“Small patio outside a small-ish brewpub next to the river. Beers were of really good quality, with a very modern leaning selection. Staff were good. Several local takeout places will deliver to your table. Worth a visit.“

“Comfy local pub vibe. Beers were a large selection of primarily Orono Brewing. Food was large portions and very tasty. Staff friendly. Good place.“

“A bit of a ragged lodge feel. Not bad but just a little more on the dive side. Service was great. Beers ranged from mediocre to better than average. Nothing special but a nice place for a brew.“

“Small taproom walkable to many other spots. Brightly lit interior with natural wood. Art for sale on the walls. Service was quick and friendly. There were only a couple other people in when we were there but to be fair it was -5 degrees out so sane people stayed at home. Beers were tasty and available in multiple sizes. Nice place.“

“DO NOT GO HERE!!! They took my money, paid for the whole night and they refused to refund me after politely asking 7 times for my money back after leaving. They knowingly rips people off for profit to stay in business. The Bear Brew is a rip off and not worth a cent out of your wallet.“

“Beer: Bar and grill with a fair selection of the standard beers on tap, but they additionally have a few rotating specialty brews from Rogue, Atlantic Brewing Co, Stone and Black Bear Microbrew, etc. Food: Really good burgers, especially the Woodman’s burger. Music: Not uncommon for live music to play as the weekends approach, especially during the semester.“

“Popped by here on a Friday night to hunt for some Maine micros and other rarities. I found most of what I was looking for, but had to wade through a throng of college students with armloads of Keystone Light and Coors. The staff occasionally mocked these kids but were probably making a buttload of money off them. Anyways, my timing could have been better. The store is quite small with narrow isles and stock stacked quiet high. It has a very run-down-convenience store feel with a worn floor, unfinished surfaces and beer posters/lights everywhere. That being said, they make the most of the space. Lots of hard liquor and wine. A great selection of US craft brews like Stone, Rogue and Dogfish with many local and regional selections as well. Got some Allagash and DFH for my trouble. Staff was knowledgeable about their stock and beer in general and helpfully provided me a box to carry my treasures. Not a huge number of imports here, but the was on tightly packed shelve. Lots of generic macro cases in a couple of coolers for the college crowd. Overall, a bit out of the way from Bangor proper, but you might score something good for your trouble.“

“The beer selection is adequate here. I was disappointed when I could not find many imported beers I’ve come to expect at specialty stores but they have a descent amount of everything. More importantly they have a great liquor selection. It is the only place I know of in Maine, other than RSVP in Portland, where one can find an extensive single malt selection, or anything beyond the basic agency store selection. Also they have better hours than any specialty beer/wine/spirits store I’ve ever seen. You can get a keg until 11:30 PM on a Saturday night. They also keep sub premium kegs in store(you don’t have to order a keg of Rolling Rock or Natural Light, they’ve got it in stock) All in all, not the best place to find your favorite beer, but an excellent liquor store in all other regards.“

“My first choice in the Orono/Bangor area. Lots of choices and the owner is very willing to track down beers and stock them. Variety is perhaps greater then downstairs at Burby and Bates, more world beer here. There is a very small amount of homebrew stuff but it’s dusty and passed over. Beer is in the back corner near the wine. Their beer cooler isn’t always plugged in, so if you’re headed to a bbq then this isn’t the place to stop. Also, none of the beers are in six packs (but there are empty six packs for you to fill.)“

“Decent selection, upon seeing what they carry it frustrates me a little to not see very much local (maine) brew. They have growlers and 22s of Bear Brew beer, made just down the street, the standard Shipyard/Gritty/Seadog selections, Peak Organic sometimes. I wanted to see the harder to find locals, Oak Pond and Belfast Bay and whatnot. I occasionally buy beer here but it’s not my first choice.“

“Orono should level the building and make a fresh start. Why is this place still open. While attending UMO I did a study on night life in Orono. If your a girl your drinks will be over poured and as the night goes on over charged. If you are male good luck getting a drink. My advice ask one of the numerous high school girls drinking at this place to get you a beer. Where is the micro beer? Last time I was their they we rude, ran out of most of the liquor the crowd wanted and quite frankly was a joke. I will never waste my time with place again. Former Pub Crawler!“

“May 2007. I wish I could say that my experience echoed the more positive reviews preceding, but alas ’tis not to be. It is a rather nice-looking, unkempt and rustic affair, rambling over 2 or 3 stories of an old hotel, it looks to be. Alas the fun stopped there. I’ll give our waitress some benefit of the doubt: I think she was trying. But I also think she was hired primarily for her looks, not skill, and she wasn’t the only one not on her toes on this visit. My mother and brother both ordered coffee --ok, not a typical order at a brewpub, but it WAS lunchtime, and you’d think they could not bring COLD, I mean frigid coffee out, twice! A couple of small items on our order got messed up....the wait was far too long given the spotty business, and the food was just ok. I got a pizza which while seemingly made from scratch with decent ingredients was amazingly greasy. And the beer. Oh my. Every sample infected, sour, off. We would have been better off with the known mediocrity of Sea Dog than the unknown terrors of the Bear. Avoid!“

“I love Burby and Bates for the selection, wine tastings and service. The selection of beers is always growing. As soon as it becomes available in Maine, it’s available here. There’s a wine tasting about every other Saturday with a good selection of wines from local distributers. As for service, this is a little more hit or miss. If you get the owner or Jeff, they can order anything for you or tell you whatever you need to know about any beer/wine/liquor available.“

“I love Burby and Bates, it’ll always have a place in my heart as "the store" i discovered good beer in. I’ve spent a lot of money here and i’m glad they’ve gotten the stuff they have. They have a rack of Belgians, a rack of English Beer, a lot of the Maine micros, and all sorts of random stuff comes in. Burby’s rules. If you go to UMO this is where you get good beer.“

“WOW. What a selection. I was floored by just which beers I found there. Local Micros like Bear-Brew, Bar Harbor, etc. Lots of hard-to-find Europeans (Germans and Belgians), Asians (They had Lion stout! I was pretty impressed), and they have wines and macros to if that’s your thing. Friendly enough service too. Pleasantly surprised. I’ll be swinging by whenever I’m in Orono.“

“Not a bad place to grab a pint and a meal. My guess is it’s the nicest one in Orono, though I’ve never been to any other brewpubs there. Good friendly service.“

“For a beer bar in a college town, this one is excellent. Friendly service, good food, great beer. They opened a dance club on the second floor, separat from the pub area. The back of the second floor has a deck for outdoor drinking. The third floor has pool tables, tvs and a small bar. As for food, the pizza is good and everything else fairly average.“

“Bear Brew was a 5/5 for Ambiance, but they’ve actually made it worse with the recent addition of the ghetto club upstairs. Thankfully the downstairs bar remains in tact :) Service is always great with generally attractive girls as waitstaff. Selection is good, pretty much typical pub fare. It’s generally tastey but i’ve had a few not so great meals here and there.“
