“13 beers plus a hard seltzer on tap. Easy parking on a Friday night. Sort of in a strip mall beside the coast south of Oceanside. Nice food truck. Beers are super bland. Not a fan, but location is cool. 3.6“

“Dropped by on chance on a SoCal brewery tour. Very conveniently located on the Main Street from Carlsbad to Oceanside. Smells fantastic inside: like freshly smoked barbecue. Beers are pretty good too. Above average. Well made in general. Easy parking. Fantastic food. 5oz tasters are $3-4.“

“Visited March 2023. Had a moment of deja vu as we pulled up since this used to be Mason/Urge. The place is laid out much the same with dining to the left and the big bar area to the right when you enter. The decor has obviously changed a fair bit, as has the food. The focus here is obviously BBQ. They offer a lot of more refined options than just a typical BBQ joint, like salads, tacos, nachos, etc. They have cocktails, wine, and of their house beers. We were on our way to a friend's house for dinner, so we didn't eat but the food looked good although quite expensive. A decent variety on the beer list, but more IPAs than anything as is tradition these days. I opted for a half pint each of an Italian pils and an altbier. Both were fine--nothing amazing. I'd be curious to come back for a meal and another beer or two, but the beer didn't blow me away so much that I'm rushing to go back.“

“Visited with my wife on the evening of Tuesday 26th March 2019. The busiest place we came across while in Oceanside for the three days/two nights we stayed; the locals appear to have taken to this place. We arrival at around eight and had to sit at the bar as every table was taken. Young ladies serving, a young surfer dude doing the cocktails and pouring the beers. Nice welcoming vibe to the place, I had two pints, both new rates, the wife a couple of wines. We also shared a turkey sandwich with fries, it was very good. Sports screen and plenty of conversation gave the joint a vibrant, friendly feel.“

“Visited with my wife late afternoon on Tuesday 26th March 2019. Walked here from Bagby's, it must be 60 yards away. It opened at 16:30 and we arrival fifteen minutes later and it was beginning to fill up. Happy Hour didn't seem to cover much; three taps, three wines and a bit of food. Didn't seem to worry anybody though. I had two pints the wife two glasses of wine, everything was on the Happy Hour list and cost $5:75 each (plus Tax and Tip). Service was good, vibe was good, drinks were good. We liked the dark, semi-dive bar feel of the place and the customers were the polar opposite to Bagby's clientele. We sat on the patio initially, enjoying the dying embers of the sun but had to move inside as the sun fell and it became a little cooler. It's a nice 'foil' to the up market Bagby's, which is almost next door.“

“Visited with the wife mid-evening on Monday 25th March 2019. Liked the laid back vibe of the place, the staff friendly and attentive without 'bugging you'. Outside patio on the roadside, fairly dark inside with a few sports screens dotted about. 1970's music, but not too loud. Decent tap selection with 28 available, we tried seven half-pints (all new rates) between us and all seemed fine. We also shared a salad bowl and it was delicious. Oceanside is getting more 'up market' and it's bars like this that are helping to bring it level with it's neighbours Carlsbad to the South and San Clemente to the North.“

“Visited early evening on Monday 25th March 2019. No signage on the outside of the black painted oblong box building it sits in (on a parking area for a shopping block). Luckily I saw the fermenting vessels through a large open window and realized it was the place we were looking for. Open plan with the brewing equipment in full view, the bar being on the back wall as you walk in. 12 taps of their beers on, we had a taster of everyone (two flights of five and two extras at the end). The guy fronting the place is local but has worked at the Camden BrewDog pub in London. Beers were fine with a decent choice of styles. Usually there is a Thai food counter, but on Mondays they don't open and the bar has 'All you can eat Pizza' for $5:00 a person at 18:00. We had already eaten so didn't play, looked good though and everyone else seemed to be tucking into the various huge boxes of Pizza and feeding their children. Nice friendly vibe to the place and well worth the stroll out from the coastal front and the Pacific Coastal Highway that cuts through Oceanside.“

