| 62 /100 Bridge Street Ale House (Bar) 31 BRIDGE STREET “Traditional micro-pub situated opposite Hopwater Cellar. Very much an old-style CAMRA ale-house with gravity casks, handpull and box cider in the window, plus a good rum selection. Unusual for this type of place flights of thirds can be ordered. Cosy and welcoming feel, though with carpetted floors and the toilet situated through a staff kitchen area, and no music, it does feel a bit like you're sat in someone's house. Lots of new microbreweries for me. Worth a stop.“ |
| 86 /100 Hopwater Cellar (Beer Store) 2 BRIDGE STREET “Excellent bottle shop and bar which seems to have one foot in old style real ale and one foot in modern craft. Staffed by the cheery owner who seemed to be chatting, recommending and offering advice for the duration of my visit to various new groups. Two keg beers and one cask on draft. Exceptional selection of bottled beers covering all bases from Samichlaus to 75cl Rogues, key Belgian classics such as Cuvee van de Keiser Blaue and a sizeable German bottle selection. All laid out according to country with some Swiss, Spanish and Estonian beers getting a look-in. Two tall double fridges with lots of craft cans. Lots of local real ale bottles. A decent cider selection, some local, some Spanish. Definitely get the impression the breweries have been purposely chosen by someone who knows his stuff. The seating area takes up two opposite corners of the shop either side of the bar with room for about 20. I'd say this is up there with the best in the region.“ |

A small selection of beers to drink in and takeaway on the shelves and in fridges behind the bar. The staff are friendly but more knowledgable about the gins, with the range on the shelves behind the bar is impressive. Only visited in the day myself.“ |

Great service, friendly clientele and always a good atmosphere.

It’s a nice little place, actually bigger than you think with another couple of rooms out the back, each connected to the main bar. You do feel that if a couple of walls were knocked down it could create a bit more space, but then I guess they add to its character. I think 5 keg beers, all buzz craft such as Verdant, Kernel and Odyssey, with a solid cask selection, even though it seemed everyone in here was just ordering Oakham Citra. The husband and wife team behind this place were in good spirits and friendly with clientele. This was the most recommended pub on our little crawl of the area, and definitely the busiest. For good reason too.“ |

Fairly smart decor, had the feel that it had been designed by a design-conscious woman rather than a beardy craft beer hipster, and indeed although there is a small selection of Belgian beer adorning the shelves as you enter, and a few taps built into white tiles on the walls, it seems to attract the smart-dressed gin, prosecco, wine and cocktail crowd rather than beer drinkers, at least judging by the other customers here this evening. That said, there were some decent cans / bottles in the fridge and about 8 keg lines including Abbeydale, Beavertown and Kernel. Add in some ’posh’ crisps and chorizo and it’s a pleasant stop off.“ |

Very nicely laid out, very good selections of beers from around the world which will no doubt progress with time. 2 key keg taps and directly opposite Bridge Street Ale House micro pub. There’s a good selection of bars and pubs in this small section of ’castle. Well worth a visit.“ |

Nicely done, the knowledge of the staff leaves a little to be desired, they have their own German lager but don’t know where it’s brewed! Barman had the charisma of a beer crate. Prices are strange £2.50 for a half of Rodenbach which is OK but the same price for Abbeydale and Navigation lagers is ridiculous. 9 keg taps and a reasonable selection of bottles. Handy on a crawl round ’castle.“ |

They only have a 4 pumps on but they rotate the selection regulary so there’s always something new to try. Bar staff are very friendly and were happy to recommend other places to go to when they were shutting. Only a small place though so can feel crowded at times.“ |

The bar staff were friendly. If you head up this way be sure to go to the hopinn and Greyhound as well.“ |

The beer selection is mainly titanic (The plum porter is superb) and a few guest ales along with a small bottle selection. The landlord is friendly and had a nice chat with him about the beers the last time we made the trip. I can’t wait to get back.“ |

The bar is to the right as you walk in but you feel like you’re standing at the bar as the pumps are on the wall. Intimate interior in the front room with high seats and tables. I did not venture into the back which is more traditional seating with tables. Well worth a visit. Beers in good nick and unusual for this area.“ |

Plenty of choice and usually from the better breweries like Mallinsons, Hopcraft, Fyne Ales etc.
Definitely worth a visit and must be a contender for local pub of the year at the next awards.“ |

It overlooks a small but attractive and well kept park on the edge of the commercial centre amongst some large period buildings. It occupies one of these buildings itself but has a smaller than expected area, basically two large rooms either side of the central bar that both look out on to the park. There is a terrace that runs along the length of the building which also looks out onto the public space so this is a fantastic place to drink if the weather allows. The bars serves two rows of ales on pumps.“ |
