“flight of 4x2oz for $9. 8 ciders on tap. Variety of fruit flavors and regular ciders, and a barrel aged one as well. Down a country road. Basically in the back yard of someone’s house. Very comfortable feel. Pints $9, growlers $25. 3 12oz bottles to go. Overall 3.9.“

“Nice brewery/taproom in downtown Morgan Hill. Maybe 14 beers on tap. Not interesting selection: no sours, no hazies, no BA beers. like an old school brewpub with 5% standard beers: porter, pale ale, etc. still a nice place to visit. 6 tasters for $14. close to Running shop, which is awesome.“

“Wow. This place is crazy good. 40 beers on tap. 10 coolers of beers with many sours and barrel aged beers. Right beside a nice bike shop. $4 for 5oz pours. Humble sea in a can, which is hard to find in San Jose. Excellent!“

“Dinner stop on Thursday. Main drag in Morgan Hill, which means parking is a bit of a challenge. There are public lots nearby however, and street parking can be had if you are willing to walk a couple three blocks. Definitely smells like the rest of the chain. Fairly small inside, some tables out front as well. Small bar in the back with taplist overhead. This place actually has table service, which is a bit different. Taplist is a little more sparse than some of the other locations as well. BBQ selections are about the same. Brisket is not on the menu per se, but is the special like three nights a week, which is good, ’cause their brisket is quite tasty. Service was attentive and good. No complaints. At this point I think I have been to all but the one down in Salinas.“

When I heard that this place was owned by the same people that own Aptos St BBQ in Aptos I decided that I had to stop in. The side story is that there are three brothers that own a total of five BBQ places with good beer with the fifth one slated to open very soon. Sadly this location doesn’t have the live music and the extensive beer selection like the one in Aptos but it’s pretty good and it’s in quaint little Morgan Hill. Actually, as it turns out Morgan Hill isn’t so quaint anymore. I sat next to a realtor that told me that the average house value in Morgan Hill is over 500K. What the hell? I thought the point of living way out in Morgan Hill was to live cheaply and commute to San Jose. Guess not.

The beer list is decent. I went with a Union Jack but they had a few other IPAs and some interesting California-made beers on tap plus a few Bruery bottles and some Lagunitas bottles in the fridge. The food menu is slightly different from the one in Aptos in that the food is about the same but the names are different. I was talked into a tri tip sandwich which was good but as always a bit dry. I think I’m officially done ordering tri tip if it’s going to be sliced thin. Give me the slab any day, so long as it’s cooked right (red in the middle), but the strips are getting old. Instead order the BBQ beef which is cubed, cooked in sauce, and heavily smoked. Naturally I got the beans as my side which were heavily spiced and decent.

I stayed for the remainder of the Niner game, packed up half my sandwich, and hit the road. The service was very friendly and I could see hanging out here if I lived locally but as it’s not local for me I’ll be stopping in for BBQ and leaving. I also need to visit the other three locations (Mission Street BBQ in Santa Cruz, BBQ 152 in Gilroy (near Hwy 152, get it?), and the new one opening in Salinas).“

This is one of two liquor stores that has any decent beer (that I know of) in a 20 mile radius. It’s kind of a shame really. This is a pretty standard Trader Joes by all accounts. Same over priced food, same small but decent beer selection (though some of the beers might have been a bit old), same weird setup at the check stands where you really dont have room to put down your groceries. The good news is that you can find Chimay, Stone, Bear Republic, Sierra Nevada, and Mendocino here in addition to the house brands like the Unibroue-Trader Joes Vintage Ale. Service was friendly enough but I didn’t stick around to ask if they actually know anything about beer or not. If you’re in the area and need a quick six pack stop in but if you’re just passing through wait until you’re in the bay area.“
