I live in the Bay Area and did not see much here I wouldn't see at a half-decent grocery store. Not offensively bad, but I would buy bottles at Libertine.“ |
| 82 /100 801 EMBARCADERO “Tough to review places visited during the time of COVID. Anyways, visited in June, 2020, around 4:00 PM. Pretty empty, around 16 drafts, 4 of which were theirs. There is also a back bar which is open on weekends during COVID but wasn't when I was there.
These guys do sours. Some interesting sours, but if you go here looking for their stuff, you're looking for sours. They have their own bottles as well as some bigger craft bottles. I left with a bunch of vintages of Firestone Walker (which is pretty local) that I hadn't seen. The whole thing works out to a very good beer bar, and the view is really tough to beat (the volcanic plug was pretty damn majestic).“ |

Bit dark and interior could use some renovation since it feels a bit like dive bar. 14 taps in the restaurant and 21 more in the bar which had quite a few Bruery beers on tap since they had tap takeover couple of days earlier. Beers were nice. Also some bottles, but very high prices on those. Food was OK. Worth visiting.“ |

A really good draft list, which is a mix of own brew, though not brewed on site anymore, and guest taps. But the prices are ridiculous of their tasters, higher than in Copenhagen, and twice the price of all other places I visited in California“ |

I had several of their own Libertine sour beers, which were really nice. And, Deschutes The Abyss on tap! How to describe the bar? Read what thome50 says. I stayed in the front bar enjoying 20 taps and ZZ Top’s LP "Eliminator" The back bar was larger, with 28 taps, live music and people dancing, and much more crowded. Great views? | 82 /100 801 EMBARCADERO “This is a goofy place. At least a couple different bar/seating/restaurant areas. We sat in the dining area right over the water, which was quite neat. There’s another area right off the street, but apparently homeboy that was supposed to work that area didn’t show for work, so that part was closed during our visit.
In this particular part, they have 20-some beers on tap including four house offerings. Another 20 or so in the closed off area. They do flights of four of all the beers on the menu. Neat. Food is kind of your typical bar stuff, though maybe a little on the pricey side? Didn’t eat here, though. Just tried some SLO County Wild Ales, bro. And some SLO County non-wild ales. The house beers were actually pretty good. Good service here, even though they were quite understaffed and the place filled up pretty quickly. My first ever visit to Morro Bay, which seems like a neat little town. And this place being here might necessitate a return trip at some point.“ |
| 88 /100 801 EMBARCADERO “They have a rather odd set up going but it works in the end. There are three different areas to hang out. The front bar along the Embarcadero where you can do some people watching as tourists pass by. There are 20 taps on this side. Then you can either go through the passageway that goes by the kitchen and bathrooms and check out the back bar which is right on the water. Great views. 28 beers on tap here. Then there is an upstairs area with a couple pool tables, an old arcade game, a broken air hockey table. Seems very underutilized. Great views and you can sit in peace.
The problem is with the bar being broken up between the two front and back bars you can’t close out your tab at either though you can order at both and they go to your bill.
The tap list is almost always very diverse and you can find something you’ll enjoy. They are more than happy to give you a sample of this or that. They do flights of four, 4oz pours of most anything on the board.
They are fully up and running in terms of brewing. They have a coolship etc right when you walk into the back bar. Only brewing sours which is nice since the area doesn’t have a lot of breweries doing this. They have started bottling their own beers too for their reserve society. Solid so far.
Food is hit or miss. The chili is advertised on the menu as being spicy hot. They don’t do anything crazy like make you sign a waiver etc but they weren’t kidding. The spiciest commercial chili I’ve ever had and I love/can handle pretty much any spice level. It was hard to finish. The salmon salad was good as are the fried pickles and standard pub food.
Prices are a little high in my opinion for the beers. Most everything is either $6 or $7 for an appropriate pour. It is a tourist area so it isn’t that unheard of. They have a happy hour in the afternoon most days that drops the prices by a buck.
Overall, I love what they are doing and I think some of the issues I have with the service area will get cleared up. Looking forward to all of their brewing efforts going forward.“ |

