold and snowy Friday night, I went in trepidation to see if there was any change from the previous report. The place has improved no end, and the previous review is therefore obsolete. Heating on throughout pub, friendly new owners, and well kept high quality beer, generally Fullers’, but with several guest beers as well. The owner even offered me a few samples to try - what a gent! I am happy to revise the previous [low] scores. PREVIOUS REVIEW........... This used to be the best pub in Hertford. Due to exorbitant demands of the tenants by the brewery [Fullers] the tenants have had to reduce service and raise prices so that once loyal customers [including myself] have just stopped going. The last time I went it was a cold night, well below zero, and to save a few bob, the heating was turned off. A customer put a log onto the fire and was chastised by the barstaff for doing so. The log was then removed. I witnessed fifteen or so customers leave after a single pint because of the cold. What a stupid way to run a pub. For the sake of a couple of quid, the pub lost a hundred or so worth of custom, including my gang, who just haven’t been back. A pity, as [let me repeat] this used to be the best pub in Hertford bar none. Fullers, hang your heads in shame! “

“A lovely pub. Knowledgeable staff who are helpful and there to both serve and give tasters and advice. A good range of local and other beers, with a couple generally low or low-mid priced for those who can’t afford exorbitant London prices. My only gripe would be that sometimes it can get too busy, and the standing room only can get extremely crowded, but it’s unfair to say that the owners be criticised for this.“

“Just superb. Timely pilgrimage on 19/8/09 with friends in a very enjoyable Hertford crawl. Unchanged since 2007; very friendly staff. Dark Star Hophead and Oscar Wilde Mild were exquisite; Very easy to simply settle in and enjoy relaxed conversation and equally difficult to leave. The best pub on our crawl and worthy of the high rating I awarded in 2007, which remains! You will NOT be disappointed. UPDATE 3 SEPTEMBER 2010. Excellent pint of OXTALE, and a beautiful Red Squirrel Colorado Ipa. This update is going on ’live’ while in the pub! I have upped my rating of both the pub and the homebrewed beer.“