“Visited with my wife on Monday 25th March 2019, at 13:00. Very impressed with the concept and layout of the place. It's part of a chain I believe (saw one down the road in Carlsbad), anyway it's fun to pour your own beers and with 48 taps a great way to rate numerous beers without drinking too much. We had nine different ones between us. The place is fairly new, clean, tidy and the staff were friendly. The beers came from mostly Californian breweries and all ours were fresh and in good condition (as far as we could tell). The Burger and Fries are on special all day on Mondays and we really enjoyed those too. Very easy to get carried away in such a place and I would recommend checking when 'Happy Hour' is if you intend to hit as many beers as you want too, otherwise your money doesn't go very far.“

“Came here on 24.01.2019. Located 5 miles off Oceanside center in an industrial area, very close to the Legacy brewery and not far away from the airport. Very small brewpub with the brewhouse to the left, a small bar without seating in the center. One high wooden table with a large chessboard and a few more games in the back. 18 beers on tap. Had the Hair of the Dog a dark dry hopped American Ale, which was just ok. Ben would have enjoyed the colorful paintings decorating this brewpub.“

“Came here on 24.1.2019. Located a few streets off the Oceanside beach in a strip mall area. A lot of parking available in front of the brewpub. Brewery and bar in one building and separated only by a small wall, hence you have a good visibility of the small brewhouse. Long wooden bar and a separate food counter to the left. 10 beers on tap. Had a Cream Ale, which was absolutely ok. Overall a mediocre place considering you are in the San Diego area.“

“Came here on 28.11.2018. This is at least my 3rd Bealching Beaver place I have visited and it is always the same. Like their beers but at the same time I am not a big fan of the service people in their locations. They just seem to be arrogant. This location has a lot of wooden barrel stock and a huge amount of can pallets. You can think about Belching Beaver what ever you like, but their Peanut Butter Stout is the best and always a reason to visit.“

“Visited my first US self service beer bar on 28.11.2018 in Oceanside CA (my first one was Jacky’s beer nest in Shanghai). A really good concept. Ben would love it! You pay by volume, which you pour yourself. You can taste as much as you like before you go for a full pour. Each beer has a digital display explaining the details of the beer. Really great selection of pale ales, lagers, darks and sours. Interior was nice too, a lot of wood. Apparently they have a place in San Diego as well. Great addition to Oceanside’s beer scene. Will come back for sure !“

“I was looking for some great Stone beers to go, but the selection of beers in the fridge was quite limited. They only sell the cans and 12oz bottles in six packs, and they have some bombers as well. They surely have some shirts and other merchandise available as well. The tap selection was quite nice but I wasn't able to enjoy it this time. Nice patio. Hopefully next time.“

“Big place right off the main drag in Oceanside. They were open early, which is why we went. Big bar and ample table seating (we sat at the bar). Cute friendly waitress. Prices on beers a bit high. Decent selection, though nothing outstanding. No flights or taster sizes, but they did do half pints.“

“Located right on the 101, but in the middle of Oceanside town centre, just blocks from the Pacific Ocean, and a few blocks from Bagby. Fairly compact tasting room, with a separate kitchen area (they specialize in pizzas) and bar area next to it. Tons of beers on tap. You can do a flight of 6 x 3 oz. pours for $7, or 4 x 5 oz. pours for a little more -- awesome options for tickers. The beer itself is very solid, with lots of good hoppy options and a couple nice sours. Service was nonchalant, but prompt. Recommended.“

“A pretty expansive place tucked away deep within an industrial park. Tasting room is rather grungy feeling, but they have plenty of seating and an outside area. Over a dozen beers on tap, including 4 sours when I went. Flights of 4 available for a very good price. But they serve them in shitty little plastic cups -- c’mon now, this isn’t acceptable. Beers were pretty good, though the plasticware doesn’t showcase them well. Friendly service. I enjoyed my visit despite my gripe.“

