84 /100 4265 RICE ST This brewpub, located on the southeastern side of Kaua’i, is relatively unassuming from the outside, and frankly, from the inside as well. There is a wood-clad bar area with several tables, but the outdoor seating at picnic tables was a much better decision. We enjoyed a phenomenal Seared Ahi Steak sandwich, Kung Pao Brussels Sprouts and Okonomiyaki Fries. The beers were solid too, particularly the Tropical Armadillo and Jerry’s Rice Lager. |
70 /100 4265 RICE ST Nice place with good size L-shaped bar. I had a sampler flight of all 8. Service was average. Prices are reasonable. I really enjoyed a couple of their beers. |
66 /100 Hualani's (Restaurant) 3770 ALA OLI STREET, SUITE 2 Fancy restaurant and bar, facing a golf course, the ocean, and a lighthouse. Getting there is a challenge on foot. It is downstairs from the Timbers resort front office. There is parking, but it might be reserved or expensive. The bartenders were very friendly and efficient. They have four taps, all from the Kauai Island brewery. The food and cocktails looked fantastic. $8 for a pint is excessive. Great, fancy location, but not exactly a craft beer bar. |
64 /100 Duke’s Kauai (Bar) 3610 RICE ST Beautiful building right on the beachfront. There is public parking for beach access, or the hotel parking, both of which require a short walk. Great tiki bar vibe, with koi ponds, lava rock, and live music. The bartenders and waiters are friendly and quick, although the beer isn't their focus. Several interesting taps, but no seasonals or rarities, and nothing in cans or bottles. The food is fantastic. Highly recommended for the experience. |
60 /100 3610 RICE STREET Nice resort pool bar. Lots of open tables, a big bar, and good shade and fire pits. The bartenders are very friendly and enthusiastic, although they aren't exactly beer-centric, as one might expect. The four taps are all Kona (aka AB-Inbev) flagships, which is pretty weak, but they have a few choice cans hidden away. Naturally, the prices are absurd, but it's expected at a place like this. Fun spot for a drink in the sun. |
72 /100 Wine Garden (Beer Store) 4495 PUHI RD TINY shop in the newer area of Lihue. Only would've found it via RateBeer. Open on Sundays, good news. Stopped in and found some local gems I'd not seen elsewhere (other Hawaiian island brands), including the Imperial Coconut Porter my wife was dying to find ... score! Friendly guy. Prices were high, but it's Kauai. If you're staying for a while, stop by! |
70 /100 4265 RICE ST Previous reviews give accurate details. Located on one of the main drags in central Lihue, you'll be dependent on street parking, which didn't seem too bad. It's a great place to kill time after you land at the nearby airport, waiting until check-in time at your resort. We found the service quite friendly and prompt, the food very good. The beers were fairly decent, with a better list of options than you'll find in most places on the island. Prices weren't too bad for Kauai, either. Brewery #867. |
74 /100 4265 RICE ST Small place conveniently located a block from my AirBnB, funny that. In an old store front of some sort, looks like. A few sidewalk tables, then two complete rooms of restaurant tables, the first of which has a long L-shaped bar. Behind the bar you can see the brewhouse through glass. They are planning a second expansion to make a beer garden next door. Very lively atmosphere on a Wednesday night, so I'm sure it's even livelier on weekends - nice to see some nightlife on Kauai. Seven beers on offer, limited to flights of six by law, but once I finished those I tried number seven. The beers were so-so, but the NE IPA was very tasty. Food was tasty as well, fish tacos were tasty and filling. Jesse and Melinda provided exceptional service. Worth a stop, just don't expect too much from the beers - though they are much better than drinking InBev stuff! |
40 /100 3-2600 KAUMUALII HWY, KUKUI GROVE SHOPPING CENTER In a strip mall next to K-Mart, so there's plenty of parking. Corner place, small covered sidewalk patio. Large diagonal bar and some restaurant tables. Seemed a bit scruffy but that's OK. Sadly they've been taken over by ABInBev, those are the only beers they had on offer when I visited. I didn't stay for the food or the beer. |
72 /100 Wine Garden (Beer Store) 4495 PUHI RD This place is in a tiny strip mall next to a Filipino restaurant that seemed very popular. Plenty of parking. Owner for 14 years tries to stock interesting beers, and since the bars are completely dominated by InBev, that isn't hard. Nonetheless he has Orval, several Rocheforts, Westmalle, Lindeman's, Cascade and some Maui and Big Island beers, all at fairly reasonable prices. He also had meads from Nani Moon (local) and a couple of non-local (uninteresting) ciders. The man was pleasant and knew the beers extremely well. Easy stop on the way to or from Waimea Canyon, and not far from the airport. |
60 /100 Duke’s Kauai (Bar) 3610 RICE ST In the Marriott, so you can park at the hotel but then it's quite a hike (although a scenic one) through the gardens and past the lobby down to the beach. There might be some sort of parking closer to the beach, but I didn't check and it wasn't obvious. Jam packed at lunchtime on a Sunday because a cruise ship had just come in, and they had football on multiple TV. The place has two levels - top level is more of a restaurant and was closed when I stopped by. Bottom level is the Barefoot Bar, nice few of the beach and the beginner paddleboarders in the calm protected waters. They had four Konas on draft, a Laginitas, a Ballast Point and various InBev products. Service was attentive despite the throngs in tongs. Worth a short stop if in the area and you need to kill some time or grab a bite, or certainly if you're staying at this massive resort. |
