| 80 /100 12 BRIDGE ROAD “Formerly the Old Bridge Inn, it seems this split level pub has been given both a decent "lick of paint" and retained the old mirrors, furniture, adornments and character. The upper level has a few seats near the door and bar with a large dining area that would seat 100 covers comfortably. Behind a narrow bar there seems to be a snug, likely the old gents but probably the prime real estate in the pub with bright windows and a service hatch. The lower level can be accessed from the car park (which looks from the outside like someones house and kitchen) or a fairly steep set of stairs that resembled a fire exit. The ladies are at the top of this and the gents all the way downstairs near the car park door. There is also three worn and cheap public looking picnic tables near the river, not more than sixty seconds from the downstairs bar. Four cask pumps more upstairs than reflected downstairs. It looks like most of the downstairs has been extended on and is in stark contrast to upstairs. Selection wise, there were a Triforce of Sierra Nevada beers on keg, Kirkstall lager, Ska Pale Ale and a cider as well as a stand out font Euro Pilsner. Four ’guest’ cask pumps only had two pouring (Siren and Oakham though!) and three core Kirkstall fonts in the middle, with a random add on at the furthest end pouring a Prototype beer. There didn’t seem to be a bottle menu, but a glance of Oskar Blues, Ska, Sierra Nevada, Stone, Victory dominated over English fare. A solid selection with a lot of stuff not oft seen in most pubs of it’s ilk. Service was well handled on the main bar with one barman smoothly handling multiple orders and answering the phone whilst pouring/topping up cask orders either side of taking the next order. Not exceptionally fast, could have done with another staff member perhaps doubling up service of food and drink. Wasn’t terribly expensive and mark up on bottles seemed fairly reasonable, although I didn’t have any Kirkstall gear so I can’t comment on how much cheaper it is in contrast to non-Brewery Tap places in town. Worth a stroll out/bus back trip but not if you’re trying to fit a crawl in.“ |