“Pretty cool place tucked in the back of a commercial strip mall. The place is rather small, and is very homey, with a couch on one end closest to the entrance. They had 8 meads (one being a blend at the tap) and a kombucha-ich type of drink on tap. You can order flights of 4 x 2 oz. for $9, or single 2 oz. pours for $4, which is rather pricey. Service is extremely friendly and prompt, and passionate about the product. Unfortunately, I wasn’t overly impressed with the meads, other than the California Oak, which was very good. Nice to mix in some meads though along with a brewery crawl, so I’d recommend on that ground. Cool spot.“

“This location is a nice garden spot just off Pacific Hwy in Oceanside. At first I did not notice the place but the iron gargoyle gates finally attracted my attention. Once inside the garden I quickly found the taproom and ordered a beer (or two or three). Lucky for me they had just put out a 12-pack of 2004 Old Guardian. I grabbed a bottle to-go (now wishing I had grabbed more) and was on my way. The service was fine and prices quite reasonable for a 12-year old barleywine.“

“What a gem. I took my dog 2 the dog park and when we were done I looked up local breweries and didn’t know this place existed? At first I didn’t know whether they actually serve beer there, after walking through the door I was absolutely floored it was like walking into a whole nother world! This place is absolutely gorgeous inside. Even better there were other dogs there so me and my dog to chill out on the huge patio. Okay let’s try the beer? 20 beers on tap! I started off with their Flagship "corps" IPA, awesome IPA had body and awesome hop flavor. They had a huge projection screen with football playing, they were serving Sushi which was off the chain! I called a couple of my friends that live in Oceanside and they didn’t know about this place either so they came and we watched the football game together and had 18 tasters on a super cool flight thingy that looks like a huge airplane bomber, one of my friends noticed there were skydivers coming down everywhere I made the connection they’re right next to the Oceanside airport LOL. Long story short we couldn’t believe a place we’ve never heard of could make all these delicious beers so we went inside to pay our Tab and talk to the bartender he was super knowledgeable and explained that the owners insist on all the employees being involved in the brew process and learning about beer styles! Super impressed! Stand outs include "man beer " Scottish strong ale, "commander &chief" Imperial IPA I usually come to San Diego once a year from now on this will be my first stop this is what craft beer is all about I wish everybody took beer this seriously! Cheers “

“Visited August 27, 2016.

Made it here just in the nick of time. Actually we walked in 2 minutes after closing but since there were still people there playing corn hole they let us order a couple flights. This is an impressive facility. Up front is a tasting bar with a wall that obscures the view of the 100 bbl fermenters in the back. The one wall is covered with a bunch of barrels. The bartender was nice and gave us a flight and a couple free tasters despite being closed already. They also have some bottles for sale here. At the time they had sour raspberry beer for sale.

There were two screens worth of taps rotating on the screen. A lot of what they had were variants of the regular beers. There was a mango variant on the IPA, their saison with pink peppercorns, and several different Berliners. Most of it was pretty good. Maybe not something I’d buy cases of but most of it I’d be OK with having a pint of. Speaking of, the pints are $5 each and the tasters are 2oz each. Sounds about right.

I’d come back here if in the area but these days I don’t have much interest in revisiting any of the other breweries in the immediate area (Midnight Jack, Gold Coast Meadery, and Oceanside Ale Works). Realistically I’ll be back to the new restaurant or the one on 30th before I come back here.“

“Visited August 27, 2016.

Last stop of the night, minus the quick check in at Pizza Port San Clemente for Star Wars night. I was scared to come here to be honest. I worried that the proximity to Legacy might mean that the crappiness spread from one facility to another. Well as it turns out I wasn’t too far off. Nice people and interesting setup but this beer is barely drinkable. More on that in a minute. They have a LOT of taps going, 18 house beers. There was a chess board on the counter and some really neat taster trays made of wood to look like various airplanes (a tribute to the airport next door I’m sure). The brewing system itself is pretty small, like 3-5 bbl. Lots of merchandise on the walls and there is a patio in the back with some picnic benches. There was a birthday party going so I hung out with them for a bit and listened to stories of getting in random fights at bars. Classy group. Nice enough though. Not sure if they do live music here but they certainly have room for it in the back.