90 /100 Wine Garden (Beer Store) 4495 PUHI RD Best place to find special beers on Kauai. |
70 /100 4265 RICE ST Small brewpubs located downtown in Lihue. Staff is very nice and quite knowledgeable about their beers. Prices are fair which is kind of surprising considering the cost of living. Quality of beer is hit or miss but makes for a nice change of scenery. |
76 /100 4265 RICE ST I really enjoyed this little pub. Not far from the airport or cruise port. Friendly staff and some tasty beers made this a great stop. Selection is not huge and there is a limited menu avilable. They do have a food truck after lunch. Still, I would come back. |
92 /100 4265 RICE ST What a great find this is. By and far this was my favorite craft beer place during my recent visit to Hawaii (close seconds...REAL in Honolulu & the new Maui Brewery in Kihei). I can’t say enough good things about this place...from the great beers and atmosphere...to the very friendly and helpful staff...to the absolutely fantastic food...this place scores high for me in every area. My favorite beer was the IPAloha...also liked the Black Limousine on nitro...and the "unnamed IPA" with Nelson Sauvin hops (there’s a name this beer contest going on...and I put in an entry...got my fingers crossed). I highly recommend a visit here when on Kauai (and anyone visiting Hawaii should be visiting Kauai anyway...beautiful scenery...friendliest people!). |
56 /100 4265 RICE ST Caught this place on its slim opening hours. OK, the beers aren’t much to get excited about, but they are putting out a little variety. Service was friendly. If I lived on Kauai I’d drink here. |
56 /100 Wine Garden (Beer Store) 4495 PUHI RD Echo what others say. More wine oriented. Some interesting European beers and some Unibroue. Otherwise Deschutes, Sierra Nevada, Belching Beaver, Lost Coast and some Hawaiian beers. Best you can do in Lihue and that is not saying much really.
PS--- Shop was a wreck and totally unorganized. |
66 /100 Wine Garden (Beer Store) 4495 PUHI RD Probably the best you’re gonna do on Kaua’i. A little bit better than the Wine Market in Princeville and Living Foods in Koloa, but not by a huge margin. Rochefort, Unibroue, Lost Coast, Orval, Big Island Brewhaus, etc. Very small, cramped arrangement...perhaps someday they’ll expand and move into a bigger shop. |
76 /100 4265 RICE ST Stopped by after a snorkel trip on Food Truck night, apparently the only night they have food available. Tried three beers between the two of us, all good. Especially liked the red. The place was super busy with mostly locals it seemed, so they have a good thing going on Thursdays. The food coming out of the food trucks looked great, and prices were what you would expect for Hawaii...the operation was well organized and beer prices were excellent. Only issue we had was that there was not an IPA of any sorts available. Spoke to one of the brewers and he said that it would be available in a couple of weeks. A must stop if you are here, and he also said that most other days are fairly calm as far as crowds go. |
90 /100 4265 RICE ST Great place to get really good beer in Lihue. |
84 /100 4265 RICE ST Here on vacation. They are opened on a very limited schedule. I think it may be 3 days a week now. Brewer was at the bar pouring drinks, I love that. He politely answered all our questions and is passionate about the beer and Hawaii. They are committed to helping the carbon footprint of Hawaii - one way was the choice of growler, stainless steel (I think) vs. glass. Nice selection on site and food truck day is a plus though they don’t yet serve their own food. Props to Bob for finding this place. |
80 /100 Wine Garden (Beer Store) 4495 PUHI RD If you’re in Kauai, this is the place to buy beer. It’s a tiny store across the highway from Kauai College, but they had a good selection of beers. Plus the owner was very friendly & helpful. |
64 /100 Wine Garden (Beer Store) 4495 PUHI RD (Visited 12/2010): Spotted this place across the street from the gas station where we were refilling our rental car during a stop in Kuai on our cruise vacation.
The shop is located on Puhi Road in Lihue just off the Kaumualii highway. There is a small lot in front of the mini plaza.
The interior is relatively small and caters primarily to wine sales, but they also stock cigars and have a bit of space devoted to beer (and craft sodas!). The beer section is in the rear of the store.
As for the craft beers there are a few worthwhile ones stocked, such as Maui, North Coast, Sierra Nevada, John Barleycorn, Rogue etc. There are also some imports like Chimay, Orval, Westmalle and Lindemans.
Service on a weekday afternoon was very friendly. While the store obviously leans toward wine, the gentleman running the place was happy to chat about the beers and was personable.
Overall this is the only place we spotted on our visit to the island that looked promising and we were glad we stopped in. Definitely a good place to hit for some craft brews. |