| 88 /100 801 EMBARCADERO “Finally got around to checking out The Libertine Pub after hearing so much about it. There are 3 sections to this place, the main restaurant, the back bar and the upstairs hang out spot. Restaurant side has around 15 taps, and its where they host all of the barrels for their own wild beer. The back bar has another 20 or so taps with wrap around bar top, stools and some separate seating area facing the street. The upstairs area is pretty secluded with more tables, a dart board, foosball and pool table. The view of the ocean and Morro Rock is just stunning. Beer selection ranges from session-able, west coast IPAs, good local selection, a few sours and barrel aged offerings. Lot’s of bottles for sale too, but I didn’t check out the list. Very impressive. Ordered their own Flanders style beer and La Folie for comparison. Food was classic pub style with the standard soup, salad, fish and chips offerings, but also fun appetizers and a monster Fish and Chips Burrito that is also deep fried. Crazy delicious, but on the pricey end up the spectrum. Waitress and bartenders were very friendly, but sometimes got caught up in doing behind the scenes stuff before being able to help out. According to the brewers at Central Coast Brewing, they have been donating surplus beer and wort to the Pub to start more souring projects. As far as I could tell they have Blueberry, Persimmon, and blackberry sours coming, as well as experimental sours using Cantillon and 3F yeast. Pretty cool place for a beer, and a date!“ |

Their list turns over with regularity. So many of the beers they offer are in bombers or 750ml bottles that you’re not going to get off very cheap. But, just park yourself in the bay window and experience the serenity of being in a familiar place, even if you’ve never been there before.“ |

Didnt know this place existed until I stopped in at Paso Robles Brewing / Pour House. There was a guy there from the Celebrator that was "checking up" on the local breweries. He mentioned some of the smaller breweries along 101, more or less testing me to see what I knew. I mentioned that we were going to Cambria to finally check them out and were going to head south and back to 101 skipping over Atascadero (Molly Pitchers) and Santa Margarita (Dunbar) on this trip. He mentioned that if we go through Morro Bay we should check out The Libertine as they are brewing their own beers. I also asked what ever happened to Morro Bay Brewing and he informed me that the people at Pismo Brewing bought the equipment. This place is right on the water, which is great. They have 20 taps of quality beers (Drakes Jolly Rodger, Stone Enjoy By, Firestone Double Jack, Ballast Point Palate Wrecker, and a few non-hoppy beers), a selection of bottles that I mostly ignored, and some good smelling food. Thats all great however I came to try these beers he’s making. He said they didnt have any and they only make VERY small batches. He wouldnt elaborate beyond that. I’m now curious if he’s actually a brewery at all or if he’s just occasionally serving homebrew batches. The guy from the Celebrator said that eventually they’re going to move to expand brewing or at least set up a separate brewery somewhere in town. Hmm. On a side note, just a block up the hill is the old Morro Bay Brewing Company. It’s now a pizza joint but there is a sign still on the outside of the building that mentions it. If you’re looking for new beers this may not be the the place for you but if you find yourself in Morro Bay this place is a great place to get a drink and hang out. Also, if you need another checkin or place rating it’s easily walking distance from Bottle Liquor.“ |

After a success at Paul’s Liquor I though what the hey, maybe Bottle Liquor will also be a diamond in the rough. It wasn’t bad but not amazing by any means. They do have a large selection so they have that going for them. They also have some good looking food at the deli counter and their location in Morro Bay. Realistically they probably don’t have a lot to work with in terms of distribution but I guess what they have isn’t bad and they probably do a reasonable job of turning the locals onto better beer. I guess I’m just spoiled and don’t remember what it was like to be amazed to find Chimay at a store. On to the real review. Most the CA regulars are here as are the locals (Tap It and Figueroa Mountain) and some imports but they seem more focused on the California beers than the imports. Probably for the best. Prices are reasonable. The employees are happy to talk but only some of them know anything about the beer. Plenty of parking and right around the corner from what will likely become Morro Bay’s newest brewery (The Libertine).“ |