The beers were homebrew quality at best. Most had a clever name like OPA (Oceanside Pale Ale), Extra Special Badass, and Stairway to Hefe-en. Some seemed like they forced a beer to match a funny name, like the Extra Special Blueberry and Hop Save The Queen. None of what we tried was worth ordering another of, or even paying for for that matter. And if you’re really brave, really drunk, really stupid, or some combination of the three you can order a kamikaze, which is where they mix everything together for $11. Yeah, no.

Prices were high ($3 per taster), the beer is best described by their imperial stout: Imperial Disaster , but over all friendly enough. If you have an iron stomach you can get a good 30 ticks between this place and Legacy. Me, one visit was enough.

Note: this is one of those places where I have to use the Overall score to show just how bad the beers are, since each of the other categories on its own doesn’t reflect how painful it is.“

“Highway 101 is littered with small businesses, just blocks off the Pacific Ocean and Breakwater fits right in with the surfer/skateboarder vibe. While the music changed from Reggae to Classic Rock as the bar tenders changed shifts, I wondered why there was no beach/surfer music or punk/ska. The service is place your order at the bar and then seat yourself and has a similar feel to several Pizza Port locations, though the food is better at the latter. I enjoyed a couple pints and some wings before leaving, and it is nice to see guest drafts alongside the house brewed beers. A decent enough stop but somewhat forgettable in our San Diego beer oasis.“

“Went here with GT2, DTF, biggirlpanties, and ChinoSkillzian one fine evening after hitting up Dani P’s. Didn’t realize it was rateable until I saw GT’s rating.

This is pretty much a dive bar and burger place with a decent number of beers. The beers are pretty much your typical staples in San Diego, though, so nothing to really get too worked up about. They have stuff like Port, Stone, Belching Beaver, Green Flash, Ballast Point, etc. Cheapish, at least, and good service.“

“Pleasant afternoon session on 26th May 2015. Hidden away but found with ease (research helps of course). Small barn/large shed: you decide. Bar to your right on entering: flights available. Almost bought the dog biscuits thinking they were ’cheese straws’ such was the light difference on entering the place. Friendly two behind the bar, nice customers out in the rustic, designer rust garden area. Patio heaters were there but not needed during our little time there. Only Stone stuff I think: that is what we had anyway. Bottles, shirts and refills. beer quality excellent. One gripe: why no plain packets of crisps/chips? When I am tasting flavoursome, wonderful beers the last thing I want is Jalapeño heated nuts or hot Beef Jerky: which was the food options, crazy.“

“Re-visited on 27th March 2019. Better service and the place is brighter (like Oceanside in general). Moved my scores higher, again our Flight was good and the food very pleasant, keeping the old write up as well though, it starts now: Visited early evening of 26th May 2015. Long thin room with food counter before the bar. Surfer Dude vibe with a US Marine Corps clientele (the huge Camp Pendleton main gate is only a mile away). My house beer six glass flight was lovely, the starter combo plate was good, although the hot sauce on the wings was over the top and too spicy for beer tasting duties. Basic design and wooden furniture: smart and modern it is not, clean, tidy and friendly it is. Only down side was the food waitress, slow uninterested and lazy: barman was fine.“

“We capped a day spent around Oceanside with a sun soaked walk to Breakwater Brewing (from Bagby’s), and filed into to the thin and comfortable restaurant. It’s definitely a casual affair, with a little surfer rock theme, less polish and more beer. I love the little touches like the two player Pac Man machine, one of those horrible mini-game touch screen machines, and a gruffer looking clientele. But the beer here is pretty high class. For our visit there were more than a few barrel aged beers, the iconic Kalifornia Kush, and even a goze. Most were good, one or two were great, and all were surprisingly fancy styles given the atmosphere. We arrived with full bellies and skipped the menus, but eyeing our neighbors plates it was clear that the food makes a good pairing too. But I think the quality to stress here is in spite of an interior that doesn’t fit the current trend of raw lightbulbs and IKEA style threadbare walls, they’re dishing out quality beers served without pretension in a beautiful sun drenched part of the California coast.“
